Indeed ! After all the deaths, atrocities and violence he had seen and quotidiently live with in the trench, where in overnight he had to lose close mates and companions of him so he is sure deeply scarred and traumatized by that sight And it seems like he had enlisted himself to go for WW after becoming widow of his 1st spouse so it's more affligeant 😔
