Chapter 6
Kalpi stares at her mobile phone, debating whether to call ragav or not. The more she ponders on whether to call him, igniting her desire, filling her with hope... that maybe he wants to reconcile... that he no longer wants to end their marriage... that just maybe hate no longer overshadowed love. Thinking back to the night nearly a fortnight before this nightmare began.
Flashback begins
Watching a drunk ragav navigate his way into their bedroom late in the night. The clock on the bedroom wall reads three fifteen. Kalpi sighs quietly, turns away, ready to give in to the sleep she had been fighting as she waited for him.
Ragav walks up to Kalpi, crouching by her side of the bed. Leaning forward he kisses her softly, only deepening the kiss when she kisses him back. Tasting salty tears, ragav stops. Frowning as he watches silent tears fall from his wife's eyes. Baffled, he asks incoherently, "what... why..."
Surprised that he stopped... that he cared enough to speak to her... Kalpi shakes her head and dares ask the question that has been burning inside her, "why do you only make love to me when you are drunk?"
Filled with guilt and uncomfortable with the question, ragav says gruffly, "are you complaining?" Shaking her head, Kalpi locks her hands behind his nape and pulls him towards her, kissing him. Ending the conversation for fear of where their conversation will head... to scared to hear his answers.
Ending their kiss by pulling away, ragav caresses kalpi's cheek as he gazes at her lovingly and with sincerity, whispers, "as twisted as our relationship is... don't I always come home to you." Her heart soars for this was the closest he came to confessing, she pulls him towards her, hugging him tight, whispering, "I love you." Pulling away slightly, staring into eyes shining bright with love for him, he whispers back, "I love you too." Then proceeds to Kiss away all her questions.
Flashback ends
Maya stares at the divorce nisi certificate, disbelief etched on her beautiful features, thinking, "he really went through with it... he divorced her... the doubts I had was just my over active imagination."
Looking up at ragav, her gaze filled with love and happiness she thinks, "thank God I was able to convince him that I did not spike his drink that night. My stupid insecurities would have caused me to lose him forever."
Ragav silently studies the woman in front of him. She looked like crap, her features gaunt, her eyes filled with exhaustion, dark circles forming around her eyes and he couldn't blame her. Sitting opposite ragav, her heart racing, apprehensive as she wonders why he asked to meet. "I need a favour," ragav says. Confused, Kalpi replies, "uh... sure..." "your father has some pictures...," he proceeds to explain. Kalpi give a weak reassuring smile, "don't worry. I will handle it. The pictures wil not come up."
Leaning back on his seat, not surprised that Kalpi would help, ragav asks, "are you not angry with me? I am after your dad and yet I ask you to protect mine."
Smiling sadly, Kalpi replies, "like you once said... our relationship is twisted..." shrugging she adds, "I understand that you need to do this. I also understand that whatever is in those pictures, it would be because of my father. Being married to you, I have had a small gist of what you and your father went through because of my father. I..." she stops mid sentence staring at ragav's puzzled look.
He cuts in, "when did I say our relationship is twisted." Frowning as he recollects the morning he woke up in bed with no recollection of how he got there. "What else did I say that night," ragav asks, his gaze piercing as he tries to fill in the missing memories.
Watching Kalpi close up, ragav thinks with frustration, "damn it. If only I had not mixed my meds with alcohol. I wouldn't have to suffer with these missing memories. What else did I say? I know we had unprotected sex... but what else? Noticing him glare at her midriff, Kalpi says, "I am not pregnant." "Good. I don't think I would've been able to handle having a child that shares your father's genetic make up," ragav snarls, annoyed.
kalpi rapidly blinks away the tears forming, refusing to cry as she recalls his sweet whispers that night...
... ragav stop... protection...
... Kalpi, I want a child... your child...
Shaking away the memories, Kalpi stands up abruptly, saying, "don't worry about your dad and don't hesitate to do whatever you need to do. I just hope that one day when you think of us... (me... she adds silently), it will not be filled with so much hatred" and storms out of the quiet cafe.
Ragav follows after her. Grabbing her hand in the parking lot. Stopping her amist her flight. His voice filled with pain and guilt, he asks, "do you blame me?" A subconscious part needing her to absolve him. Smiling reassuringly, her eyes sad, Kalpi replies, "no I don't blame you." Silently adding, "once you have evened things out... please come back to me."
