Chapter 3
At Samar's Cabin
"This is mine! Leave it!!"
"No, this is mine I claimed it first!" Sammy said, shoving Kalpi aside.
The sweet red liquid was just about to go inside his mouth when Kalpi stomped on his foot. Taking advantage of the the moment, she snatched the glass from his hand.
"Cousin ho toh kya huh?" She said in between sips. "Jeetungi toh mein!" saying this she did her own little victory dance.
"Sam, it's alright!" Raghav said, coming in and taking a seat at the dining table.
"You don't know Raghav, she's been like this since our childhood days. Her eye is always on my stuff," he accused.
Kalpi placed her hands on her hips. "Samar tu.."
Seeing her jungli billi form Samar backed off towards the entry way. "Dekho Kalpi.." he warned. He took another step backwards (which was a big mistake) and crashed into Tani.
"Watch where you are going, fool!" Tani blurted out. It is in her nature to be harsh after all.
Samar bent down and covered his head with his arms as the two ladies went on to hit him.
"Way to go, gang!" Maya exclaimed, as she came to see the commotion.
Finally, Raghav had to pull the ladies away.
"Just shut up!" he yelled, using his angry voice for the first time.
"Can't we all just take a chill pill?"
This didn't go well with Tani apparently, as she isn't used to being ordered around.
"Listen- you," she said sternly. Thus, the ladies changed gear and started beating Raghav up. Sammy just gave his friend an apologetic look.
In the end, the girls left Sammy and Raghav lying side by side on the floor; Raghav with a swollen eye and Sammy with his lip bleeding. "Here bhai.." Samar said grimly, handing him the red cool-aid.
"I don't want it yaar," Raghav said, covering his eye with his hand. "Kalpi drank out of it," he said, as though that made a difference.
Raghav forced a smile despite his paining eye. He downed the cool-aid in one go. "This was the best cool-aid ever," he whispered in a hoarse voice.
Sammy put his head on Raghav's lap and sprawled his legs out on the kitchen floor. He feel asleep almost at once. Raghav stared at him for a moment, but then put his head back on the wall and too dozed off.
Meanwhile, their mischievous had his own ideas. He put on some red lipstick and dressed himself up in a bright colored saree. "Mama..miya!" he said in a high pitched voice.
On the other hand, the girls were all laying side by side outsidei n their sleeping bags.
"Here, Maya let's switch lip glosses," Kalpi whispered over Tani. The girls exchanged quietly over an irritated Tani.
Palak who was reading a book, shined her flashlight over Maya. "Guys," she whispered. "Please be quiet, someone is trying to read, you know."
She shined the light on Kalpi's face. Her lip gloss was drooling down her lip. "Here's a cloth," Palak said giving Maya the handkerchief who then passed it to Kalpi.
"Thanks," Kalpi whispered loudly, after they'd passed the handkerchief back to Palak.
"Kalps, wanna see my new ring?" Maya asked.
"Haan.." Kalpi smiled. First Maya borrowed Palak's flashlight and then passed it and the ring over to Kalpi. Except.. the flashlight fell on Tani.
This was the last straw for Tani. "Am I a counter over which you two are passing stuff?" she yelled.
"Shh.." Kalpi reminded her, as she put a finger to her lips.
"I'm leaving if you guys keep this up!" Tani said, lowering her voice.
"Haan haan sorry!" Kalpi apologized, as she handed the flashlight and ring back to their respective owners.
...
The girls were all drifting off to sleep when a high-pitched voice woke them up.
"Waake upp, girls!!"
"Tut," Paak covered her ears with her hands. "Who's this?!"
"Aaatmaa!!" Prem answered, while managing to control his laughter.
"I told you naa," Kalpi whispered to Tani.
The girls were all standing up by now and started feeling scared. Tani took charge as she snatched Palak's flashlight. "She shined it around the room until it landed on Prem. She screamed and dropped the flashlight.
"Kya hua?" Kalpi asked with wide eyes.
"Bhaagooo!" Tani screamed. "Run for your lives," she said jumping up and down.
The girls all scurried outside and off into the night in different directions.
"Did I scare them too much?" Prem wondered aloud.
Palak ran into a stall with Sam's horse in it. She scrunched up her nose. "Yuck, I smell something."
...
Kalpi ran as fast as she could into the fields.
"Please save me, God," she prayed. She heard a rattling sound, which only added to her fear. "S-s-snake?" she gasped, & covered her face with her hands.
Meanwhile, Maya landed up with the two hens by their coop. "Aaah- aah-aah!"
Maya slipped on 'something' gross and feel face-down to the ground.
Tani ran into the kitchen and leaped right onto the refrigerator.
She covered her eyes, pretending that if she couldn't see anything they wouldn't see her either.
She figured she wasn't alone when she heard snores coming from below.
"Guys.." she whispered. They were sleeping like logs and didn't even stir.
Tani looked around and saw a window cleaning spray on top of the fridge besides her.
She took it and furiously sprayed it towards the dark sleeping figures.
"Baarish.." Raghav exclaimed, a smile set on his face.
Samar too felt it on his lips and jumped up. "Baarish nahi, spray!!" he said in annoyance.
He closed Raghav's mouth shut from keeping spray going into it. (he sometimes slept with his mouth hanging open.
Samar switched the lights on. "Tani you??" surprised to see her settled on top of the fridge.
"you may stop spraying now," Raghav told her sarcastically.
"Voh.." Tani said, embarrassed to be caught in such a state.
"There's a ghost out there!" She pointed as if she could still see it.
Raghav went out to look and came back a few moments later. "Tani, you are mistaken. No one is there, not even the girls."
"The girls!" Sammy said suddenly. "Where are they??"
"Well.." Tani said.
"First get down!" Samar said, lending her a hand.
Raghav watched the duo make a scene out of getting and giving help.
Raghav winked & Sammy got the hint, as he 'slipped' back causing Tani to fall on top of him.
Tani looked straight into his eyes and said, "You are not as innocent as you look."
She got up. "The girls all ran outside.. I don't know where," she told them.
"Let's go find them."
...
"Kalpi.." Raghav called out. "Where are you?"
Kalpi's face brightened. "Raghav," she said, a smile forming on her lips.
Her smile faded as soon as she felt something on her feet.
...
"Hatt! Hatt!" Palak ordered, back in the stall.
"She was struggling with the horse as she tried to put her hoof on her and bring her down.
Hearing the commotion, Tani and Samar hurried over.
Sammy went to the rescue.
"Here Pearly, it's o.k.," he tried, soothing her. He stroked her shiny white mare. "It's all okay.. she's a friend."
Tani was surprised at the care Samar was giving the horse 'Pearly'.
...
"Maya. Maya.." Prem called out. 'Did I scare them too much?' Prem thought.
He heard a noise coming from the coop and raced over.
"Maya?" he grew worried as he saw her on the ground. She slowly lifted her head & the moonlight shone on her face.
"Aaah! Aaahhh..."
Prem and Maya darted opposite ways.
Prem paused to take a breath & recalled Maya's wild hair and dirty face. He shuddered to think about it.
...
Kalpi's smile faded as she felt something on her feet. She closed her eyes ready for it to bite-
Suddenly, Kalpi was swept off her feet & she felt herself twirling in someone's arms.
She opened her eyes and saw Raghav. She blinked. Raghav patted her cheek. "Are you okay?" he said, searching her eyes.
"S-snake," she mumbled stupidly, as she looked at him.
"It's dark out, let's get back. The others must be worried," Raghav said.
He slipped her hand into his.
Somehow, despite the situation, the song 'Mere Haath Mein Tera Haath Ho' made it's way into Kalpi's mind & she was too dazed to move.
Her eyes were glued to his caring eyes.
Raghav just admired her face; as the moon lit her face up.
'Oh fo, Kalpi' she mentally slapped herself. 'Tu bhi na..zara zara baaton par filmy ho jaati ho'.
"Sorry," she murmured. She pulled her hand away. "Let's go."
...
Once they were all gathered around the kitchen table, Kalpi said smugly, "It's been a horrific start to our vacation."
"We should go home tomorrow," Tani added, seizing the opportunity to do so.
"Plus, Prem and Maya are missing," Palak told them.
As if to prove her wrong, Maya suddenly came running in.
"I saw the ghost! she told them. "I saw it by the coop!!"
"Ohmygosh!" Kalpi exlcaimed and everyone burst into laughter, upon seeing Maya's condition.
To add to it all, Prem came bursting in at the exact moment. Tani fell out of her chair (Sammy had to pull her back up).
Maya turned around.
"That's the ghost, that's the ghost!" Maya hollered. "She's it!"
"Guys, I can explain.." Prem said pulling off his blonde wig.
Everyone present gasped.
"You?!" Tani exclaimed.
"yeah.. sorry," Prem said, staring down at his wig.
"I thought it would be fun to scare you girls."
"and you didn't even tell Sam and me," Raghav told his younger brother, enviously.
"yeah.. I was gonna, but these girls ended up running away." Prem laughed.
"You think this is funny?" Maya asked him.
She was looking at herself in the mirror hung to the refrigerator.
"Yeah, I mean no!!"
Maya ran after him, as Prem scurried out.
Everyone left.
Prem toh gaya!
Meanwhile, Kalpi gazed at Raghav and blinked twice.😳
PRECAP: Ladko ki khusiyan pe lagi kisi ki buri nazar. Three charming boys 'NOT' our Raghav, Prem, and Sam make their way up to the ladies.
