For a broad basis, there are two layers to his feelings - one is his selfish obsession for her, which makes him take such angry impulsive steps at her slightest defiance, but at the same time, hidden below is true love, which makes him care, and to an extent regret what he did in anger... But as the obsession dominates, he doesn't act on his remorse...

'Shades' is a word I love to use in explaining this!! 😃 😳
