Chapter 15

Raghav entered the private ward where Kalpana was being kept under observation. His eyes teared up as he stared at his Kalpi laying lifelessly on the bed as various lines passed through drips into a needle in each arm. She looked so peaceful in a deep sleep.

Raghav ran his hand gently over Kalpana's bandaged head.

There was absolute silence in the room besides the occasional beeping of the machine monitoring Kalpana's heart rate. Raghav smiled sadly as he remembered the moments he had shared with Kalpana.

Raghav came back to reality as the ward's door opened and Doctor Singh walked in accompanied by Arjun.

"Doctor, it's been over 24 hours. Why is she still unconscious? Was the operation not hundred percent successful?"- Raghav questioned.

"Calm down Mr. Singhania. I can assure you that the operational was completely successful. But like I told you before, Kalpana has suffered from multiple internal injuries, major contusion to the head and severe blood loss. But she's a fighter. Her vital signs are stable and strong and her brain activity is normal. Just give her some time..."- Doctor Singh replied and gave an encouraging smile to Raghav before flipping through Kalpana's medical chart.

"Alright, I'll come back within a few hours to check up on Kalpana again."- Doctor Singh said before making his exit.

"Kalpu will be absolutely fine Raghav. Whatever that happened wasn't your fault. Don't blame yourself."-Arjun said giving Raghav's shoulder a gentle squeeze.

Raghav simply nodded before turning his attention back to Kalpana.

"Chal, I better call aunty and uncle and update them on Kalpu's progress. They must be worried."- Arjun informed Raghav as he too made his way out of the ward.

Union workers across Pune were on strike due to their unhappiness after the passing of a new wage legislation. Hence the entire city was on shut down making it impossible for Kalpana's parents to make their way from Pune to Mumbai.

And truth be told, ever since that fateful moment, Raghav blamed nobody but himself for Kalpana's condition. If only he had given her an opportunity to explain herself... If only he hadn't walked away... Maybe he could have prevented all this... Just maybe...

"I'm sorry for everything... Please come back to me... I miss you... I love you..."-Raghav whispered holding on to Kalpana's hand and pressing her knuckles against his forehead.

Meanwhile outside the hospital, another scene was unfolding...

"We were so close to accomplishing our goal but this accident ruined it all. Raghav hasn't left Kalpana's side since the accident. If this continues, we might as well forget what we want to achieve!"-Arjun yelled into the phone. He waited patiently as he heard what the person on the other side of the line had to say before continuing," Yes, you're right. We'll have to come with something better and more convincing. Alright then, tomorrow, same time same place."

Arjun ran his hand through his hair in frustration before making his way back into the hospital.

Back in the ward, Raghav was awoken by Doctor Singh who informed him that Inspector Godbole wanted to speak to him regarding the accident. Raghav swiftly made his way to meet the inspector who was waiting outside the ward as visiting hours where over.

"Mr. Singhania, we've managed to catch those responsible for Ms. Jadhav's accident. It was a hit and run case. The culprits have already been changed with rash and drink driving. Do you wish to press any other charges?"- Inspector Godbole asked.

"I want them to rot in jail inspector. And make sure they are not able to get bail."- Raghav said warningly.

"Noted sir. I'll make sure that they will receive the punishment they deserve. I'll take my leave now." "Thank you inspector."- Raghav replied shaking inspector Godbole's hand.

Raghav then went back into Kalpana's room and dozed off while waiting and hoping for Kalpana's to gain consciousness soon.

A couple of hours later, Kalpana struggled to open her eyelids. Her head and chest were aching. It was dark in the room except for the light coming from the hallway. Turning her head, she noticed Raghav asleep, leaning on her bed with his head on his folded arms. She couldn't help but run her fingers through his soft hair.

The sudden movement caused Raghav to jerk awake and raise his head.

"Hi."- Kalpana croaked.

"Kalpi..."- Raghav whispered his voice filled with relief.
