Kalpi groaned again as she exited the elevator. Her head was killing her because of all of the crying from the night before. It was a good thing that she had make-up to cover her puffy eyes, or it would be a disaster coming to office like that and facing all of the queries.
She knew she was early, but she liked that. There was usually no one at the office at that time, and she liked the peace. She was making her way towards her cabin, when she heard soft music from Raghav's cabin. Again, curiosity got her and she went closer to figure out what exactly it was. That was when she had heard - "Say Something, I am giving up on you."
Before she could say anything, he looked up at her and she froze. She hadn't meant to intrude. The more important question was - Did he like this song as well? Was that the reason he looked shocked when she mentioned it before?
------
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
Anywhere I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye
Raghav had decided to come to office early that day, because he still had a lot of work from the day before. However, the silence was deafening as he worked. He was used to Kalpi's incessant chatter regarding the plan, while he worked along. Therefore, he put that song up. No, it was not his 'type' of song, and neither was he curious. He was just looking for some new music, when he had remembered her mentioning it before. That's why he put that song on. It would be close to having her there - purely for strictly professional reasons.
The music was soft, enough to let him do his work with full concentration. He heard heels clicking, and realized that they had abruptly stopped. At first he wanted to dismiss it, but they sounded so familiar that he looked up. Only to find her staring at him, astonished. Crap! That was what came into his head first. He composed himself, and raised his eyebrows at her.
"Did you need something Ms. Jhadav?"
He saw her compose herself, and nodded negatively. After a brief moment, he looked up again to see her standing there. He looked at her, and he caught onto the lyrics. It was amazing how true they were. He wanted so badly for her to wait with him. He wanted her to always sit with him and chat away, even if he seemed like he wasn't listening (though he always was) - just like she hadn't given up on him because of his strange behavior. The reason that they were friends of sort was entirely due to her. Yet, it was all so much to ask. It wasn't about pride anymore. It was about the fact that he didn't want her to get hurt by him. He wanted to take care of her, without being too obvious about it. On the other hand, he didn't want to lose her to someone either.
"I didn't realize that you listen to music?"
Raghav smirked at her, "Ms. Jhadav, there are a lot of things that you don't know about me. This is but one very small thing."
He saw her eyes flicker something. He couldn't put a finger on what it was, because she never showed him that expression before, but it was...unpleasant. She shook her head in dismissal, and went towards her office.
He sighed again. This was harder than he thought. Always acting like her presence didn't affect him, or like the small detail (like her eyes were really red that morning) about her was not noticed by him, was a strenuous chore in itself.
He got up to get some coffee, when he caught sight of her in the cabin next door. He saw her hold her head, and frowning. He looked at the clock to register that there was still 10 minutes left for the office kitchen to open. He cursed himself again for not keeping medicines handy when he needed them. He waited.
"Sir, do you need anything else?"
"Yeah, deliver some coffee and some medicine in Ms. Yadav's cabin. Make sure she eats something before!" He gave quick instruction and dismissed the person. I am sure that girl didn't have breakfast yet.
At noon, Raghav tightened the grip on the glass he was holding. It was so hard to control what he was feeling. He had wanted to yell at Pakiya for sending information for another guy for Kalpi. However, Kamla Ma had told him that Kalpi decided that it was about time for her to get married - she had actually agreed to get married. Was this the guy that Kalpi liked? He clenched his teeth in an attempt to subdue his temper. It was no one's fault, but his own. Of course, Kalpi would get married and eventually be someone's. Just because she had wanted to not marry didn't mean that she was not eventually going to give into her mother's pleas. For that strange moment, he felt sudden unreasonable anger towards Kamla Ma.
He shook his head again, as if trying to break his train of thoughts. He looked up to see her coming in.
"Mr. Singhaniya, Aai wanted me to take you with me to the meeting today. I am sure you know what I am talking about. She said that she told you already about it. Anyways, we will be leaving after 2 p.m."
Before he could even utter a word, she left. He looked down at the glass he was gripping tightly and put it down. He took shaky breaths to calm himself from the overwhelming emotions.
"Agar rokna chahte ho to rok lo usko."
His eyes shot up to see Deepika standing in front of him. He took another breath and pretended to feign indifference, while he busied himself.
"Seriously Raghav, stop acting like a child! If you don't tell her then how would she know? You need to take a risk."
"I seriously don't know what you're talking about. Now, let me get back to my work."
Deepika shook her head in disapproval, "Theek hai. Then, get ready to lose her."
It stabbed Raghav's heart to realize the honesty in that statement. He was about to lose her, to another man that he had never even met. If only he could take her advice. If only he could stop Kalpi from meeting another man. If only he could keep her for himself. No, he wasn't that selfish. He wasn't going to confess to her, when she wasn't even interested in him. That would make things awkward for her, and he didn't want to lose a friend that he had found in her. It wasn't like the typical relationship but she was someone he could trust. He wasn't ready to risk that no matter how much he wanted to.
They were driving in silence, when he abruptly stopped at the stop light. His hand shot up to stabilize her again. For a moment, he stopped breathing at the proximity. He hadn't realized how close he came to her in order to stabilize her. He was shaken out of his thoughts when he heard car honks behind him.
He backed up and resumed driving. After few moments, he cleared his throat again.
"So, what made you decide to give in and get married? Is this the guy that you like?"
When there was no answer, he glanced sideways to catch a frown on her face. When he glanced again, away from the road, that frown had turned into an expression of hurt. Before he could say anything to cover up the situation, he heard her speak.
"No, he is not. The guy I like has other priorities in his life."
There was silence the rest of the way to the restaurant. They reached the restaurant and got their reserved seats. The guy seemed to be running late, so they waited.
Raghav grew more and more anxious as the time flew. Soon, the guy would come here and Raghav would need to be the mediator. He sighed again. The last thing he wanted in his already miserable life was to give away the only thing that made him happy, somehow even in his darkest hour.
"Don't do this. Don't go through with this..." he whispered his thoughts out as he caught her gaze.
For that one moment, he saw something stir in her. For that one moment, her expression completely changed into wonderment. Before anything else could be said, he cleared his throat.
"I mean, I don't get it. If he doesn't make you his priority, then why don't you take the place you deserve? Fight for it! No one comes on the top without something to offer," he didn't know what made him say that to her. He didn't know if whether it was her tired expression or the fact that he really wanted her to cancel the date before the guy came. Either way, Kalpi's reaction was unexpected.
"Mr. Singhaniya, I am tired of fighting. You can't make someone love you and give you their time. Love is one place where I don't want to compete with someone or something, because that would mean that the person already has something or someone he cherishes more than me. Why would I want to take that away from that person?"
"But you took it away from me," he bit out unintentionally.
Kalpi's surprised expression showed that he had actually said that out loud. He wondered what if he left it as he it was? What if he didn't find any more excuses for his statement. He didn't say anything further, just to gauge her reaction.
"What? What did you mean by that?" she said after a long pause, as if making sure that she heard that correctly.
"Nothing. I mean, I don't..."
"No more excuses," she simply said as she studied him. She didn't look completely disgusted as he assumed she would.
"It doesn't matter," he whispered as he looked towards the door, wishing for the first time that the guy showed up already.
"It matters to me," she whispered as she placed a hand on top of his.
She was looking at him with that expression again. It was the same expression that she had looked at him with when she knew that he was struggling internally due to some inner conflict. She was always so open and straightforward. She did not deserve this.
"Stop...stop looking at me like that. Stop being so...nice. I don't deserve it. I make you so miserable. I am always so rude to you. I am always pushing you away. Then, why? Why do you still look at me so fondly?" he said while lowering his gaze under her scrutiny.
She looked away from him. Her hand slowly moved from on top of his. Before he realized, she was standing up and exiting the restaurant.
He got up and raced towards her. After catching up to her, he got a hold of her left hand, to stop her from walking off, and slowly spun her around.
"When I want to get close to you to get to know you, you back off. When I try to keep my distance, you come closer to me. Why do you always find some way? What is it that you want with me, woman?"
Kalpi looked at him, hurt. "I don't want anything. I have never asked for anything from you. I have never even intended it that way."
"I know. That's why. Why would you do that for anyone? Your kindness can give people wrong idea, do you know that?"
"I am not as kind as you think. I am sorry if I.."
Before she could say anything, he pulled her closer and rested his forehead against hers.
"You are so naive. How can I not come closer to you if you are like this? How can I stop myself from falling in love with you, any more than I already am?"
He felt her breath hitch, and, for a second, he froze. It took all of his will power not to run away from there. He held on to her, being fully aware of her movements in case she wanted to pull away. Instead, she took his hands in hers.
"But why would you want to stop that, when I am in the same situation?" she smiled at him. "I have been, for a very long time."
"You've been falling in love with yourself too?" Raghav teased in an attempt to lighten her expression.
She shook lightly as she laughed. She paused a little and then continued, "You've no idea how long I have been waiting.."
Raghav smiled at this. He could not help, but just look into her honest eyes.
"I am so sorry that it took this long. It wasn't easy for me either."
"I know," Kalpi replied as she closed her eyes and relaxed against him.
Raghav, for the first time in a very long time, felt moistness in his eyes. He closed his eyes, as he embraced her. Finally, she was his.

On the other end of the city, Kamla smiled as she got off the phone. Her daughter and Raghav babu had finally found happiness. She had thought that her plan may not work for a second, but it did what it was supposed to do. Now, she would need to come up with a good excuse why the guy, who was meant to show up, never really showed up at the restaurant.
