Raghav's Demons - Character Analysis

Hello Everyone!
So, I was listening to this song called "Demons" by Imagine Dragons and I just noticed that it reminds me so much of the situation RagNa is in. Alright, for those folks who have not heard the song, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWRsgZuwf_8

I know that the 'demons' and the 'beast inside' referred to in the song are anxiety and depression that the writer experienced during his lifetime. The original interpretation is pretty different. However, I am going to interpret it a bit my way (differently) to show what I mean, so please bear with me 😳:

When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood's run stale

I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There's nowhere we can hide

These lines actually relate a lot to Raghav. He is alone. He doesn't have a family or a lot of close friends, mostly because he just doesn't let people near him for the fear of losing or hurting them. I would say that because he had seen so much darkness from his childhood, he thinks that his heart has also turned black and it will hurt other just like the people (with black hearts) hurt him when he was young. The third paragraph is basically telling telling Kalpi (and all of his close loved ones) to stay away from him for her own good. He's telling her that he just wants to 'shelter' her from the darkness inside him, because it will definitely get to her if she's near him.

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

I especially loved these two paragraphs above. The first paragraph basically represents Raghav's view on humanity, due to his past experiences. He thinks that everyone always wants something from him. No matter what they say, they are only near him for this main reason - Greed! He thinks that there's no reason for anyone to be completely loyal when there's a better offer. That's why he actually accused Kalpi of betraying him, without really giving her a change to explain. He was almost expecting her to do that, because he couldn't trust anyone. He is slowly trusting her, and it's scaring him. Therefore, he acts like a 'khadoos' as a filter.

The second paragraph reminds me of the saying 'Eyes are mirror to the soul.' One scene that reminds me of this is where he was super-pissed at Kalpi because he thought she betrayed him. I could feel the pain and hurt radiating from his eyes, even though he was super angry. I don't know if you noticed, Raghav doesn't really make eye-contact with Kalpi for long periods of time (especially if she is standing nearby). Why? Maybe he's afraid that she will see something there that she isn't meant to. He thinks that darkness lies there, and he again doesn't want to let her in too close.

At the curtain's call
It's the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl

So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you've made

Don't wanna let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don't wanna hide the truth

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

Honestly, the first fee paragraphs above sort of represent 'backstage' scenario for Raghav. It reminds me of his facade with other people of being mean and akdhoo. Remember the scene from last week? The one where he talks to his childhood self. In front of Kalpi (in the office), he didn't show even a single bit of guilt. However, when he came home, he drank so much to drown himself in his sorrow until he couldn't feel a thing. It did the opposite for him though. His past 'demons' came out crawling and gnawing at him for being unfair to Kalpi. His whole mask of being heartless fell, and we got to see the vulnerable side of Raghav. The only person that he showed that side to was Kalpi - the one person who he wants to stay away from. He thinks he is staying away from her because of her own good (no matter how much it hurts him in the process). However, he is scared. He wants to stay away from her, because she humanizes him. He doesn't want to be let down again. So, he does what he does best - be a akhdoo khadoos so she stays away.

They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

Alright, I think this sort of represents the current situation in the show. He has already tried his best to stay away from her, and choosing Palki for revenge. However, his fate has been woven with Kalpi. He doesn't know what to do. He is fighting a losing battle, because his fate wants him to face the reality already. He knows that he needs to severe all attachments with her, but it doesn't seem to be possible. Every time he wants to get away from her, something happens.

I think we all know that Kapi has faced a lot in her life. RagNa are similar in a lot of ways. Whereas Raghav's bad experiences led him to being bitter (because there wasn't a Kamla Maa to show him positivity at every second), Kalpi's experience made her stronger and optimistic. She is still very trusting, and hopes that he comes to that as well. I think we can take the literal meaning of 'eyes shining bright' from the last episode where Kalpi looked at him with those puppy eyes so he would go back and help (even though it was naive of her), but it shows that she is very hopeful about people. She likes giving everyone a chance, and benefit of the doubt. He wants to stay away from that hope and light, but he can't.

On the other hand, subconsciously, he wants to escape from the darkness but he doesn't know how to yet. He subconsciously wants her to help him get out of this. His inner innocence and child wants to come out again. However, it will be a gradual process and Kalpi will definitely have a huge part to play in this equation.

---------------

Phew, that was a looonnnggg post but I have been thinking so much about it lately so I thought what the heck? Let's just make a post about it lol. Thank you for bearing with me. Let me know what you guys think! Oh, and for people who haven't heard this song, you should definitely give it a try! It's a good one 😃

Hmmm yes he avoids kalpi...I too have seen this...coz eyes r mirror of our souls and the way daringly Kalpi sees is something which fearxs him that she would see that hope and desire of being cared for... To come out of that darkness...she will see that..even once did he not look towards kalpi while Kalkhi were in cabin and Sammy was noticing this...kalpi was trying to get his attention but he felt like running...

wow dear this is one brilliant post, very well written 👏👏
Thanks for sharing the perceptive post...damn me, I missed reading this... Kalpi is a girl who has the courage to see sunshine even in the darkness and eventually sun arises out; this personality trait of her will help Raghav in battling his inner demons

Loved reading it! Totally true and an apt analysis!
I love this song but now that you point it out it really does suit Raghav so well!
Really, there are demons inside Raghav who fight light out of his life. He does not want anyone to know though!
Extremely well written!👏
