It's completely different from what you've seen
before! An oft-repeated line, be it among film
makers or creatives on television, had become so
cliched that even those saying it had long forgotten
to believe it, leave alone follow it. So, it came as a pleasant surprise when Star Plus'
drama Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Behna Hai actually interlinked a track of a girl (Manvi) suffering from
cancer with a love story (between Manvi and Virat),
yet managed to effectively show the impact of
cancer on people's lives. The show also delved into the side effects of the
treatment for cancer, Chemotherapy and how it can
affect the patient not just physically but also on
how it can slowly break the spirit of the person
suffering from it and how important it is for the
others to support the sufferer. The show also interlinked this painful process with a beautiful love
story that unfolded through every step of the
treatment..the relationship getting stronger at every
step. Virat and Manvi have had their share of fights,
after which they became best of friends,
somewhere along the line, Virat realized that he had fallen for his best friend, so it comes as a shock
to him when he discovers that she is suffering from
cancer. However, that doesn't stop him from loving
her, instead he continues to love and support
through her illness without expecting anything in
return. The first scene that really showed the side-effect of
chemotherapy is when on her Birthday, Virat
comes across Manvi writhing in pain. Her casual
acceptance of the situation is beautifully portrayed
when she replies to his question on where it is
paining with a "ask me where it is not paining". He helps her through the traumatic experience by
easing her pain by rubbing her foot. It's amazing
how Manvi manages to keep her spirit intact as she
jokes with him after her ordeal, besides declaring
him her true partner for being there for her
through good times and bad. This experience also changed Virat's attitude
towards the illness and his love, as he realizes that
at this point, its her recovery that was more
important that him declaring his love to her. It also
helped him grow into a responsible young man.
The next side-effect of chemotherapy that was explored was shortness of breath (almost to the
extent of being unable to breathe) that often
occurs. Manvi and Virat are shown playing video
games – this casual atmosphere suddenly turns
serious when Manvi develops serious breathing
problems, the scene captures how Virat takes care of her by calling up the doctor and massages her
back to elevate her pain. In this beautifully written
scene, Manvi again manages to joke, however she
is in no mood to wish for anything when he offers
her a wish hair that he finds, instead he wishes for
her recovery. This scene also beautifully captured how their lives were now interdependent and one
could simply not live without the other.
The third sequence, was not a side effect, instead,
the show went into realms till then untouched by
the serial world, when it accurately showed a
lumbar puncture sequence – this is basically a painful process where the patient's spine is tapped
for a fluid that is used for diagnostic purposes.
While Manvi goes through the process, her sister
Jeevika who is more of a parent to her is unable to
see her in pain has to be led out. Virat steps in at
the right moment to hold her hands through the procedure thus providing her with some relief. The
scene though not romantic in nature, captured the
true love that Virat held for Manvi (especially since
they had had a fight over an unexpected streak of
jealousy in Manvi).
The next scene that was truly commendable was right after the lumbar puncture sequence when
Manvi comes across a young child who was bald as
an after effect of chemotherapy. For the first time
since she was diagnised with cancer, Manvi was
shown completely shattered as a young girl coming
to terms with the tragic consequences of the disease she had, for tragic it is for a young girl to
lose her hair. In a poignant sequence, Virat is
shown telling her that it's not her outward
appearance that mattered, the most important truth
was that she was beautiful inside, so she would
always remain beautiful. He also declares that she is his partner for life. The words touch her so much
that she embraces him. The hug that turns
passionate, also sparks an unexpected realization
of feelings in her. This is also the beginning of
Manvi's realization of her love.
There is also a simple sequence where Manvi (who has now realised her love for Virat) refuses to let
Virat know about her chemotherapy session, so
that he can complete the recording of a song that
will restart his career. In an aesthetically picturised
song sequence, Manvi undergoing chemotherapy
is shown imagining Virat singing for her, while Virat singing in the studio is shown imagining
Manvi being there for him. The scene very
effectively conveys the meaning Virat and Manvi
hold for each other, he is her strength, while she is
his inspiration.
The final sequence is the one where Manvi shaves off her hair after losing chunks of hair post a
chemotherapy session. Now completely shattered,
Manvi is unwilling to show herself to the world,
Jeevika her sister is the only one she clings to, for
support. Virat who finds it unbearable to see his
love and the free-spirited girl that Manvi is, in such distress, forcibly enters the room and tries to tell her
that she is the most beautiful girl in the world for
him. Though he makes her smile for a while, she
goes back into depression. He takes the most
dramatic step a lover can take in the circumstances
by shaving his hair off, right in front of her. Thus declaring them together through that difficult
phase as well. Virat's love for Manvi and his sacrifice
was also the tag line of their love story, there are
limits to life, not love! For the first time on television,
two of the lead characters were shown without hair
and this in itself created history of sorts. The Virat-Manvi story continues, but these
sequences stood out because of their freshness not
just in treatment, but also in content. These scenes
remain imprinted in the minds of viewers in spite of
months passing by. They were well written,
directed and enacted, besides they gave equal importance to Cancer as well as to the love story
associated with it.
