Khushi, says, "Just like we care for our clothes and other accessories, our jewellery also needs to be cleaned from time to time to maintain its spark. Dust often collects on our accessories, especially when we keep wearing them round-the-clock. To clean gemstones, you can immerse them in water with few drops of mild soap. You can also use a soft toothbrush to clean the dust behind the stones. After that blot it dry with a soft cloth".
"It's a tradition in our family to wear gold jewellery everyday but maintaining them is a challenge", says Akshara. " You can go for the ammonia method of cleaning but before you use it just make sure that you don't use it too often as it might darken the ornament. In this, mix one part of ammonia to six parts of water. Then soak the piece of jewellery for a minute. Rinse it under running water and dry it with a soft cloth".
Sandhya says, "If you are washing your fashion/custom jewelry with gemstones that are glued into the setting then it should not be submerged in water. You can wipe the jewelry with a cloth that's been dabbed in a dish soap solution. Pat dry with a soft cloth later."
Sushila uses the simplest method for cleaning her ornaments. She says, "Ornaments like bangles or earrings that you wear daily can be cleaned with toothpaste. After rubbing toothpaste on them, rinse with cold water, sure to leave your jewellery sparkling clean. "
Jeevika says, "While cooking sometimes you end up staining your jewellery with oil. So if you want to get rid of that oil, grease or wax off then you can submerge your the ornament in hot water. The residue will float on top and the ornament will come out clean."
Some other quick tips to protect your jewellery are:
Take off your ornaments for the night while sleeping. Rub it with a soft cloth daily to prevent dirt depositing over them
Store your jewellery in a soft cloth, paper or jewelry pouches/boxes that have separate sections.
Keep your diamond pieces stored separately as they tend to get scratches easily.
Always put your jewellery after you are done applying your makeup, perfume or sprays. The chemicals in these products may have a damaging effect on your ornaments.
Once a year always try to clean your jewelry professionally. The jeweler will check for all possible defects and fix them.
