Why Nithya matters to Dev so much

Yesterday's epi in which Dev shouts his frustrations at Durga made me understand why Nithya means so much to Dev.
I guess Dev was a person used from childhood. He was supposed to live for others. His mother bought him up like that. His desires, his likes, his dislikes where secondary. He was for fulfilling his father's dream.
Since his father was not there his uncle and aunt supported his mother and him. So he was supposed to be grateful to them. He was supposed to forgive him, allow Shaurya to have his way.
If Shaurya made any mistake he should cover it up. Because the prestige of the family rested in his actions. it didn't matter what Shaurya did. Shaurya can do anything.
But Dev doing anything that is not correct obviously family name was used to shut him up. Dev is attached to his mother, respects her and Suchitra also has used this respect to ensure he never crosses any boundary.
In a nutshell from childhood his inner turmoils, inner conflicts remained with him only. No one valued him, just used him the way they wanted.
Maybe Nithya would have been that one person who might have valued him with all his limitations. When she says I have blind trust on you it means she truly values his friendship and his presence in her life.
Now the guilt of not being there for her in her hour of need, the unconfessed love and her loss is all building into him. He is slowly waking upto the fact that it all has happened because he was living for someone else, he was doing things because someone else wanted him to do things and since he couldn't disappoint them especially his mom he has lost something really precious for him. Yesterday also Suchitra asked him to take KC things for Durga. Durga told she wanted to do KC because she respects Suchitra. No one thought what he wants. Is he comfortable doing KC ritual with a woman he doesn't love. For Suchitra because Durga agreed he has to oblige, for Durga because Suchitra wants it she will keep it. No wonder he lost his cool.
Dev is actually quite a nice guy with lot of limitations and emotional baggage of standing upto his family's name , his father's dream and his mother's expectation even if that contradicts with what he actually wants to do. If a woman is able to accept him with his limitations actually he can be transformed. Because he has the talent, he is compassionate, has right set of values and if someone is able to give him respect and love this guy will be loyal to that person through out his life.
Nithya had given him respect, value and love in a platonic way. He lost her because of his own emotional conflict. And that is weighing him down badly.
Durga can witness more of that. Exactly the way she wanted. Whenever her enemies were destroyed she had gone to see how it looks. Shouldn't she be witness to Dev's self destruction mode also which she had asked the Goddess by taking out the daaga. No wonder she is placed in that room with him. It is exactly to see how it feels when the punishment she decided for him actually plays out in front of her.

well said. I agree with most of things you say about Dev.
I've said this before - it is not easy for him.

To me Dev was born and brought up in a secure family. He did lose his father at a young age but they were financially stable and also his uncle and aunt never treated them as strangers. So all was well in his house. He didn't have to bother about anything. So, he completed his degree in India and went straight to US.
He made no contact with Nitya. I understand his account was hacked but did he hiimself make a try ever? But then he expects that Nitya must be waiting for him.

He doesn't understand what poverty is. He doesn't understand that somethings in life cannot be achieved because he was brought up like that only. He is a Goenka after all.

Therefore to him Nitya also loves him because he loves her this much. He also didn't bother how practical this relation was. He just went with the tide. His delusional thinking is so far stretched that without any logical reasoning or findings he is sure Nitya must be alive. All the time he could not decide whom to believe- the Mitras or the Goenkas. As if he wanted to believe that there was no rape at all or at least Shaurya was not the rapist.

HIs way of investigation was based on the belief that Nitya is alive and she has to be found. He was not really sure if he wanted to know what happened two years ago. He hardly has any plan for future. So, he has no plan to get justice for Payal. Payal should be normal now so that she can help him with Nitya's whereabouts.

He is frustrated because its the first time he is losing. No one asked him to marry Durga. His mother who is asking for a vrat now was supporting him all the while. It was him who made a wrong decision. His thinking process doesn't run far because he never used his brain. His question should be why is Durga helping the Mitra sisters ? But no he is annoyed with the Thakurs that they wont let him meet Nitya. He is not questioning if Nitya wants to meet him. Also, he thinks he will find Nitya and everything else will fall in its place on his own.

Overall, Dev has no idea about the hard realities of life. He has no idea about his own family. He has no idea how things work in the real world. Thak gaya hun dusre ke bare me sochte sochte. What did he do for others btw ? He is not frustrated because he has done too much for others. He is actually frustrated because all his life he got what he wanted and this time he asked for Nitya and he didn't get it. So, he is cursing everyone.

Two important this man needs to learn is:

1. TIme waits for none. 2 years is a long time.

2. Only love is not enough .

Shruthi I wish I was able to understand DEV like this but honestly I feel he is a LIL stuck up in life ..

See while he was away Payal n Nitya suffered n he feels bad abt it is ok ..but guilty ???why so ???wasnt he supposed to live his life n go ..or was it like tht he WAS supposed to be the bodyguard of Nitya n Payal ???..this is one big flaw ..

Second I agree he has been forced to marry Durga but heck ..she is also adjusting in HIS house with his cynical family ...shud not he be a bit more adjusting ???and for whom is Durga observing the fast ??for HIS mom ..so well there u go ...he is flawed AGN

Actually his way of thinking n thought process puts me off

Dev is selfish. He is just using Payal to get to Nitya and nothing else.

Others NOW have way more trouble to deal with than understand Mr Dev. The limitations he had were not greater than those on Nitya. Did he try to ever contact Nitya through other ways? Was he so bullied that his account was hacked and he had no idea? He had mostly been left to do his own thing, this is why he kept bonding with Mitra girls. So couldn't he find his own ways to keep in touch?
Why did he cover up Shaurya's mistakes and never share them with Mitra girls to warn them knowing that they frequented the Goenka house often?

There was no pressure on him to marry Durga. Rajnath and Suchitra were not convinced and most were shocked by Sakshi. He allowed himself to be bullied by Dayal with the Nitya lure.

Did he ever use his brain to notice how he was bullied? Till last month he was all heeheehaahaa with his family. Only felt stifled now?

He could have countered Dayal by threatening to complain to police on illegal confinement of Nitya. But no. He easily believed he could get Nitya if he obeyed him.

Dev always had resources, time alone, non interference and money. Never as pitiable so to be the way he is.

Nitya also seems to be bossy in flashbacks. She didn't give him any greater love than his mother.

Dev is basically a failure who neither lived up to dreams of his parents, nor was there for his friend.

Who was stopping him from confessing love to Nitya, rebelling, finding more ways to contact her?

The only ones who suffered destruction in true sense in this show were Mitras - Payal and Nitya included.

Mere frustration of Dev is nothing.

He greeted family happily on return and had no problem with them till last month. This means he didn't even have idea of their manipulation and bullying him!

He was 50% shareholder. Did he ever try to assert himself as his mother's only son and owner of half the Goenka empire? Even mild assertion to get his own way?

A man is never this helpless. Rather he should have been shield of his mother too who was being bullied by other Goenkas. But he was not.

How does he assume Nitya must be alive? How does he assume she too would reciprocate his love? How much he has thought that he is tired of thinking?

He was wondering why Payal changed statement, did he even consider once that big fish must have bullied small fish? Even ordinary people know possibility o witness intimidation!

Has he wondered why Payal's parents died?

Has he ever even asked the right questions?

The "oh he was an orphan" trope doesn't buy sympathy for Dev nor absolve him of his non action, mistakes and oversight.

nice analysis on dev but i don't know i never liked his character and his antics much.
when he came back from states he could have done a lot to help nitya and payal but at the same time in a intelligent and careful manner. I know searching them was important but didn't he knew it would be difficult as he himself lost contact with them years ago. He should have understood from the reaction at his home while talking about the rape case that it's something no one likes to discuss so instead of investigating about it secretly he did it in open.

Not only did his slip up's put payal at risk but it seems makers didn't have any idea as to how his character would shape in the show so they made him the dumbo dev. it's a pity that the hero of the show is actually disliked by many ppl for his half baked character sketch and inability to do anything to bring payal's tormentors to justice.

loved ur post for the way it is being written but don't agree with it.

I agree with Debs. Dev is simply frustrated over not getting what he wants the way he wants. He never thought things could change in 2 years. Neither considered circumstances or their effect.
He lived in dream world. Forever delusional.

I have always wondered how Dev is the perfect match for a girl like Nitya. Nitya without Dayal's name and fame or his help was far more strong willed than Dev is. He may be a good man but he is a weak soul. Nitya, a driver's daughter was so thoughtful about buying a house for her baba. She was already working. All Dev knew was writing love songs. Then he went to US for further studies and now he is selling his shares to find Nitya. Sometime back some one had commented how Nitya is wasting Dayal's money. I have myself commented how Sakshi's power rest on Rajnath's money but for Dev we are so much okay when he uses his father's money to get his girlfriiend ?

He was confused why Payal changed her statement. He was confused why Nitya was missing. He was also confused who manipulated the medical file. He was also confused why he or Payal was attacked.

I never understood what was his confusion? There were two parties in the rape case. The Mitras who claimed to be the victims and the Goenkas who were supposedly the accused. Isn't it obvious either of them must be lying?

Now if Mitras had lied in the court and later accepted it why was Nitya missing or why was Payal in the mental hospital with deliberate wrong medical treatment ?Even better who attacked Payal and only Payal and no one else in the farm house?WHo had so much power and money to attack him and his frriend for they tried digging the truth ? Why were the Bagchis missing who went against the Goenkas in the court ?

Not everything comes from the family. Common sense is something you must have it on your own. There is something called maturity and if Dev is not mature enough why should he marry Nitya or take over Payal's rresponsibility ?

Why this society is so man centric ? Man are treated like new born babies. Even Nitya said that Dev will be hurt if he comes to know that he was responsible for the attack on Payal. No wonder one politician justified rape as 'ladko se galti ho jati hai' while another said,' Woman should not try to be adventurous'.

I like the arguments put forth by both Deb and Shruthi. Both shed light on the situation and though I cannot completely agree to both, some parts of it certainly made perfect sense to me.

Dev is frustrated, all right? Agreed, it is never easy to be the scion of a powerful family like Goenkas as u will always be weighed down with responsibilities and being the son of the eldest son of the family who would have been the head had he been alive, expectations on him doubled up. Its easier to say one must keep their head on and focus but its easier said than done. A common man always dreams of leading a luxurious life wielding influence on others but vice versa, a rich guy will probably dream of enjoying the small happiness in life which the common man enjoys and that is what Dev sought out too.

I understand why he is being so bitter but he has assumed right away that he will leave behind everything once he finds Nithya 😕 But did he bother to find out if Nithya wants the same? She could have loved somebody else in his absence. Without considering this possibility he is blaming everyone for separating him from Nithya but was Nithya his true love? At this point, its just unrequited love. Dayal did not keep him at gun point before asking him to marry Durga. He agreed to marry her to find Nithya but did he for once realise the sanctity of marriage? Agreed Dayal said Durga is getting married for a purpose but for an ideal person like Dev is this what marriage is all about? Dayal threatened him on the pretext of his daughter's honor but was he so crazy about finding Nithya that he blindly agreed to it without realising the consequences of marriage? And now he did why isn't he honoring it? Durga knows the marriage is fake but for the world and Dev the marriage happened for real. I am not saying he should accept Durga as wife but its time he acknowledged it atleast rather than rant on about Nithya. Say Nithya was a different person. Will he just dump Durga after he finds Nithya? 😕 Would his friend approve of it ever?

I will never accuse Dev of covering up for Shaurya. Keep yourself in his place. Is it easy to accept an accusation like that on a family member blindly? The accusation is big and he needs proof too. He knows Payal and Nithya will never do any such thing but does that mean he will straight away accuse Shaurya of being a rapist? He knew Shaurya is a spoilt brat but rape is too big an accusation. Its not wrong on Dev's part to want to first hear out what happened in reality before deciding. I know there were other ways of getting in touch and for this I do blame Dev. His mail account was hacked and maybe mail isn the best way to communicate over such matters. His visa was not processed. So what? He could have called Nithya. She was just a call away. Maybe he didn know the complete story but when he knew that a misfortune had fallen on the Mitras he could have done his best to contact them. Not like Suchitra was tailing him 24x7. And Suchitra wouldn't have tried to stop him for she wanted to know the truth herself. She still doesn't believe that the Mitra sisters were capable of what they were being accused of. Its all so complicated 😕

Certain things for which Dev is being blamed for I cannot agree but at the same time neither can I accept that he was helpless enough to not act.
