Posting a few blogs and reviews on Simone Singh as Sakshi Goenka in Ek Hasina Thi:

Unable to Suspend Disbelief for Ek Hasina Thi'...

I know that as an avid movie and serial viewer, I am supposed to suspend my disbelief a little bit in order to truly enjoy what the writer of the show has to offer us. Which is why, I try as much as I can, not to question some of the oft-repeated themes prevalent in many of our Indian shows-The 20 year time leap after which former 70 and 80 year olds are still alive and healthy, the life changing plastic surgery which alters not only the actor's features, but also his height, body type, and voice. I really try, though it irks me a little bit. But to expect me to believe that a man survives, after getting shot twice (or was it thrice? I remember there being a "bonus shot") by an experienced sharp shooter and being left to die, for god knows how long before being found by Durga, is a little too much and I don't know if I will be able to suspend my disbelief any longer.
Ek Haseena thi, which is the story of a girl out to seek revenge on the son of one of the most affluent families in Kolkata for the rape of her sister, is the Indian "version" of the ABC show Revenge. I was not expecting much from this show, to be honest. I usually find such blatant plagiarism of western shows intolerable but then I was pleasantly surprised. One of the finer aspects of this show. which got my attention is its excellent star cast. We have the gorgeous Sanjeeda Sheikh as the avenging heroine Durga (analogous to Emily Vancamp's role in Revenge) and the all grown up, boy-next-door Vatsal seth as Shaurya Goenka (Daniel Grayson). Ayub Khan is excellent as the filthy rich philanderer with enough money to buy his son's way out of trouble, Rajnath Goenka (Conrad Grayson) and Simone Singh is perfect and stunning in the role of Mrs Sakshi Goenka. So perfect, infact, that I almost forget that her character is based on Madeleine Stowe's character of Victoria Grayson in Revenge. It's as if the role was tailor-copied with Simone singh in mind, because she is excellent. The perfect ice queen, who handles her son's indiscretions and her husband's suspected philandering with elegance and "Old-Money" class. She is cultured, soft-spoken, and is always impeccably draped in designer sarees and pearls, but her soft, genteel appearance belies a backbone of steel. She owns the show, in my opinion. Sanjeeda Sheikh is apt in the complex, multi-layered role of Durga Thakur. She has supposedly undergone plastic surgery in order to enable her revenge on Shaurya Goenka (Big surprise there), Her plan is to entrap him in her web of deceit and finally expose him for the rapist that he is. She is a great actress, but I sometimes get the feeling that she tries to emulate Simone Singh's distinct speaking pattern, which is why she sounds stilted in her dialogue delivery at times, but that could also be because I am biased in my fascination with Sakshi Goenka. Vatsal Seth is gorgeous as Shaurya, no doubt about it. With those piercing green eyes and that boyish smile, he makes the perfect bad boy and womanizer. He has come a long way from his role of the day- dreaming teenager Jai, in Just Mohabbat'. But I feel that he would be a better actor if he didn't try so hard. He seems a little contrived and exaggerated in his dialogue delivery at times, but then again, maybe his role requires him to be a little theatrical?
So coming to the present, Shaurya has hired a sharp shooter, Elena to assassinate his "Bade Bhaiya" Dev, who he sees as a hindrance to his courtship of Durga, with whom he is deeply in lust. I am not going to dignify Elena's introduction with a description, except to say that she fell flat for me. I was expecting the sharp shooter to be a look-alike of Nitya or Durga or atleast someone memorable, which was why Shaurya was making such a big deal of her. Instead, the writer wasted too much screen space on an actress, who could at best be described as mediocre, and whose total appearance on the show lasted maybe 15 minutes
Anyway, Dev is shot thrice and Shaurya is so thrilled to finally get him out of the way, that he takes a selfie with a dying Dev. I have a feeling, that morbidly stupid move is going to come back to bite him in the behind. Also, while he was there, could he not have tried to check Dev's pulse to make sure that he was indeed dead? Anyway, he returns home, to the relief of his parents and seems uncharacteristically happy for someone whose life was supposed to be in danger. That is, till they receive a call from Durga saying that Dev has been shot but is still alive, though in a critical state.
That is when things start falling apart for Shaurya and he goes to pathetic lengths to avert suspicion from himself-from loudly declaring that he will make sure he catches the person responsible for this, to kneeling in front of Ma Durga, and beseeching that she save his brother. His mother of course knows her son and what he is capable of well enough, to immediately suspect him and she hopes desperately that she is overthinking it and that her son is not involved in this mess. Dream on, Mrs Goenka. Durga does not know what to think, but is taken aback by his sudden love for his brother and his new found faith in God.
So will Dev survive this mess? I don't know, but after three shots from an experienced sharp shooter at a fairly close range, I assumed that he would be a goner. I have seen characters in other shows not survive, from much less. But, oh well...Please note, that I do want Dev to be saved, He is the best thing going on in Durga's life besides her father, the dashing Dr Dayal. His survival is just a little, well unrealistic considering how he was ravaged by those bullets and left to die. But again, in a world of 20 year leaps after which great-grandparents are still alive and body and voice altering facial surgeries, nothing is impossible...

Another blog review raving about Simone as Sakshi Goenka:

Saxxxy Goenka!

As I wait with bated breath for the second installment of our desi 24 to be announced, Star Plus' Ek Hasina Thi seems to be doing a pretty fine job of filling the void. With a plot as ripe with promise, I hope its makers won't ever lose the plot

What stinks is the cinematography. Perhaps as much as the Hooghly! We get it that the series is based in Kolkata. There's no need to give us a G.K. lesson by flashing the Howrah Bridge in practically every frame! We also get it that major inspiration has been derived from the woman-centric Kahaani', incidentally also filmed in the City of Joy. But it really kills my joy that the protagonist is named Durga and that her face is constantly juxtaposed against a mammoth figure of the Goddess.

Although the casting isn't exactly rave-worthy, someone whose acting chops I really admire is Saakshi Goenka. I particularly liked the episode where she disgraced Mathur in a public forum with her dignity kept intact. With her smooth and sophisticated drawl to boot, it won't be long before she's rechristened Saxxxy Goenka!

Wot say guys? Do you agree with me that she takes the show to an altogether new level? Would love to hear your take.

Yet another blog review on Simone as Sakshi Goenka as well as her look in Ek Hasina Thi:

Sakshi Goenka Look: Ek Hasina Thi

The only Hindi daily soap that I follow is Ek Hasina Thi. The storyline is different and very interesting, all the actors in the serial are perfect for their parts. The entire set up of the plot seems to be well planned in advance and fantastically executed. The performance of all the actors in the serial is excellent. Also it seems as if a lot of thinking has gone into the outward appearance of the actors. The makeup, clothes and background music create an aura of 'perfect' drama.
If you too follow the daily soap you will agree that there is one person who overshadows everyone else with her grace, posture, beauty and phenomenal acting- Sakshi Goenka. This role is played by the famous television actor, Simone Singh, also famous for her debut in the serial Heena. Why am I so excited? Simply because she comes from my hometown, Jamshedpur!

Sakshi's side swept curls, lace blouse with chiffon saree and pearl jewellery make her look so vintage. She carries the look perfectly with immense grace..I mean just look at her posture!

Hairstyle- Whether it is a bun, curls or even straight hair..Simone carries every thing with grace!

Jewellery- Be it modern, traditional, or no jewellery at all Simone again looks gorgeous.

Saree & Makeup- This is my favourite part. She is mostly seen carrying chiffon sarees in pastel colors with a sexy lace blouse. What I love about her looks is that she sometimes likes to challenge old rules. She looks so classy with light colored sarees with minimal jewellery and light makeup.Who says you cant sport a bright saree with a bright lipstick? Look how beautifully the red saree is paired with red lips.Again, Sakshi's look with Dark Smokey eyes and a hint of bronze, paired with heavy jewellery is truly classic!

The real star of Ek Hasina Thi - Sakshi Goenka!

She might be playing a dark character but it is Simone Singh as Sakshi Goenka who has truly been the STAR ATTRACTION of Ek Hasina Thi, Tv show on Star Plus. The way she carries herself, the way she speaks, her dialogues, one liners, expressions, her grace, her style, her impeccable and ageless beauty, her sheer command over language make her completely stand apart from other routine crop of actors both in Ek Hasina Thi as well as Indian television in general.

Simone as Sakshi Goenka simply overpowers every other actor, including the said heroine Sanjeeda Sheikh, and emerges the true trump card of the show. No wonder whenever you Google Ek Hasina Thi it is her pic that comes up first!

Sakshi Goenka is the classiest antagonist in history of Indian TV and films. No over the top shouting or contorted expressions. No cheesy lines. Infact her eyes are enough to convey what she is feeling.

The other actors simply fail in language department. Especially Sanjeeda and Ayub Khan whose English is not upto the mark. Simone on other hand, has perfect command over Hindi and English with her clear diction and correct pronunciation. She is also the only actress in the show who routinely used Bengali words and spoke Bengali perfectly unlike others.

Sakshi Goenka is a cult character and Simone Singh has given her all to this role. Her jewellery and outfits are extremely popular and sell like hot cakes on EBay, Snapdeal and other e-commerce portals. Infact Google has suggested keywords like "Sakshi Goenka dresses", "Sakshi Goenka sarees", "Sakshi Goenka necklace", "Sakshi Goenka jewellery" in their searches which shows the sheer popularity of her character!

Sakshi might be on the wrong side but fact is she is much more intelligent, perceptive, quick thinking and action oriented than Durga who basically is nothing but someone who copies Sakshi's own plans and tries to use them against her and her family. Her observation and instincts are bang on and she is completely fearless. It is her attitude that makes her more powerful than just her surname alone.

It is only Simone Singh as Sakshi Goenka who unanimously got great reviews and thumbs up from all critics for Ek Hasina Thi and also won most awards for the show as an actor. She has been topping all lists of best actresses this year. Infact on sites like India Forums it is she who has active appreciation thread dedicated to her and not any other leads.

She even won polls on Facebook as the most favourite and best character of Ek Hasina Thi. That speaks volumes about her impact.

The writer gave her a raw deal towards the end though but Simone being the consummate actress that she is, continued to lift the show on her shoulders with her powerpacked performances even as other actors looked wooden and sleepwalked through their roles.

It is not easy to play a villainous role. It is the dream of every actor to play a villain once and prove his or her versatility. Simone took up this challenge and emerged victorious.

After attaining popularity as Heena in 90s, she added another iconic role to her repertoire with Sakshi Goenka in Ek Hasina Thi.

It is rare for an actor to get two iconic roles in one lifetime on TV. Rare to be a part of so many iconic shows spread over decades like Seahawks, A Mouthful of Sky, Swabhimaan, Heena and now Ek Hasina Thi.

Simone Singh is truly a legend of Indian Television. The real HASINA of Ek Hasina Thi!

Hope to see her back onscreen soon in even better roles!

Though Ek Hasina Thi is no great shakes as a show, it was made special only and only due to Simone Singh as unique Sakshi Goenka! Viewers still call it "Mrs Goenka wala serial!"

That's the magic of Simone Singh - the real star and USP of Ek Hasina Thi!

i agree with the article..she was the only one who used bengali words and tht too with perfect diction..except for sanjeeda saying "aami jaani na" ONCE in the show, nobody else has even bothered to speak a few words of the language of the city the show is based on..she is and will always be the USP of the show..

Hi all!😊
My final summation on character of Sakshi Goenka and what shaped her, read and respond if you wish - https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/ek-haseena-thi/4257674/an-analysis-on-twisted-life-of-sakshi-goenka-writer-shared-it-on-fb

A woman who saw the cruelest side of the world and became cruel herself in her chasing a mirage of power and "family name".
