Der Schnste Moment
Part 1
"Haan Sharma Ji...aaj he saare cases wrap up karne hai...haan." Shravan instructed his PA over the phone while combining his hair standing in front of the mirror.
"Nahi, aap please Mr. Dixit ko keh dijiyega ki mai unka case nahi lad paaunga. Aur agar phir bhi woh insist kare toh unhe Malhotra and Associates ke paas apna case lejaane ko kahiyega..."
Just then Shravan saw Suman walking in the closet. He smiled faintly at her through the mirror. She wordlessly stood besides him, took his wrist in her petite hands and started buttoning his cuffs.
"Haan Sharma Ji, aap unhe inform kar dijiyega ki mai das din ki chutti pe hun. Aur dhyan rahe mujhe kisi bhi tarah ka disturbance nahi chahiye...ji"
Shravan smiled down at his wife, shifting the phone to his other hand while she finished with both of his shirt cuffs.
"Thik hai fir...baaki baaate hum office me sort out karlenge...aap bus court pahunchiye me aa raha hun."
Shravan ended his call while Suman brought his black tie. He bowed his head down so she could wrap the tie around his neck. He then helped her to stand on the small stool so she was at eye level with him. He put his hands on her sides, holding her securely. They had gotten the stool shortly after they got married at the insistence of his wife so she could help him whenever he needed it without straining her neck painfully.
But right now something was wrong. He could sense it steaming from his wife's silence. It rarely happened that his Sumo would be quiet and not chattering nonstop. He guessed she was still upset with him.
"Sumo..."
Shravan called out to his wife softly. She didn't look up at him and continued knotting his tie.
"Sumo abhi naaraz ho mujse? Kuch toh bolo..."
Suman then looked up at him with her big chocolate brown eyes, her red piggy nose and her pink lips pulled down with a pout. She looked at him with her best impression of puppy dog eyes and Shravan found it increasingly difficult to resist and give in to her wish.
"Don't go Shravan..."
"Darling please! Aisi haalat me upset hona tumhaare aur baby ke liye accha nahi hai..."
"Meri aisi haalat tumhaari vajh se hue hai and thus you ought to be with your wife right now..."
"Suman...I'm taking a ten days long leave just so that I can be with you when our baby arrives. Today is the last day and I am wrapping up everything at work just for this..."
As calmly as he could, Shravan tried to explain to his stubborn and moody wife. She had been acting extra moody and clingy since the last two days which Shravan attributed to the volatile hormones of his pregnant wife.
Pregnant.
Yes. His wife was expecting and they were soon going to be parents. He was going to be a father. To say that he was excited would be the understatement of the millennium!
He was ecstatic and nervous and scared.
At times he felt confident about this new phase of their lives and often assured his wife that they would be fine. They would get by, together. But at other times this very news would be enough to scare the shit out of him and in no time he would be feeling all over the place! But then Suman would be calming him down and assuring that they would be fine.
After all being parents wasn't easy. Nah-uh.
Infact it was the toughest job in the world. A life depends on you, it needs to be nurtured in the most delicate manner and with as much love and warmth as you can give it. And thus they had waited for a while after their impromptu marriage and long overdue confession. They first wished to resolve all the issues that they had and build an understanding of sorts between themselves before bringing a little third unit in their 'gang'.
And now after two years of their marriage, his wife was pregnant and they were about to welcome their first born in a matter of a week. Suman's doctor had given them the expected delivery date which was exactly seven days later.
Shravan wanted to be with his wife when she finally gives birth to their child and for that he had cleared his schedule for the next ten days. His staff was given strict instructions to not to disturb him during these ten days. He just wanted to be with his new family without any distractions.
His family.
He smiled faintly at his wife who was behaving like a child and not like a soon-to-be-mother!
Shravan gently caressed his wife's huge belly, rubbing soothing circles on her sides to assure her and calm her down. Suman sighed and rested her head on his shoulder clutching the front of his white shirt.
"Today will be my last day at work and after that I will be with you 24/7 to the point where you'll be sick of me and you will just kick me away from yourself!"
Shravan murmured lovingly, kissing his wife's temple. At this Suman chuckled and looked at him, a soft smile on her lips. Finally!
"Buddhu! Me kabhi tumhe nahi chhod ne waali. Saat janmo tak tumhaare gale pad chuki hun, ab bhugtoo!"
"Ab ye hui naa meri Sumo wrestler waali baat! Aur waise bhi tumhe mere alaava aur koi nahi jhel sakta..."
Shravan said dramatically while Suman just whacked him and giggled.
"Oww Sumo! Ab toh mujhe maarna band karo...me baap banne walla hun! Meri beti dekhegi toh woh mujhe apna hero kaise kahegi?"
"Beti?! Tumhe kisne kaha beti honewali hai?"
"Kisine nahi...mujhe bas pata hai."
Shravan could see that Suman was highly amused now and looked like she had come out of her upset-with-hubby bubble.
"You know Jaan, with the 'Curse of Malhotra' and the number of kicks that your brat's been giving me, I can safely assure you that it's not a girl..."
"Chuck that curse Darling! There is nothing like that ok? Now, are you ready or not? I need to reach the court soon and so we must leave now..."
Shravan asked his wife who nodded slowly at him. He didn't want to waste his time on the stupid curse that his younger brother had made up. Their family had only produced sons for three generations in a row and after the birth of Varun's son, his wacko brother was going on and on about how the Malhotra household was never going to have a daughter and so on and so forth. Shravan just rolled his eyes at the sheer ridiculousness of this thought.
"Aree kahan kho gaye? Ab jaana nahi hai Tiwari Killa?"
Suman was looking at him and he just shrugged and helped her to get down from the stool. He led her out the closet, grabbing his black blazer and her small duffle.
The Tiwari's were in India for some relative's wedding and they had invited the Malhotra family for Preeti Bhoj tonight. Shravan was to drop his wife off to Tiwari Killa first so that she could spend her day with Nanu and then head off to court himself. He would join them later in the evening. Lalaji, Varun and Vandy Bhabhi were in Chandigarh for a client's anniversary celebrations or something. They would be arriving later tonight. The rest of the Malhotra's would reach Tiwari Killa in the evening.
Shravan slowly led his heavily pregnant wife out of their room and down the stairs, tightly holding her hand. Since it was the peak of monsoon season in Delhi, he couldn't take any risks with his forever clumsy wife. He himself would safely deliver her to Tiwari Killa and ensure that she is as far away from slippery water puddles as possible. They couldn't take any chances now...not at this stage. His wife may find him a bit paranoid but he didn't care.
Soon the new parents-to-be reached their car and Shravan gently and carefully made his wife sit in the back seat of his car and buckled the seatbelt securely. He thanked the heavens as it had not rained that morning but the black clouds looked foreboding and Shravan had an uneasy feeling creeping up his spine. But he just shrugged it off and sat in his Mercedes. They were soon driving off to Tiwari Killa.
They were about to reach their destination and Shravan glanced in the rearview mirror to look at his beautiful wife. She was busy looking out the window while right hand caressed her swollen belly. She looked pale and had a frown on her face. This made him worry and he inquired about it too but his Suman just smiled at him, shaking her head in negative.
Though Shravan was not convinced, he let it go as they had reached Tiwari Killa. He drove up to the porch ignoring his wife's protests. He cut the engine and got out to help Suman who just huffed in annoyance but was royally ignored by him. He was amazed, really. She had dealt with his over protectiveness for almost eight months now but she still wasn't used to it.
Shravan and Suman entered through the door and were greeted by Mausaji and Mamaji who ushered them in the living room. But when Shravan looked down at Suman he saw she was breathing a bit heavily so he led her directly in her old room and made her sit down.
"Sumo...are you alright? You look pale darling. Are you not feeling well? Do you want me to call the doctor and Maa? Are you hurting somewhere? If you want-"
"Shut up Shravan!! Let me breath ok? I'm fine just a little bit winded that's all..."
But Shravan wasn't convinced and kept hovering over her. Didn't she once call him her protective big bear? So now he was just being her protective grizzly bear!
Just then his phone rang but knowing it was his PS, he cut the call. Suman held his hand and made him sit beside her on the bed. Her small soft hand was rubbing his large one, then intertwining their fingers together.
"Jaan, stop worrying so much. I'm fine. Baby Malhotra is fine in here, though a bit active but fine otherwise ok?"
Before Shravan could reply, his phone rang again. It seemed he was right about one of the witnesses ditching them before today's hearing and thus the constant calls.
"I think you are getting late Jaan. You should leave now before it starts to rain and water and traffic clog the streets of Delhi...!"
Shravan just snorted at that but stood up anyway.
"Sumo if you feel anything, and by anything I mean anything, you will call me and inform me ok? And also-"
"Yes Mommy...I will call you if I feel anything, and by anything I mean anything!"
Suman laughed at his expense but he wasn't amused. But wasn't she the mother? She would know if anything was wrong, right? Shravan sighed for the umpteenth time that morning. He was sure to go crazy even before the baby pops out!
Slowly, Shravan knelt down in front of his wife, his palm flat on her stomach. He felt a light kick and a smile involuntarily made his lips tug heavenwards.
"Promise?"
He looked up at his wife who had a soft expression on her face admiring him. A rebellious strand of hair hung low on his forehead, messing up his always perfect hairstyle. She gently pushed it up and tucked it back in its place with her free hand.
"Pakka promise..."
Suman whispered. Shravan kissed her swollen belly first then kissed their intertwined hands. He got up to leave but stopped when he felt a tug on their intertwined hands making him look down at his wife questioningly.
"Shravan aaj jaldi ghar waapas aajana... please?"
Suman's eyes looked somewhat anxious but Shravan nodded his head anyway.
"Promise?"
"Promise darling..."
Shravan bent down to kiss her on her forehead and then straightened up. She gave him a smile and let go of his hands. He retracted his steps to the door, without turning away from her. Once at the door, he looked at his Sumo with all the love that he had in him, a warm content smile making its way to his lips. He looked at her one last time before leaving.
Suman sat there on her old bed, wearing her blue maternity mock and her long hair open and framing her face. The most content smile adorned her pale features. She gave a small wave to him with her left hand while her right hand rested on her stomach.
Shravan wanted to imprint this image for forever in his brain. He closed his eyes, burning the image in the back of his eyelids.
With a wave, he left not knowing that the unsettling feeling in the pit of his stomach was not going to leave him for the rest of the day.
And it was going to be a very long day...
To be continued...
