Hmmm..read your replies...
I am not all defending Shravan...I am just providing a nuanced view on this..Let me try to explain myself better when I said that Shravan should not apologise for his conduct...
Imagine a scenario...where Adi molests Sumo and then he is say kicked out...let me here play the devil's advocate (no I don't mean Adi's advocate đ!!)
what is Shravan supposed to feel? Remorse that he spoke in that fashion to Adi that got him in that state? or Relief that Sumo is out of harm's way? or A bit of anger that Sumo let herself be subjected to all this? (by this I don't mean molestation...but the agony of being involved with a man she did not clearly love) For me its is relief and anger but not remorse...Think about this deeply...the remorse can only be for his misogyny that perhaps equates his thinking to men like Adi..at some level. Which is why I maintain as women we need to examine our positions at every step so that we are not falling for the positions of misogyny ourselves even as we talk of our self-respect.
My view is that CVs have not completely thought thru when they decided to turn Shravan into a misogynist. Its a tuf role to give your male protagonist. I am not sure how well they will handle this issue from here on.
What Shravan said and the reason he said this is at the core of the issue. What was his intention behind saying this... Lets just say his main intention was to get a rise out of Adi, because he is constantly troubling him on the issue of his friendship with Sumo. So he says it okay...there u go...deal with this...now this is the part I am not comfortable with becos ..it somewhere means that this is an aspect that men like Shravan, Aditya consider a matter to get hassled over...That was the main reason for my discomfort. At that moment it equated Shravan and Aditya. If Shravan had said this as a man not having any misogynistic traits...I would have condoned it as a ploy to irritate the highly irritating Aditya but unfortunately that is not true..so Shravan has to get his ideas about women in order soon...So how they will treat this issue now on will determine how Shravan's characterisation shapes up.
I don't know if I explained my stance better. Its just that I don't consider it a big issue that the marriage will break on this ground. It is better it breaks on this ground becos men like Aditya have to accept that that a past relationship is no reason to force a woman to comply. If the past makes you insecure, first learn to deal with it...Having said that, Shravan had no business lying about that matter not becos it has anything to do with that so called "female modesty" but simply becos it was a lie and Sumo was not part of that convo. So essentially what he indulged in is trash talk which he has to apologise for.
