I am not good at summarising episodes so I refrain from it...while I am not giving out any summary, i felt compelled to write this post though I would have rather done a post after watching tomorrow's episode.
First of all, I would like to say I watched the episode and pretty much liked it. Yes, there were aspects that could have been handled with greater finesse but largely the episode looked on track in terms of what the writer/director wanted to achieve for the character Shravan.
Secondly, I would like to confess that I had watched one OLV on mute so I had no idea of the dialogues i missed...đ
Thirdly, I absolutely grant that anyone who watched the OLV and watched the episode is most likely to be disappointed with the episode. I also grant a fair number who did not watch the OLV would also be disappointed.đđ
I grant there are many ways in which a post accident scenario can be shot...make it look dramatic, up the drama quotient...or make it understated. EDKV has pretty much gone for the understated on most occasions so I am not surprised that they kept it low on drama quotient. It works for me as a viewer...Again I was not making comparisons to the Ramnath death announcement becos I don't think the two instances are perfectly comparable. for the simple reason, there Shravan was delivered with the finality of an announcement so he just folded up. Here Shravan was in the thick of things, he was reacting to the chain of events on an autopilot mode...(for want of a better expression). when one is a situation that demands an emergency actionable response, there are perhaps only two ways people react..either they just fold up and go mute or they just go thru the motions...as if there is a feature in your brain telling you the next steps in the chain. Shravan was literally doing that..working on autopilot. All that happened in reflexiveness.which is so characteristic of how a lot of people including intense lovers, react to a calamity. Since we have been fed on healthy diet of filmy post accident scenes of lengthy dialogues and intense drama...in comparison this scenes must have felt short...đ
Shravan's actual awareness of the enormity of the event began to start sinking though not completely after he had been held off at the entrance of the OT. Parts realisation of what had just happened to Sumo..his FB replaying the Accident in its detail as was witnessed by him and parts action seemed to characterise his behaviour there..him calling up her family, again deliberately the call from Ram did not focus on Shravan's reaction..Shravan's reflective moments about the accident happened in the quieter moments of inaction while he waited for news from the OT.I don't know how many of you noticed this, Shravan's character is always mellow when he is not angry, He is an extremely gentle person so that stayed in character when he talked to the doctor, Namik's modulation of voice perfectly conveying the helplessness of someone who has to submit his fate over to another, in this case, the doctor. I found the form filling activity again a very beautiful scene. The import of that relationship he shares with Sumo..canit be encapsulated in a word? Him breaking down when he sees Pushkar comes as his first articulation of his fear, scared to voice his fears yet has to confide in Pushkar his worry. His eyes darting to the OT, knowing that there is not much he can do except wait for the news to come in.
I would just like to say...there is a very deliberate reason why the FBs for before the accident have not figured in his consciousness, it will soon come into play...By no means is this over...please do not think that you have seen Shravan's impressions of this event...which was one of the reasons why I wanted to do the post tommo rather than today...đ
Just a small pointer...If we keep an expectation of intensity from the character, we then calibrate the intensity level which in my view mars the scene. Think back about how the character of Shravan behaves in a scene of pain...he is reflective, introspective...he showed a lot of that characteristic today...Kudos to the writers and directors who eschewed the lure to trade drama with real substance...having said that..a lot of scenes needed more finesse..and better execution.
Please do post your comments...will love to listen to all views, whether they concur with mine or not.
No post is ever complete without a shout out to Indrani, J and Red...đ
