"Suman!" She heard her grandfather's voice. "You are back?"
She locked the door and turned on the lights.
"Yeah... Neerav sent me back early today." She went to her grandfather's room and yet again he was on his typewriter.
"Do you think two in the morning is early?" Her grandfather scolded her.
"Well, do you think two in the morning is the time for using that ancient typewriter." She tied her hair up and went to the kitchen.
"It is not ancient... it's precious." Her grandfather yelled from the room and she smiled. "And I was just about to go to sleep."
"Who are you lying to?" She said back from the kitchen as she prepared herself a quick dinner. "I know you don't sleep until I get back home safely."
"Well... what am I supposed to do if you don't care for yourself? I have to be your mom." Her grandfather said sadly. "I have to be your mom and be on your case always, or else you would probably live at that restaurant. Anyways, I am going to sleep. Eat and then straight go to sleep."
"Yeah..." She whispered.
Mom. It was such a bitter word for her. She didn't believe it anymore. She didn't even think about her mother anymore. Her mother had left her scratched and cold. Her mother broke Suman's already broken world again and again.
She shook her head and ate her dinner. She didn't want to disturb her brother so she changed and got herself a blanket and laid down on the couch. The couch felt so comfortable that she felt asleep right when her head hit the pillow.
Exactly at six-thirty her eyes opened and she got up and did her morning rituals. By the time it was Seven-thirty she had already cooked breakfast and got ready for work. She took a long breath and went to wake up her brother. When she opened the door, she smiled. Neil was lying on top of his books, sleeping... well snoring.
"Neil..." She picked up books from around him. "Neil... it's morning now. The sun is up." She lightly hit him with a book on his back. "Breakfast is ready." She ruffled his hair and left him to wakeup fully when she saw his sleepy eyes open
Both of them had grown up way before they were supposed to. They took responsibility earlier than the normal young adults. Kids at their age would party and get tensed about exams and test, on the other hand, they worried about their financial status and how to provide for each other. They took responsibility of their grandfather when everyone left them alone in their cruel chaotic world. But she learned valuable lessons from her experiences.
She realized that the meaning of her happiness was in little things that she shared with her family and co-workers. Nothing could make her happier than when she was with her grandfather and her brother. It was when they argued about chess, TV shows, and their favorite celebrities. Once in a while they went out either on a picnic or to watch a movie. Her world was not that rich and sparkly anymore, but she was happy in her simple little world. Still, she missed him, and she missed him like a hell. Somedays when things got out of her hands, she wanted to pick up the phone and tell him. She wanted to open her wounds to him, and ask him to heal her, but she was afraid of rejection. She was rejected so many times and by her own people that she was scared he was going to say no to her too.
"How many times have I told you to let me make the breakfast. You come so late and tired. I can at least do that much for you." Neil got mad at her yet again.
"You just Ace your exams and I'll be happy." She pulled her cheeks and laughed. "I am leaving. Give breakfast to Grandpa and refill the medicine, please. I left the money on the fridge."
She hugged him and bid him good bye. When she got out of her flat, it didn't feel as cold as last night. For some reason, the sun was high up and shinning like it's gonna be no tomorrow. The weather was really nice. It was kind of a day for a family day out, but unfortunately, this month's costs were getting out of their normal budget so she had to work extra hours. She at least enjoyed the sun as she walked to her work.
When she reached the restaurant, she was surprised to see Neerav in the kitchen this early in the morning.
"I am surprised to see you here and at this time." As soon as she got there, she started working on cutting the vegetable.
"SUMUUU!!" Neerav shouted her name and hugged her.
"What happened to you?" She stared at him suspiciously.
"I finally get to be a full-time chef." He happily tipped his chef hat.
"Yesss... I am so happy for you!!!" She pulled Neerav's cheeks.
"Stop doing that to me." He pushed her away and she chuckled.
"So who is going to take over the administrative duties."
"My cousin Sh-" Neerav bit his tongue. "Oh, crap I forgot to tell you. I have organized a dinner for them today. My whole family is coming over. Can you please look at the management for the dinner. It's really a big tension for me. I'll have Riya look over the restaurant today. Please, it's really important for me. I beg you." He smirked and she knew there was something coming up that she wouldn't be able to resist. "And you get to go home early if you do what I say."
"Fine... Fine, I'll do it." She smiled at him. "I am really happy that you are back in the kitchen, but unfortunately, I'll be the victim of your new recipes' experiment."
"Yes, you'll be the one tasting everything I'll be trying in the kitchen. That's why I love you sooo much, Sumu." He smirked yet again.
She groaned at that thought. "Love you too."
The day flew by and she didn't even realize it. The dinner was a big deal for Neerav so she wanted everything on point. She was overlooking one final time when one of the workers told her that Neerav's family has arrived. She was going to the kitchen to get the drinks ready when she heard her name.
"Sumu!" She heard an excited voice. She turned around and got confused for a second to see him there.
"Pushkar?" She asked him confusingly. "What are you doing here?"
"Sumuuu!!!" He came and hugged her. "It's good to see you, and I am here for the family dinner."
"What?" She got more confused. "You are related to Neerav?"
"Yeah. His mom is related to us."
Us. Oh my god, please no. No... Not him. "What do you mean by us?" She held her breath as she waited for him to answer.
"Shravan and I." he excitedly answered. "Oh, that reminds me that he is gonna be here too today. So you'll get to see him. it's been too long-"
She tuned Pushkar out as soon as she heard that. She didn't want to see him. Yes... she was a coward. She didn't want to see him. She didn't have the courage and enough strength to open her past wounds.
"I have to go." She didn't even wait for his reply.
She knew she needed to get away. He couldn't know that she was here. She held on to the nearby table as her legs started shaking. God, she couldn't breathe. Why was he here? Of every place in the world, why was he in this such a small town? She closed her eyes and tried to breathe. It hurt to breathe... her heart hurt. Her eyes burned and she wanted to just run away from here. She took a breath and headed to the kitchen. Neerav wasn't there so she asked the assistant and they told her that he was in his office.
She headed down to his office and knocked on the door. He was getting ready when she went in.
"Thank god you are here. I need your help so bad." He held up two ties and asked her. "Which one?"
"The dark red one." She tried to smile. "What happened? Why did you get ready here?"
"I got so busy in the kitchen that I didn't even realize where did time go. So, I didn't have the time to drive all the way home and then come back. I just wore one of the back up suits I have here. So, here I am now helpless with the tie. Someone helps me at home, so please help me tie this."
She chuckled and shook her head. He looked like a helpless kid. She took the tie and tied it around his neck. She fixed his tie and stepped back.
"You look handsome." She patted his shoulder.
"Thanks, you are a sweetheart." Neerav kissed her cheek and she smiled.
The moment she turned around she froze where she was. Her breath got stuck in her throat. She was thrown back five years as those accusing eyes stared at her.
