Part 19

The next day dawned but that didn't help to lessen the turmoil which Raghu & Antara were going through in their hearts & minds. The entire house was engulfed in dead silence as if nobody ever existed there. They hadn't made any efforts to speak to each other as they felt nothing remained to say or do after seeing the divorce papers...

Antara hadn't slept the entire night dealing with the pang & loneliness that had invaded her heart...Why did her life suddenly felt so empty & broken by the fact that Raghu was planning to leave her...She didn't know what she would happen to her once she sees his signatures on those papers...

"Why am I so much affected? There was really nothing in this relationship so it's better to divorce & start a life afresh!!!I should be happy for the separation as I had always planned to remain single in life & follow my ambitions!!!!"

She clenched her fists trying hard to convince herself & also dissuade tears from falling...

On the other hand, Raghu was exercising aggressively in the gym...why was he in so much pain when he knew the divorce had to happen one day...& even he wanted the same, didn't he??Then why did he strongly feel that things were changing in their marital life for good when in reality it was not...And that was proved by the fact that Antara wanted divorce from him...so why should he step back!!

"Fine!!! If she wants divorce, then so be it!!!!!!!! And I don't find any reason why we shouldn't separate!!!! It will be better for her as well as for me!!! Even though our marriage was real, it was still a contract'a contract of six months which is near expiry!!!!!!!!"

In anger & aggression, Raghu headed straight in the house & proceeded towards the table where the divorce papers were kept. He was just about to sign them...but he realized he just couldn't...all the memories with Antara flashed the nth time in front of his eyes making him fragile...He fought with himself but to no avail...He tried to sign again but he wasn't able to...Lines of frustration made their way on his forehead...

Just then Antara came in the hall & saw him with the pen & divorce papers...She was shocked with her heart breathed in pain but she somehow controlled her emotions...

Their eyes met...& the silence in the air became all the more thick...They suddenly felt strangers standing in front of each other...as if nothing ever was there between them on the first place...They had nothing to speak...They hated each other as well as yearned for each other at the same time...Their feelings & emotions were on the verge of outburst but they kept it bottled within themselves...

Raghu left for office without saying a word. Antara was assuming that he had already signed the divorce papers & now it was her turn...but when she had a look, the papers weren't signed yet! Somewhere she felt a bit relieved but she refused to acknowledge that.

"Now that everything is over, why am not I able to sign the papers...!!!!!!!!"

Their ego was neither letting them understand their feelings for each other not letting them to clarify the misunderstanding...

The rest of the day Antara tried to divert her mind in various ways but the truth was she was broken from within even though she tried lots to deny it. By evening she grew restless when there was no sign of Raghu returning home. She thought of calling him but then criticized her own idea.

"I don't care at all!!!! Mujhe koi pharak nahi padhta!!!!!!"

But still she was concerned. After a lot of tussle with herself, Antara finally gave in & called up in office. She was told that Raghu had left for New Zealand for two days for a business deal'.

"Raghu didn't even bother to tell me about this trip!!!!!!" she was bruised, "Fine!!!!!!As if I care!!!! If he has already moved on, so can I!!!!!!!"

The next day the results of the fashion course were to be declared. Antara was pretty confident that the results would be in her favor & she would finally fulfil her dream of becoming a fashion designer & start a new life with an ambitions career ahead & this would help her to forget about Raghu completely! But nothing of that sort happened...No doubt she topped the institution & even got some promising fashion assignments to start with, still that didn't heal her pain & turmoil. Inspite of the win, she still felt like she lost everything that made her life worth living...Her career didn't matter to her when her life itself was in jeopardy...

Antara finally started reflecting that no other person or thing in the world can substitute the happiness & belongingness that she had unknowingly felt with Raghu'.Also, she had not seen him for one whole day, her heart turned restless. She reached home with her mind full of confusion, sadness & loneliness... Her ego was losing...

There was a knock on the door. Antara opened it to find Mrs D'costa with a smile on her face & a chocolate cake in her hand.

"You know, it's Mr D'costa's birthday!" she said offering a piece of cake to Antara.

Antara knew Mr D'costa had died years ago due to some prolonged illness. Mrs D'costa grew emotional.

"Every year I celebrate his birthday. He was a free-spirited & jolly man, We both madly loved each other & we got this beautiful bungalow constructed as a symbol of our love. In all this years, there hasn't been one day when I haven't missed him..."

She paused a little.

"It's very difficult to lead a lonely life. You need someone with whom you can double your joys & lessen your sorrows., with whom you can feel heaven even on earth. Mr D'costa always wanted me to be cheerful, come what may. So after his death, I had decided to rent this penthouse to young mushy mushy couples so that by seeing them happy & cuddling together, I feel Mr D'costa's is always there with me."

And her next words shocked Antara to the roots!

"I feel immense joy whenever I see Raghu & you together. I know it must have been very difficult for both of you to act as a lovey- dovey couple because I know the reality...but believe me Antara, I have seen selfless love in both of your eyes for each other. Both of you just have to realize & accept this love to make your life blissful."

Antara just didn't know what to say & blankly stared at Mrs D'costa as she left...

"That means...that means she knew from the very beginning we were pretending to be in love...!"

Antara fell on the bed staring up at the ceiling...& her thoughts ran deep...

It was Sid-Lorry's wedding day. Raghu had promised them that he would be back before the rituals but things didn't fall in place as the flight got delayed. Antara didn't feel like attending the marriage without Raghu but she went thinking it would ease her a bit.

Antara saw Sid & Lorry seated in the mandap & remembered how in her own wedding, she & Raghu had run away from the marriage venue only to be brought back by the police!

Then the wedding rituals began...Sid & Lorry made each other wear garlands. Then the pandit began reciting mantras & both of them were taking saath pheras. Antara remembered her own seven rounds with Raghu...She felt glad that the pandit was not the fake one'.Everything was fresh in her memories...how Raghu tied manglasutra to her & even put sindoor...Her eyes became moist & her heart beats were fast...

"I love you Raghu...love you so much..."

The words formed on her lips as realization struck her...She realized that she had fallen in love with him long back but had taken a lot of time to accept it...She stood there numb, her hands ran cold at the fact that it was way too late now since Raghu had already decided for divorce...

"No! He can't leave me! I will not let that happen! Main unhe bataungi ki main unse kitna pyaar karti hoon...& may be even he love me...!"

Wiping her tears, she hurriedly sat in her car & made her way to Raghu's office. He should have returned from New Zealand by now...

"Sharanya, I can't do this!!" Raghu took a deep breath, "I can't divorce Antara! I couldn't stay two days without her which makes it impossible to think of the entire life time without her!"

Raghu was back in Singapore after signing the business deal. Those two days were the most difficult days of his life. He realized that Antara was as important to him as his breaths. Perhaps that was the sole reason why he agreed to accompany her to Singapore from India on the first place.

"And...???" sharanya probed him.

"I love Antara!!"

He found it hard to deny that.

"Finally!! Someone has accepted his feelings!!! Now go & tell it to her & now puh-lease don't let ego come in between saying that she has to confess first & all!! Ego can ruin any relationship!"

"Yeah! I don't know whether she loves me or not but I am going to let her know about my feelings & she has to fall in love with me!!"

"Wah! Kya baat hai! Even though I'm kinda heart broken but still koi nahi, I am happy for you!!!!!!"

Saying that, Sharanya hugged Raghu tightly.

"Drama queen!!"

He remarked & smiled hugged her back...

And that's when Antara came there & saw Sharanya & Raghu hugging each other...That was a severe blow to her. She could make out that the girl was Sharanya. Antara saw Raghu's smile & misunderstood it to be because of Sharanya...

"That means...Raghu loves this girl & so wants to divorce me??? He was in New Zealand with her."

That's the notion Antara had formed of him. She left from there quietly. She walked aimlessly on the road not sure whether anything was left in her life to live for...Her heart was paralyzed in pain. It began raining heavily & her eyes let go of the huge amount of tears that she had trapped within herself. Raghu was not hers, the thought killed her soul. The fact that he did not love her destroyed her further...Her world had crashed into pieces & she did not have the strength to build it back...She felt so incomplete, so lonely & held her own self responsible for everything...

She somehow reached home & the divorce papers were still on the table. Her face was pale & eyes red & lifeless...

"Raghu did the right thing...I only fought & argued with him...I deserve this...And I am no one to take away his happiness...If he is happy with Sharanya, I won't stop him...He deserves the best girl as his life partner...I will give him divorce & free him from this relationship..."

Her fingers were shivering but still she took the pen in her hand...With a heavy & bruised heart, Antara signed the divorce papers...
