Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with performing puja is an age old custom in hindu society.. but it was like family affair.. pepople used to do it at their homes only..

but In order to unite common public to fight against British Raj.. Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak started public celebration of Ganesh Utsav and Shiv Jayanti in Maharashtra around 1893.
