Found something interesting about the worship of shiva-linga.

Random Musings-Part 32- The Worship of Shiva Linga

Nithin Sridhar

Shiva Linga means "Shiva's Symbol". Here Shiva refers to Para-Brahman. Adi Shankara defines the word Shiva as "the very nature of Chit & Anand". Hence, Shiva refers to Para-Brahman, who is One without a second, without form and without attributes. And this Nirguna Brahman is worshiped through a symbol- the Linga. Further, the Linga is not only a Symbol of Para-Brahman, it is Brahman itself. Linga Purana says "Lingas sakshaan Maheshwarah". In other-words, Shiva Linga is Para-Brahman itself which is available as Linga (Saguna Brahman) for worship.

The Shiva Linga can be divided into two portions-

1. The vertical Shaft that is called as Linga

2. The Horizontal Platform that is called as Yoni or Adishtana

There are broadly three ways in which the symbolism of Linga and Yoni and their mutual relationship can be understood-

1. The more popular understanding is that, the Yoni or pedastal represents Shakti and the Linga/Shaft represents Shiva- "linga vedi mahadevi lingam sakshat maheshwarah". Hence, Shiva Linga denotes the Union of Shiva-Shakti or Purusha-Prakriti. Hence, Shiva-Linga as a whole is Para-Brahman itself who is depicted in his Saguna aspect as Shiva & Shakti in Cosmic Union.

2. According to another interpretation, the Shaft/Linga portion is called as "Rudra Bhaga", the Adhishtana portion is called as Vishnu Bhaga and the portion hidden below the Pedastal is called as Brahma-Bhaga. Hence, Shiva-Linga as a whole represents Para-Brahman itself which manifests as the trinity in Saguna aspect. Upanishads say that the Universe is born out of Brahman, is sustained in Brahman and finally dissolves in Brahman. Hence, Shiva Linga represents Para-Brahman who is creator (Brahma), sustainer (Vishnu) & destroyer (Rudra) of Universe. Linga purana also says that "layanaal lingam ity uktam".

3. The third interpretation is a Samkhyan interpretation. According to this view, "Linga" is another name for Prakriti or Pradhana. Hence, the Shaft/Linga represents Prakriti and the Adhishtana represents Purusha. This Purusha is called as "Lingin"- the bearer/supporter of Linga/Prakriti. In Vedanta, the Prakriti is called "Maya" and is described as "Ishwara-Aashrita" i.e. supported by Ishwara. Hence, Shiva Linga as a whole represents Para-Brahman in Saguna aspect as Purusha who is bearer of Prakriti or Shiva/Ishwara who is bearer of Shakti/Maya. The Shaft portion signifies that the whole Universe which is Prakriti is born out of & sustained in Brahman, who is the substratum of Universe.

Hence, in all three interpretations, the imagery of Shiva-Linga represents Para-Brahman who is Nirguna & beyond perception but has himself manifested as Linga- a perceivable form (i.e. as Saguna). It is to be noted that the interpretation of Linga=Phallus and Yoni=Vagina has practical application only in certain Tantric Sadhanas like Shiva lata mudra. In such Sadhanas, the Sadhaka self identifies himself with Bhairava & his partner with Bhairavi. And their Sexual Union leads to Samadhi. Only in such Sadhana, that the first symbolism of Cosmic Union of Shiva & Shakti translates practically into Sexual Union of Bhairava & Bhairavi.

Also found an interesting news piece about Kartikeya .
A temple where devotees offer chocolate bars to Lord Muruga

ALAPPPUZHA (Kerala): Ever heard of a temple where mouth-watering chocolate bars are offered by devotees to the presiding deity?

While devotees offer flowers, sandal paste and fruits to invoke divine blessing, the 'Thekkan Palani' Balasubramania temple differs as chocolate bars are offered in the sanctum sanctorum.

Chocolate bars of a leading brand are made as offering by devotees and they get them back as 'prasdam' after poojas.

No wonder, the presiding deity of the shrine located at Subrahmanyapuram on the outskirts of the the town is known locally as " Munch Murugan."

According to temple authorities, people, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, come to the shrine with cartons of chocolates, seeking the blessings of Lord Muruga.

Naturally, children flock to the temple in large numbers, especially during the examination season.

No one knows for certain how or when the ritual of offering chocolate began.

"The principal deity in the temple is 'Balamurugan', Lord Muruga as child. Somebody who thought that the child Muruga likes chocolate, might have begun the practise first," temple manager D Radhakrishnan said.

He said chocolates are given back to devotees as 'prasadam' like flowers and sandal paste after 'pushpanjali' or 'archana'.

Chocolate is also used for rituals like 'thulabhara' along with other traditional articles like flowers and jaggery.

A large number of devotees, even those from other states and foreigners, visit the temple with boxes of chocolates.

In the initial days, children were those who offered chocolates. But now, devotees of all ages, including the elderly, offer chocolates to the Lord Muruga, he said.

The shrine, managed by a 21-member trust, was built by an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga as a family temple decades back. He was frequent pilgrim to the famous Muruga temple in Palani in Tamil Nadu.

The temple lore has it that Lord Muruga once appeared in his dreams and asked him to build a shrine in his village.

The shrine was recently renovated to improve facilities in view of the rush of devotees, temple officials said.

Murugan or Kartikeya (also called Subramanya) is the son of the lord Shiva.

Okay, seeing the episode yesterday made me curious - why are they showing Nahusha become king of the devas again?

We saw him become king once post Jalandhar tracks, and then the Ravan track followed. But now they're showing it again?

Also, I'm now convinced, for reasons I've discussed in the past, that Asokasundari's Nahusha is different from Sachi's Nahusha, and that the former wasn't the one who ruled the devas or continued the Chandra vansh.

They've changed the actors for both Asokasundari & Nahusha? And why does Asokasundari wear a pallu, when her mom doesn't?

Asokasundari is the same, Ahsaas.
Nahush is some Rishi Khurana who looks like he has the brain the size of Crabbe's.
Even I am thinking about taht now.
But it was this Nahusha who continued Chandra vamsha, beause his father is Ayu. They have just made some mixture of some stories.😆
BUt since Nahusha's and ASokasundari's story is in Padma Purana, where he is the son of AYu, who knows...

But Yayati's mom was not Asokasundari. So even though the name of the parents of both the Nahusha's are same, the wives' names are different and hence the divergence.

Also, it's highly unlikely that Mahadev or Parvati would have not warned their SIL about the pitfalls of becoming devraj, or tolerate him being a python for the better part of 2 yugas.

What was Nahusha's wife's name again? (I remember you told it once during the first Nahush track).
You know, thats why I like to visualise AS as an unmarried girl.. when I saw the episode when Parvati told her about marriage I was like WTH, but you can't do anything about it. YOu want to select a to-be-cursed king as a groom - your choice.

That's why I don't believe that the 2 Nahushas are one & the same. The timelines also differ greatly - one was during the Satya Yuga, after Vritra's death, and the other was in the Treta or Dwapar Yuga. I once discussed it w/ Kal El.

The Nahusha who married Asokasundari - his mom's name was Indumati. The one who fathered Yayati & went after Sachi & got cursed by Agastya - his mom was Prabha and his wife Viraja: Viraja was Yati & Yayati's mom.

One thing though - he was the only one who could subdue Bhima (aside from the lake Yaksha). Also, from his bhashan exchange w/ Yudisthir, looks like he was very interested in the caste system. He, rather than Karna, would have been a good poster child for what virtues are or aren't determined by caste.
