That TOI article is wrong. This is the story according to rival site.

Amrapali is back on the small screen in a new avatar. She will be seen essaying the important role of Matsya Kanya in Triangle Film Company's DKDM. Matsya Kanya is a mermaid who is very expectant to become a mother after laying her eggs. However, when the devtas damage the eggs, the mermaid gets an aversion to Gods. As the story unfolds, Matsya Kanya will be the one who will bring up Jalandhar, who will go on to be a demon king, the enemy of Mahadev.

When contacted, Amrapali Gupta confirmed her entry in Mahadev stating, "Yes, I am essaying the role of Matsya Kanya. I have started shooting for it from yesterday. It is a challenging role considering the importance of Matsya Kanya in the mytho. I have a very beautiful look as Matsya Kanya. She will be the one who will bring up Jalandhar."

The role was earlier to be played by Parvati Sehgal of Pratigya fame. However, Amrapali was brought in at the last moment.

We hear that Matsya kanya's entry episode will be aired tomorrow (19 March 2013)
