I think the concept of 'possessing' a god is pretty common in our purans. Not only goddesses, but even narad muni and bhakts have been known to occasionally fall in this trap of wanting the god all to themselves. I guess when you attach yourself to such a higher being, it becomes your duty to understand that the god belongs to every one in this world.
How come no one ever sees shiv's troubles? only a woman's tears? Shiv has to constantly protect his bhakts and even those who disregard him, he has to always sacrifice his happiness and life for the sake of the greater good. Is it too much to ask that his adi-shakti place the greater good above herself like he does? How else does one truely become the 'other half'?
I see nothing wrong with Shiv's behaviour. This is not a normal human couple and to be bound by human emotions of desire and need are not becoming of a god or goddess. Even lakshmi left Hari before manthan, but neither complained because they knew there was a greater good in it. that's what being a deity is all about...
