Hello Everyone,

I need a favor from all of you. I was wondering if someone can suggest where I can find a genuine source for Shiv puran and other related books for Hinduism.

Thank You. 😊

You might try Shiv Puran as translated to English by B.K. Chaturvedi. Also there is another translated by Dr. Mahendra Mittal. These are translations which are trying to come closer to the original in their use of language, but are still simple enough to read easily. If you like to read more of a prose version which has some artistic embellishment but still captures the beautiful spirit of the puran, you might try Ramesh Menon's "Siva - the Shiv Puran Retold"> I have read it and it is very enjoyable.

For other texts, there are the Itihasas (Ramayan, Mahabharata - which contains the Gita) and then there are the Upanishads and the Veds, and all the other many many purans.

What kinds of things do you like to read? All of the texts are so beautiful, they are good for the soul but also you would know after reading that there is no place in the world like India for a story well told (or rather, thousands and thousands of stories)!

Every purana glorifys the Deity whose story it is. Same story is depicted in different ways in various puranas. That's why instead of taking them as it is always try to analyse & reach the conclusion, that's what I always emphasise on.
This show folows many puranas stories, that's why if one takes Shiv puran & judges the show, is bound to get disappointed.
We all depend on Puranas to know about our representatives of faith. So depending on them to learn & know about various Deities is obvious, but also refer to other sourse to confirm some facts. eg Shivji is depicted as Mahayogi in Puranas, but to know more about Yoga, he explained one has to refer to other Yoga related scriptures created by him.
Puranas never mentions exact order of events, that's when we see many tracks with added creativity, many members gets confused.
That's why I have always said refer to other scripts also then Puranas to know more.

Thank You very much 😊

I am Gujarati, but I moved to US when I was young so I don't know much about India or the religion, just what my parents have told me & the traditions they follow. But I am very interested in knowing more. I am almost done with school so I am planning on going to India and learning more. But until I go to India, I wanted to get a head start. I can speak my language and read a little, thus, I wanted something that was easy to read and follow. I have seen some English translations, but even they are a bit tricky to understand. Thank you once again.
