That's correct. This story was at earliest a treta yuga story, since after the killing of Mahishi, Parashurama appears b4 the ruler who was Manikanthan's foster father and sculpts a statue for him (another thing weird about this story being that Parashurama, who was normally bloodthirsty when it came to kshatriyas, did nothing to this ruler, but on the contrary, built a statue for him).

vrish- its like the temple of Dharma Shasta was already there, built by Parashurama. Later after killing Mahishi Lord Manikantha gets merged into the idol of Shasta which was installed by Parashuraama. Parashurama never gave the idol to Paandya King as far as I know. This is the history of Shabarimala temple according to priests of the temple!
