it wasnt strained as such, its just that Ganapati Bappa got more attention, the favoured kid thing that even we have with our siblings
Kartikeya was a bit short tempered and an introvert(maybe he got that from his dad!),while Bappa was very intelligent and knew how to handel things better...
like when they asked both of them to take rounds of the "sansaar" Ganapati Ji took rounds of his parents,Mahadev and Parvati were floored by it...so you can imagine..😆
Kartikeya moved away from his parents on growing up while Bappa stayed with them...

but however when Mahadev and Parvati fought,Kartiykeya supported his dad, while Bappa was on his mothers side..
so that kinda balances it!

Except for the time when Mahadev cursed Parvati to be born as a fisherwoman. Both sons were upset with their father. 😆

Skand is also her child afterall...he will do what ever she order's ..Is't it?

Actually, this is an excellent question. She first asked Nandi & Bhrigni to guard her gates, but they didn't stop Mahadev. She could have asked Skanda to do it as well.

Only that Skanda knew that Mahadev is his father, whereas Ganesh/Vinayak didn't. So Skanda too wouldn't have stopped him. But that was unfair - couldn't she have invoked Durga or Kali to have guarded those gates, or was that either overkill, or demeaning for a goddess?

what happened in the case of Ganapati was that Kailash was full of men(it may have included Kartikeya as well),and none of them understood Parvatis need of privacy her being a woman and hence she had to make someone who understood her needs!

in ACK they have Kartikeya particiapting in the war that Shiva rages against Ganapati...

But isn't that strange? If males - be they ganas, Mahadev or Kartikeya - were unable to understand Parvati's need for privacy, how would Ganapati understand it? I don't think he understood anything - he just obeyed what his mother ordered, and refused to recognize that anyone else mattered. Nor did he have any realization that Mahadev is his father, even though Mahadev realized that he is his son.

Which brings me to my last question - couldn't Parvati have assigned this to Durga or Kali, who could surely have stopped him?

Really does she asked sage Bhrigni...too 😲 ,
what i heard is parvati 's frds jaya ,vijaya is her door keeper's (i don't know mahakali as her door keeper ,i have visited temples are kali is worshiped as guardian spirit at the entrance of the temple with separate sanctum sanatorium for it /not as a door keeper😆 ). But after her wedding with shiv ,during their initial days ,Nandhi had a quarrel with Jaya/vijaya ,that upset both parvati and her frds so much ...hence to teach these ganas a lesson she created Golu molu Ganesh ... 😆 (she is so mean ,that her privacy shouldn't be disturbed ,even by her pati👏) and ordered him as her loyal gate keeper and rest is known to every one ..so according to northern tradition ,was karthick present there in that scene ,where lord shiv slayed his cutie son Ganesh 's head ? ..Was Karthick too defeated by ganesh along with Nandhi and other ganas ..😕

i donno whether calling Lord ganesh is elder son is correct or not ,but why there is a need for parvati to maintain her privacy after having a son (skand) as per northern tradition ) with shivji😕
If she is newly married we can accept this as her uneasiness ,if she already having a son means( 🤣 i am going to stop here) this quarrel must be out burst before having their child itself 😆
