Its called Alta...its kind of dye...usually applied by women who are a part of theater dramas,Historic shows n most importantly Dance (classical)...and also is an important part of bengali culture..they apply this on their weddings instead of mehendi n Durga pooja.

Yes its called ALTA 😊

It was applied by women all over India(in south India too).It was part of the over-all "shringaar" of a woman.Married,un-married all women used to apply to their toes n fingers 😊

These days, people rarely apply,n i think u see only indian classical dancers using it.

I hav been training in bharathanatyam for over 12 years now,n I have 2 bottles of it(alta) in my room rite now 😛

oh and bout wher u can buy it?Well im frm karnataka, and here we can find it in any fancy store(a store where they sell all stuff related to women's make-up,hair brushes etc 😛 ) I think the same goes iwd the other parts of the country 😛

Abroad, pata nahi milta hai ki nahi 🤓 its just a kinda dye really. You can mix kumkum with water n reduce it a bit to make it thicker, you'll pretty much get the same thing i guess? 🤔 I did that once wen i was outta ALTA n had to be on stage in half n hour 😛

Ok, I'm a guy, so I know less about this than any of ya, but ain't alta something that only married women apply to the periphery of their feet? I've never seen it applied on hands.

Even i don't know much and didn't know what's it called till now but it can be applied both on hands and feet. women from all the age group can apply it. from a child to an old women and whether she is married or unmarried, relationship status doesn't matter. *i think*

alta is an important part of bengali culture
married woman use alta on their feet and its being used as mehendi too
even after death there was a ritual of taking foot prints of the dead person with alta
but these days uses of alta is becoming very rare

Well its different in different places i guess then.

Im not quite aware of the rituals in other parts of the country..so i can speak about only my place..Over here(im from karnataka,a kannadiga),its a little different..both married and un-married apply to both hands and feet and its just as a part of shringhaar, not any ritual or anything

Its rarely being used these days though.Mehendi(henna) has taken its place. These days we find only classical dancers apply it as i've said previously.

well m from bengal n here still we use Alta..it's a part of our culture...well my father not like so he never let me to use it...but it's nice..yes Disha is right we used it on classical performance...n still u can see the womens of Bonedi Family(the old joint family) still use it..they apply it in their foot n also in hands...it's a part of our wedding...n when we wear Saree in our old bengali culture that time we need it..bcz Bengali look never complete without Alta..still in weddings many family use Alta rather then Mehendi..
