Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple in Pune, India is a temple dedicated to the Hindu God Ganesh. The temple is located a short distance from the historicalShaniwar Wada fort, which was administrative headquarters of Peshwas of Maratha Empire. HISTORY:- The temple was founded in 1893 by Dagadusheth Halwai, a sweetmart seller who became a wealthy businessman. Halwai had lost his son the previous year, and at the request of his guru created murtis (image of a deity) of Ganesha and Dattatreya. He later established the Halwai Ganapati Trust. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, during the British Raj, gave a public form to the Ganesh festival celebrations as a way of getting around an order that barred public meetings.
TEMPLE TRUST:- The Halwai Ganapati Trust carries out philanthropic work from the donations received, and is one of the richest in Maharashtra. The trust operates an old age home called Pitashree at Kondhwa in Pune. The home was built at a cost of 1.5 crore (US$280,000) and opened in May 2003. In the same building the trust provides housing and education for 40 destitute children. Other services provided by the trust include ambulance service for poor and health clinics in tribal belts of Pune District.

Tarakeswar temple is a popular hundu pilgrimage destination in west bengal.the taraknath temple is located in the town of tarakeswar near sreerampur,hooghly dist.west bngal.the temple is devoted to lord shiva and supreme centre of shiva in west bengal.tarakeswar is located 58km from the city of kolkata,west bengal.

Legends and history of tarakeswar temple:

tarakeswar temple was eshtablished in 18^th century.there is a legend related to the formation of temple.vishnu das,a devotee to lord shiva immigrated with his familly from ayodhya(oudh).he and his familly memberes were not properly accepted by the local peoples and were viewed with utmost suspician.supposedly,vishnu das prooved his innocence grabbing hold of a red hot iron bar and earned a good reputation among the locals.

Some time later,vishnu's brother discovered a place nearby,where cattle released the milk in their udders at a specific location every day.after exploring the area.the brother found a shiva lingam on the spot.it is widely believed that the brothers had a devine dream which related to the shiva lingam was a manifestation of lord shiva in the form of Baba Tarakeswar.eventually a temple was built on the same spot which came to be known as Taraknath temple of Baba tarakeswar.

the tarakeswar temple is one of the prime pilgrimage destination in West Bengal.the structure of atchala which consist of a Nat mandir in the area,is the major attracktion of tarakeswar temple.there is also a shrine of laxmi-narayan and goddess kali nearby.there is a tank named 'Dudhpukur',which is located at the north side area of temple,is considered to fulfill the prayers of devotees who bathe in the holy tank of water.

The Sarbamangala Temple with Tarakeswar, Rameswar, Kamaleswar, Chandreswar and Mitraswar Shib Temples situated at D.N. Sarkar Road, Burdwan is an old religious institution which has been built by Maharaja Kirtichand in the year 1702 A.D. and since then the temple has become a holy place to the people of Burdwan as well as nearby Districts and States. Be it mentioned that the celebrated temple and the deity has same importance and popularity as like as Kalighat, Dakshineswar, Tarakeswar and Tarapith. Hundreds of devotees feel pride on taking the blessing of Mata Sarbamangala everyday.

Sarvamangala temple is included in the shakti peetha's of india.it is said that the navel of godess shakti fell on this place.

The idol of Mata Sarbamangala is very very old (approx. 1000 years old) from time immemorial, people felt the existence of it in old literatures and holy books. This is an idol of Mata Durga with eighteen hands and bestowed on Lion MAHISHA MARDINI and is the first NABARATNA temple in the undivided Bengal. The structure of the temple manifests the unique blending of art and architecture of Terra-cotta style and popular architecture of the then Bengal. The historians have graciously depicted the historical importance and the archaic value of the temple. The Sarbamangala Temple is main historically importance tourist place in Burdwan District.

After abolition of the Zamindari, the then Maharaja of Burdwan Sir Uday Chand Mahatab formed and constituted a trust in the year 1959 and thereby handed over the deity in favour of the Trust Board and since then the Trust Board is managing and performing the seba puja and maintaining the properties of the deity.

Sarbamangala Mata Thakurani has an old heritage in the mind of all religious minded people. From very far off place of Burdwan District people assemble here and offer seba puja and even from remote corners of West Bengal people come here to offer their pujas and obtain blessingof the Mata Sarbamangala . It has become a holy place as well as a tourist spot in this State. In the festival days the number of devotees run into lakhs. They all come from different walks of life. The Government of India has notified this temple as the place of public worship considering its historical and archaeological importance vide Notification No. 11478 dated New Delhi the 7th day of September, 2000.

Main occasion of the temple Bengali New Years day i.e. 1st Baisakh, Bipadtarini Brata, Saradiya Durgotsov, Kali Puja, Nabanna and Shib Ratri Brata etc.

Out of meagre income of Mata Thakurani and with the help of devotees and reputed business houses since 1994 the Trust Board have been trying to renovate the main temple and to give it a new look and maintaining it to proper form. Creation New Bhogghar (measuring approximate 4000 sft.) arrangement of Daily Bhog to the devotees, renovation of all Shiba temples and creation of a beautiful garden with one big fountain within the temple campus and a Nat Mandir (measuring approx. 5000 sft.) electrification / lighting, Yatri Nivas for outside devotees of the tourists for about 40 heads, drinking water, telephone toilet and car parking facility also here.

District Administration and Burdwan Municipal Authority in consultation with present popular Left Front Government have come forward to lend their hand of Co-operation for development in and around the Sarbamangala temple.

LAKE MANSAROVAR (MAPAM YUMCO)

Lake Manasarovar (Mapam Yumco) or Manasa Sarovar/Lake Manas, is a freshwater lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China 940 kilometres (580 mi) from Lhasa. To the west of Lake Manasarovar is Lake Rakshastal; toward the north is Mount Kailash.

GEOGRAPHY:-Lake Manasarovar lies at 4,590 metres (15,060 ft) above mean sea level, a relatively high elevation for a large freshwater lake on the mostly saline lake-studded Tibetan Plateau. Despite claims to the contrary, there are hundreds of higher freshwater lakes in the world, including a larger and higher freshwater lake at 4,941 metres (16,211 ft) above sea level and 495 sq km,in size, Angpa Tso (East Chihpuchang Hu), further east on the Tibetan Plateau at 33-24N 90-17E. The largest freshwater lake of its size (290 sq km) over 5000 meters elevation isPumoyong Tso (Pumuoyong Tso), also on the Tibetan Plateau, at 28-34N 90-24E and 5,018 metres (16,463 ft) elevation. Lake Manasarovar is relatively round in shape with the circumference of 88 kilometres (55 mi). Its depth reaches a maximum depth of 90 m (300 ft) and its surface area is 320 square kilometres (120 sq mi). It is connected to nearbyLake Rakshastal by the natural Ganga Chhu channel. Manasarovar is near the source of the Sutlej River which is the easternmost large tributary of the Indus. Nearby are the sources of the Brahmaputra River, the Indus River, and the Karnali River (Ghaghara), an important tributary of the Ganges River.
ETYMOLOGY:- The word "Manasarovara" originates from Sanskrit, which is a combination of the words "Manas" "sarovara" manas meaning mind and sarovara meaning lake. According to the Hindu religion, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma after which it manifested on Earth.
RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE:-

In Hinduism:- As per Hindu theology, Lake Manasa Sarovar is a personification of purity, and one who drinks water from the lake will go to the Abode of Lord Shiva after death. He is believed to be cleansed of all his sins committed over even a hundred lifetimes. Like Mount Kailash, Lake Manasa Sarovar is a place of pilgrimage, attracting religious people from India, Nepal, Tibet and the neighboring countries. Bathing in the Manasa Sarovar and drinking its water is believed to cleanse all sins. Pilgrimage tours are organized regularly, especially from India, the most famous of which is the Kailash Manasa Sarovar Yatra which takes place every year. Pilgrims come to take ceremonial baths in the cleansing waters of the lake. Manasasarovar lake has long been viewed by the pilgrims as being nearby to the sources of four of the greatest rivers of Asia, namely theBrahmaputra, Karnali, Indus and Sutlej. Thus it is an axial point which has been thronged to by pilgrims for thousands of years. The region was initially closed to pilgrims from the outside; no foreigners were allowed between 1949 and 1980. After the 1980s it has again become a part of the Indian pilgrim trail.According to the Hindu religion, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma after which it manifested on Earth. Hence, inSanskrit it is called "Manasa sarovaram", which is a combination of the words manasa (mind) and sarovaram (lake). In Buddhism:- Buddhists also associate the lake with the legendary lake known as Anavatapta in Sanskrit and Anotatta in Pali, where Queen Maya is believed to have conceived Buddha. The lake has a few monasteries on its shores, the most notable of which is the ancient Chiu Gompa Monastery built on a steep hill, looking as if it has been carved right out of the rock. The lake is very popular in Buddhist literature and associated with many teachings and stories in Buddhism. Lord Buddha, it is reported, stayed and meditated near this lake on several occasions. Buddhists say that famous Uturu-kuru divaina (island or mountain range) was nearby the Anavatapta vila. However, more evidence shows that Uturu-kuru divaina was the Kuril Islands Kuril Islands, as the Sanskrit meaning of Uturu-kuru is Northern-men as Kur meaning man, in the Ainu language. Lake Manasarovar is also the subject of the meditative Tibetan tradition, "The Jewel Tree of Tibet". A modern narration and description of the meditation was made popular by Robert Thurman.
In Jainism:- As per Jainism Kailash Mansarovar is associated with first Tirthankar Lord Shree Rishabhdev. Ashtapad mountain which is near to the Kailash mountain is a place where Lord Rishabhdevji attained Nirvana (Moksh) with crores of his disciples.

PASHUPATINATH TEMPLE,

MANDSAUR, MADHYA PRADESH

Pashupatinath Temple in Mandsaur, India is a famous Hindu temple of Lord Pashupatinath with less importance than that of mythologically sacred Pashupatinath of Kathmandu Nepal. Situated on the banks of the Shivna River, Pashupatinath Temple is one of the prominent shrines in the city of Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh. Lord Shiva in the form of Pashupatinath is the principal deity here. The highlight is a unique Shiv Ling with eight faces of Lord Shiva. The shrine has four doors in four directions.

SHIV LINGA:- The Shiv Ling in the temple is 2.5 x 3.2 metres (8' x 10.5') and weighs 4,665.525 kg (4.6 tons). It is said that the Shiv Ling emerged from the waters of the Shivna on Monday, which is considered as an auspicious day by the devotees of Lord Shiva. On Sunday, it reached the Tapeshwar Ghat of the river and was placed there. On Monday, after exactly, 21 years, 5 months and 4 days it was incarnated. The day of incarnation of the idol is celebrated as a Mela in the area surrounding the temple.
ARCHITECTURE:- The temple built on the river is 90 feet (27.6m) long, 30 feet (9.2m)wide and 101 feet (31m) tall. On top of the temple is a 100 kg (45.5 kg) gold plated pitcher. Every monsoon the water level in the Shivna river raises to touch the holy Shiv Ling of lord Shiva. This phenomenon is termed as "Jalaabhishek" which means worshiping god through water.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Nilkanth (Lord Shiva). The temple is situated at a height of 1330 meters and is located about 32 km from Rishikesh in thePauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, India.The temple is one of the most revered holy shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site. It is surrounded by dense forests and is adjacent to the mountain ranges of Nar-Narayan. It is enveloped between the valleys of Manikoot, Brahmakoot and Vishnukoot and is located at the confluence of the rivers Pankaja and Madhumati.

LEGEND:- According to Hindu mythology, the place where the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple currently stands is the sacred location where Lord Shiva consumed the poison Halahala that originated from the sea when Devas(Gods) and Asuras (Demons) churned the ocean in order to obtain Amrita. This poison that emanated during the Samudramanthan (churning of ocean) made his throat blue in color. Thus, Lord Shiva is also known as Nilkanth, literally meaning The Blue Throated One.
THE TEMPLE:- The sikhara of the temple is adorned with sculptures of various Devas and Asuras depicting the Samudramanthan. Neelkanth Mahadev in the form of Shivalinga is the presiding deity of the temple. The temple complex also has a natural spring where devotees usually take a holy bath before entering the premises of the temple. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is situated about 22 km from Swarg ashram and the trekkable road to the temple is surrounded by dense forests.
FESTIVALS:- Maha Shivaratri is the most prominent festival celebrated in the temple and lots of devotees flock to the temple during the festival. The devotees who pay a visit to Neelkanth Mahadev make an offering of Bael leaves, coconut, flowers, milk, honey, fruits and water to the Lord Shiva. The temple observes two fairs that are held annually on the occasions of Maha Shivratri (Feb-Mar) and Shivratri of Shraavana (month of Hindu calendar) (July-Aug) during which the devotees (Kawarias) trek from Haridwar to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple.The temple complex has also got one natural spring where devotees usually take a holy bath. The main shrine of the temple comprises a Shiva lingam (phallic form of Lord Shiva). The spiritual aura of the temple creates a devotional feeling in the hearts of people. People make an offering of coconut, flowers, milk, honey, fruits and water to the Lord. Subsequently, devotees get 'Parshad' of vibhuti, chandan and other things from the shrine.

Neelkanth Temple is one of the most revered holy shrines of the Hindus. Located on a hill above Swarg Ashram in Haridwar, Neelkanth Temple is easily accessible from here. According to the mythological stories, Lord Shiva drank the poison that appeared from the 'Sagar Manthan' (churning of ocean). This place is said to have been the same place, where Lord Shiva drank the poison. On drinking the poison, his throat turned blue and from that time onwards, Lord Shiva came to be known as 'Neelkantha' (One having blue throat).

Encircled by the hills of Manikoot, Vishnukoot and Brahmakoot, Neelkantha Temple is to be found at a height of 1330 meters. The way to this shrine is quite a thrilling one. The steep and narrow roads, taking above the hill, where river is flowing on one side, send chills down to the spine. Positioned at the union of Madhumati and Pankaja rivers, Neelkantha Temple is placed between the picturesque hills of Uttaranchal.

Kankaleswari kali(burdwan,west bengal):

the temple of ma kankaleswari,temple of godess kali situated near the bunk of river damodar,at kanchan nagar in burdwan.one of the oldest temple of the dist.hear godess kali is in chamunda mata form. Dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, a form of Kali, the Hindu Goddess of death & destruction, the temple is locally known as Kankal Bari ("House of the skeleton", pronounced "Kon-kol-Bari") or Rakta tola ("Temple of blood") .

Location: Kanchanpara, Bardhaman (aka Burdwan),west bengal.

Brief history: it was said that the idol of goddess kali was discovered from the bank of damodar river-bed after a devastating flood in 1923. although many accounts say the temple itself was built around the year AD 1700.

The idol of godess kali(ma chamunda): one of the most unique eg of the ancient architecture of bengal is non other than the idol of godess kankal kali.devi kali is in from of chamunda hear.the idol was engraved in a black stone in such a manner that each and every bone of the body is quite visible,hence the name kankaleswari.The idol is engraved in stone, having eight hands and garlanded with the heads of human beings. Devi holds a trident in her hand, which is supposed to hurt the male idol lying under her legs. The body of the statue is uneven. The construction of this idol may be influenced by the concept of 'tantra'

Temple and it's surroundings: The temple is decorated with different patterns of 'terra cota' which is also found in some other visiting places of Bardhaman. In the courtyard surrounding the temple are several smaller Shivalingas.The shrine is entered from three arched entrances, each of which faces one of the three rooms. The temple is topped by nine spires in tradition Bengali style of architecture. The front of the temple is profusely decorated with terracotta panels displaying sages, kings & mendicants. In one corner of the ground where the temple is siyuated, stands another small temple dedicated to Vishnu.Topped by five spires, this temple is brilliantly decorated with terracotta panels.i n both the temples, what I found worth-mentioning is that the terracotta panels ornament only the front face of the temple, the embellishments stop as soon as the front wall ends & the other three walls are simply painted over with no decorations but only very small windows breaking the continuity.

Attahas Shakti Peetha is the most famous Shakti Peetha where it is said that the "Lower Lip" of Maa Sati fell and the idols are Devi Maa as Phullara or Fullara (Blooming) and Lord Shiva as Vishwesh (Lord of the universe) Bhairav.

According to mythology, when Mahadeva (Lord Shiva) danced around with Sati's dead body cutting it to pieces, the lip fell at Fullara or Phullara. There is a big pond beside the temple. According to hearsay, Hanuman collected 108 blue lotuses from the pond when Sri Ramachandra required them for the worship of Goddess Durga.

Image of Devi and the Shiva temple is next to the Devi temple. It is a major pilgrimage and tourist attraction.The temple of Bhairav is beside the temple of Maa Fullora or Phullara. A deity made of stone. It is so large that the lower leap of the Goddess is about 15 to 18 feet wide.

BHEMAKALI TEMPLE(SARAHAN,HIMACHAL PRADESH):

Shri Bhima Kali Temple is a temple at Sarahan in Himachal Pradesh in India, dedicated to the mother goddess Bhimakali, presiding deity of the rulers of former Bushahr. State. The temple is situated about 180 km from Shimla and is one of 51 Shakti Peethass. The town Sarahan is known as the gate way of Kinnaur. Down below at a distance of 7 km from Sarahan is the River Satluj. Sarahan is identified with the then Sonitpur mentioned in Puranas

LEGENDS ABOUT BHEMAKALI:

According to a legend, the manifestation of the goddess is reported to the Daksha-Yajna incident when the ear of the Sati fell at this place and became a place of worship as a Pitha - Sthan. Presently in the form of a virgin the icon of this eternal goddess is consecrated at the top storey of the new building. Below that storey the goddess as Parvati, the daughter of Himalaya is enshrined as a divine consort of Lord Siva.

The temple complex has another three temples dedicated to Lord Raghunathji, Narsinghji and Patal Bhairva Ji (Lankra Veer) - the guardian deity.

The temple has an interesting story behind it. It is said that long ago, there were many demons in the Himalayas who were proving to be a major distraction when the priests and saints used to meditate. They all prayed to the Gods above to send a powerful force to wipe the demons off. Hearing their pleas, the Gods decided to concentrate their powers on one point. A huge explosion took place and one could see a small girl child on that spot. This girl child grew up to be the force who destroyed all demons and was supposed to take repeated births to destroy any evil force on the face of the earth. The temple is dedicated to this great female power who was called Bhimakali

HISTORY:

Sarahan was the capital of rulers of former Bushahr State. Bushahr dynasty earlier used to control the state from Kamroo. The capital of state later was shifted to Sonitpur. Later Raja Ram Singh made Rampur as the.

The temple also has interesting tit-bits that are truly intriguing. In the year 1905, a powerful earthquake struck this place and the temple tilted to one side. However, it reclined back to its original shape after another tremor jolted the place! People say that there is a secret tunnel inside the temple that was used to reach a nearby village by the priests. In the year 1927, another temple was built right next to the existing temple, which houses a 200-year-old idol of Goddess Bhimakali.

TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE AND SURROUNDINGS:

The famous Bhimakali Temple in Shimla is a very popular tourist attraction. Also known as Bheemakali Temple of Simla, this architectural wonder is one of the representatives of 51 Shakti Peeths. The unique thing about this temple is that the style of architecture used to build it is a unique amalgamation of both Hinduism and Buddhism. It is built of wood and is no less than an architectural masterpiece. Located near the temple are the palaces of the royal families of Shimla.

The Principal religious festival udyapan Jag connected with this temple and is celebrated at intervals of a hundred years or more.In 1904, the last Jag, took place 280 years after the preceding one.That time the temple treasury contributed about Rs. 30,000 /- and only a small subscription was taken from the temple. The Jag lasted six months during that time 600 goats were sacrificed and sixty Brahmans housed and fed.The Hom Ceremony (feeding the sacred fire ) lasted for 11 days and for 5 or 6 days there were an immense gatherings of people from all parts of the state.All the deities were brought in and a ground feast was given to the whole assemblage.

The fair of Navratras ( Nine auspicious nights ) are held twice in a year in Chaitra and Ashvin Hindu Months i.e.in April and October.Thesenavratras are most significant from religious point of view.During thesenavratras "Durga Saptashati" text is recited by the priest.Everyday Hundreds of pilgrims throng in at this shrine during these navratras from home and abroad.During Ashwin Navratras three days Dussehra festival is celebrated.Deities from the various parts of the erstwhile Bushahr state along with their devotees are also present on this occasion.Thousands of local people also through in at that time.Besides Krishan Janamashtmi, Budhi Dewali etc. are also celebrated with all religious fervor at the temple premises.

CHANDRANATH TEMPLE (SHAKTI PEETH),

SITAKUND, BANGLADESH

Chandranath Temple, located on top of the Chandranath hill, is a famous Shakti Peeth located near Sitakunda in Bangladesh where, as per Hindu sacred texts, the right arm of Goddess Sati fell. Sitakunda Chandranath Temple is a holy place of pilgrimage.

HISTORICAL REFERENCES:- The Rajmala states that about 800 years ago, Raja Biswambhar Sur, a descendant of the famous Adisur of Gaur, tried to reach Chandranath by sea. The Nigamkalpataru refers to the poet Jayadev living for a time in Chandranath. By the time of Dhanya Manikya, ruler of Tripura, Chandranath received numerous endowments. Dhanya Manikya attempted to remove the idol of Shiva from the temple to his kingdom but failed.
LEGEND:- Sati, was the first wife of Shiva as the first incarnation of Parvati. She was the daughter of King Daksha and Queen (the daughter of Brahma). She committed self immolation at the sacrificial fire of a yagna performed by her father Daksha as she felt seriously distraught by her father's insult of her husband and also to her by not inviting both of them for the yagna. Shiva was so grieved after hearing of the death of his wife that he danced around the world in a Tandav Nritya ("devastating penance" or dance of destruction) carrying Sati's dead body over his shoulders. Perturbed by this situation and in order to bring Shiv to a state of normalcy, it was then Vishnu who decided to used his Sudarshan Chakra (the rotating knife s carried on his finger tip). He dismembered Sati's body with the chakra into several pieces and wherever her body fell on the earth, the place was consecrated as a divine shrine oo Shakthi Peeth with deities of Sati (Parvati) and Shiva. These locations have become famous pilgrimage places as Pithas or Shakthi Pithas, and are found scattered all over the subcontinent including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, apart from India. Sati is also known as Devi or Shakthi, and with blessinggs of Vishnu she was reborn as the daughter of Himavat or Himalayas and hence named as Parvati (daughter of mountains). She was born on the 14th day of the bright half of the month of Mrigashirsha, which marks the Shivarathri(Shiva's night) festival.
