okey..
Maharishi Dadhichi was a Shiva Bhakt-which one a reason why he walked out on Dakshas Sacrifice
i also read that his spine was used in the war against the Asurs-mianly to kill Vritrasur, and hence he sacrificed his life!
in the show Shiv gives him a Vardaan that all the bones in his body will become like Vajra/Iron
but i wanted to know the real story, how did Dadhichi's spine become such a powerful weapon?

Since there always a prevails wartime between devas and asuras...
Once devas placed their weapons in Rishi Dadhichi's Ashram and requested him to safeguard it from evil hands of demons .
Rishi Dadhichi accepted the duty and keep on guarding the weapons of devas . He feel tried that his regular life is affected much by this task (since the asura's frequent check over for the weapons)and finally decided to dissolve all the weapons in a Sacred water and mixed them with that water . Then he slowly drank all the mixture ...
so his body turned in to vajra...
When the devas returned and asked for the weapons he explained the situation and his body condition ...
When they all blinked what to do ...Rishi Dadhichi selflessly jumped in to a huge fire made by him ...thus reduced in to ashes by leaving his spine The Vajra ...
This is the famous weapon of Lord Indra who defeated Vritrasur later...

Both of them are good, but content wise I found DP better, DB has many other stories too, so that can be the 2nd buy. All the puranas from Geeta Press Gorakhpur are better, they have less spelling mistakes, The one with Sanskrit shlokas & the translations are better, as it contains some useful stotras too.😊

From what I read, albeit in ACKs, Indra's Vajra was different from the weapon used to kill Vritra, of which I've read 2 accounts.

One account is that after Brihaspati & Indra had a disagreement, the former abandoned the devas, and as a result, the yagnas that the devas did became ineffective. Indra asked Brahma what to do about it, and Brahma advised him to take Trishiras, who could perform the yagnas. Indra had reservations about doing that, since Trisira's mother was an asuri wife of Twastha, and so Trisiras might have a conflict of interests. Indra turned out to be right - while the initial yagnas done by Trishiras turned out well for the devas, Trishiras had regrets about letting down his mother's people. So he now secretly propriated the gods for the well being of both devas and asuras. When indra found out about him, he beheaded him b4 further damage could be done.

When Twastha divned what had happened to his son Trishiras, he did an yagna which invoked Vritra, and Twastha instructed him to go and kill Indra. Indra then approached someone (I forget whether it was Brahma or someone else) who suggested that since Vritra was a creation of Twastha, the only way to kill him was w/ a weapon created from the bones of Dadhichi, whose tapas matched that of Twastha. Dadichi gladly gave up his life by meditation, when asked, and from his bones was created a gada/mace, which Indra used to slay Vritra.

According to another story, Indra killed Trishiras w/ his vajra - a lightning bolt - while he was meditating, while Vritra was killed by foam which Vishnu entered. In this version, Indra befriended Vritra, who put conditions that Indra couldn't kill him either in day or night, w/ any weapon wet or dry. On a twilight evening, Indra got some foam, had Vishnu enter it, and killed Vritra that way. To atone for the killings of Trishiras and Vritra, he retired from the kingdom and did an Ashwamedha yagna, and that was the time Sachi was tormented by Nahusha.

One thing that bothers me is when they show the Vajra as a skeleton built weapon (both in ASR and DBSK), which it was not. The Vajra was a plain & simple thunderbolt in the shape of lightning. Dadichi's bones were only used to make a gada used to kill Vritra, which didn't happen to be the Vajra.

I have read at many places, Vajra was made from Dadhichi's bones, he gave up his life in meditation. That's why after killing Vritasur, Indra could perform his duties properly because of this sin of Brhma-hatya he got by Dadhichi's death. He performed a yagya forprayaschitt of the sin, yet he was not successful. Then Devatas made Nahusha, Indra till he fell for Shachi, Indra's wife & was cursed by one of the Sapta-rishis.

^^^^ The Brahmhatya that Indra got was for killing Trishiras, not Dadhichi. Dadichi voluntarily gave up his life, and the devas only took the bones from his body after he was done, so no sin was involved here. The Trishiras sin remained, though, and it was for that sin that Indra performed the Ashwamedha yagna b4 doing what he had to to rescue Sachi from Nahusha.

In fact, Indra was one of the examples mentioned in the Ramayan by either Rama or Lakshman when they made the decision to perform an Ashwamedha Yagna, partly, for among other reasons, to atone for Brahmhatya of killing Ravana. The Nahusha story, OTOH, appears in the Mahabharata, where Shalya narrates it to the Pandavas after telling them how he was tricked into joining the Kauravas.

^^^ It was this sin only which made Nahusha, Indra till he was cursed & lost the kingdom of Swarga.

See Here Devatas had asked him to give his body. Afterwords when Dadhichi's wife came to know about this incident, she had cursed Devatas for this. While fighting with Indra Vritrasur had taunted him for using bones of a Brahmin.
Various puranas gives different version of this story, but the commen factor is Vajra was made using Dadhichi's bones.
