Chapter 3 - Letters part one,
8 years earlier
They walked away from the setting sun, their fingers almost touching yet they weren't holding hands, the girl with her soft brown curls kissing her face and dancing in the breeze behind her, her eyes twinkling and her cheeks rosy, the boy on the other hand was taller, his messy hair touching his forehead, Both in their early teens, both so happy with the way of life.
"I'll miss Mini so much" Manyata said after a moment.
"You won't miss me?" Uday asked a little disappointed.
"No" Manyata said confidently. "You'll write to me won't you?"
"I won't" Uday said solemnly. "I'll find another doll once I reach there"
His tone was so genuine that Manyata believed him. She walked away briskly.
"Hey doll wait" He called out running behind her as she broke in to a run.
The path twisted and turned around the lake they stood by moments ago leading them to the shadowy shade of trees that stood on the both sides of the road framing the lake, they used to come here, every time Uday visited them for summer holidays and this may be the last time they do so. He was faster and he caught her just then.
He grabbed her shoulder and turned her around, around to face him, he was taken aback to see those wide brown eyes filled with tears, she was crying.
"Dolls don't cry" He said wiping off her tears.
"I'm not a doll!" She kicked her feet on the ground as she pushed his fingers away. "Don't you dare call me doll again!"
She turned away again wiping her tears herself.
"First mama left me, then papa and now my sister and my best friend both are leaving me"
She mumbled after a moment.
"So why don't you join us?" Uday mouthed the question he had for months now. Manyata was the best; she was the topper, so why wasn't she coming?
"Nani sahib doesn't want me to" She said slowly.
"Is she angry with you yet?" He asked with a guilty voice. "Didn't you tell her that it was me who put the'"
"It's not that" Manyata cut in. "She doesn't love me"
"Cause she does, she's the best nani!"
"I know" Manyata sighed. "That's why I want to do everything she says"
"But you should come" Uday said stubbornly.
"I can't'" Her voice shattered. "Although I'll love to"
Uday watched her with a strange expression for a moment.
"I'll tell you everything about life there" He promised. "I'll write to you everyday if you want me to"
His hand grasped hers and pulled her closer.
"I'll miss you doll" He muttered in her ear.
With that his still childish lips touched her cheek softly. His heart skipped a beat as he did so, he had never kissed a girl except for Unnati and his heart never skipped when he kissed her. She looked up at his face wide eyed, and found her surprise reflected there. Blood rushed in to her cheeks with no proper reason making them rosier, she had never been kissed before,
The wind hummed around them as both looked at each other feeling equally surprised and confused.
**
"Manyata" Mirnalini devi said looking at the sealed letter in her hand. "You've got a letter from Uday"
Her eyes gleamed when nani sahib uttered those words.
"Can I reply just for this once?" She asked hopefully.
"No" The answer was short and curt.
"But..nani sahib..he's writing because'"
"I'm not interested at why exactly he's wasting his precious time and my decision stands"
"But it's'"
"No means no Manyata" Mirnalini devi cut in, "And I think telling you once is enough"
"But I won't be writing again'just let me..."
"Go away" Mirnalini devi snapped. "I've changed my mind'you won't be reading this" She shut away the letter in her drawer and looked up at the girl who was still standing there. "Didn't you hear what I said?"
"Nani sahib" Manyata continued tears creeping in to her eyes. "Please"
"Leave"
She walked away, more than that her feet dragged her away as her heart protested, there was a letter, he was still writing to her. She should read it, yet she couldn't. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't realize it until she knocked in to Jay.
"Ouch what the'" She looked up from her phone. "Di where's the funeral?" she added seeing the look on Manyata's face.
Manyata shook her head.
"Nowhere"
She sat in the stair case looking so glum and Jay sat next to her looking confused.
"Has your results arrived?" She asked trying to work out something. Manyata shook her head again. "No I think not you'll be the best there's no reason to look half dead'so what's it? Has Vijay bhai put cockroaches in your bead again?"
Manyata smiled.
"It wasn't Vijay Bhai it was Uday and that too years ago no one had dared to put anything in my bed since then"
"No" Jay agreed. "After seeing what you did to Vijay bhai I don't think even Uday will be that brave ever again"
Manyata sighed.
"So what's it di? Is nani sahib angry with you?" She asked again. "No" She answered herself. "She's always angry with you, what's it di tell me na" She was desperate to know that now her phone lay forgotten.
"I'll tell you" Vijay bhai joined them. "She got a letter from Uday" He sat in the stair case on the other side of Manyata.
"How did you know?" Jay asked him.
"I received one from Mini, myself; she won't be coming this summer"
"So what's it M bhai? Has Uday found a girl friend or something?"
"I don't know"
Both turned to look at her.
"Nani sahib won't let me read it"
"What?"
Manyata said nothing.
"Where's this letter now?" Vijay bhai asked after a moment.
"I don't want you to steal it" Manyata said.
"No no M bhai I won't" Vijay promised. "Your nani sahib will hand it over to me herself..is it alright then?"
Manyata sighed.
"I suppose so" She said after a moment and Jay shook her hand with Vijay.
"So the mission begins!"
**
A heap of files hit the ground and a cloud of dust emerged from it. The lady who had just entered to what she thought was her office and now looked like a crime location raised her eye brows.
"Vijandra Singh what are you doing?" She asked doubt fully.
Vijay blinked at her innocently.
"I'm fulfilling my duty for my country nani sahib" His voice was proud.
"What?"
Another heap of files went to the ground.
"Could you please explain how will ruining my study help your country?"
"I'm checking for letter bombs" The answer was short.
"Checking for what?"
"Oh nani sahib!" Vijay smacked his forehead. "I can't waste my time talking nonsense with you! What if in that time a letter bomb explodes? We'll both die!!"
"Alright!" Mirnalini devi sighed. She had realized that this boy was near to crack up so it was easy to do whatever he needs without further questions. "What do you want me to do?"
"Hand over all the letters that reached the palace today"
"Why? Ah of cause to check for letter bombs" Muttering to herself she grabbed a pile of letters from the nearest file. "Here you go'" She handed them to Vijay.
"Ah" Vijay said starting to sniff. "I can smell a letter bomb just below here" He pulled open the drawer. "There it is" He said grabbing the letter that lay on the top of other documents on the drawer.
"Wish you a good day Nani sahib" He said vanishing.
"Vijendra Singh wait! Wait a munite!" Mirnalini devi called after him, but he was nowhere to listen.

Dear doll,
Manyata are you there or am I writing to a wrong address? You haven't replied for years now, even you forgot to wish me, I thought maybe this year you'll remember it's my birthday but you didn't, have you forgotten me? Or are you trying to? But still here I am writing again as a fool, what can I do, a royal's promise is unbreakable, hope you'll reply this time.
It's raining here and I remembered what you said once, that it's the sky crying'wonder why it's crying now, there's a strange whisper in every one of its drops, like it's calling me out. Have you ever hear it calling you? Maybe I'm going mad, there isn't much saying as the last few papers were enough to drive me crazy.
Wish you were here, we would've helped each other out from the disaster called exams, but yet Unnati told me you're doing well I'm glad. Our library was closed for two weeks, now that's good news for me, don't frown, you don't know how haunted it is in there.
We won another game last night and now we're on lead, soon the cup will have our names on it. I like to keep plying because kicking that damn ball (Sorry) helps me to keep my mind off from things. On the other times I keep wondering why you aren't replying, honestly Manyata are you alright? Mini said you are but I won't believe it until you say so yourself, please reply this time you're getting on my nerves girl!
I'm going out tonight, to celebrate my birthday with my friends, yes a few girls will be joining us too(don't roll your eyes at me) yeah right, there're more girls than boys, sometimes I wonder why they think that they're so important? Is it a common disease that every girl seems to suffer from? No complains though.
If you're writing to Mini (Don't you dare if you're not writing to me) Ask her what's up with her. I personally think she's losing it. Guess what she keeps staring at me wherever I go, can't get rid of her these days. (I've got to find some Mini-repelling lotion to put on before the prom night.)
Almost forgot to tell you, the prom night's approaching and we've got to invite someone, to tell you the truth I don't want to accompany some fashion house that keep staring at me like I'm from Neptune but what to do, they're all the same'this is what you call bad luck.
Did I mention our science teacher's going out with our mathematics teacher? I told you they're the last time I wrote but nobody here believed me, but now you see I was right can you believe it? Honestly science mam needs to get her eyes tested, and if she doesn't her bf surely needs a wig. Can't complain as my mum also decided to marry a bold man, but you see dad had his hair all over his head then and this case is different. Even if he uses a wig he'll be (Nothing personal just stating the fact) a pig in a wig.
Our history teacher has a history too, I just discovered that. Better save it for the next letter as I've got something more important to tell you.
Do you know what I hate dad I just hate him!! He doesn't want me to come home, now that the school is finishing he's making other plans to keep me trapped here, can you plan something that would shut him up for a few months so that I can come home? Or should I tell Vijay and Unnati to spy on him as I strongly suspect he's up to something.
There's One more thing that I can't wait to tell you, the girl Jagat keeps talking about in his sleep is Jay!! I know you can't believe it but it's true. I think they met the last time Jay came here to visit Mini why didn't you come then? (No complains again, as I don't know how many will start to talk in their sleep if you did) But even then at last you would've seen how everything here is and we would've met. (Do I sound desperate to meet you?)
There was a cockroach in my drawer, then I realized how shocking it is to see them dancing over your belongings, I'm truly sorry for what I did, now.
And finally, don't think I'm threatening but if you don't reply this time, I won't write to you ever again!!
Miss you,
Uday
PS: I know that was an empty threat yet felt so good while doing it, will write again soon.
"Thanks Vijay bhai" Manyata said folding the letter.
"Never fear when Vijay is here" Vijay said making a face now what are you going to do?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well mam once nani sahib finds out what I took from her drawer she won't be so nice now will she?"
Jay laughed in response while Manyata's face whitened.
"She won't do anything" She said slowly. "As I'm not replying to this one either"
*
A year earlier
"Manyata" Mini said in the top of her voice. She was waving a piece of paper in front of her eyes as Manyata opened her eyes. She rubbed her eyes as she sat up.
"Why are you shouting in the early morning Mini?"
"Guess what?"
Manyata raised her eyebrows. "What" She asked sleepily.
"Uday's back!"
"What??"
"Yeah" Mini nodded. "Unnati told me he came home last night"
Manyata's face fell.
"He didn't even tell me he's coming" She mumbled.
"Yeah well I think he's busy with all his girl friends"
"Right"
Manyata said getting up.
"And he's coming here!" Mini said excitedly.
"I can't see why you're getting so excited" Manyata said uninterestedly.
She left the room shutting the door behind her.
"Good morning dai sa" She grinned at the old lady as she entered the kitchen. "How may I help you today?"
The old lady returned the smile. She always pitied the girl who in spite of being a princess was treated and addressed as a servant here. She truly loved her innocent and lovely self too.
"See to the salad dear" she said brightly, "You look so happy today" She added.
"I am" Manyata grinned. And she wondered herself. Why was she so happy suddenly, true it had nothing to do with the sunny weather, the freshness in the morning air, or the fact that she had nothing much to do for the breakfast, there was only one possible reason and that seemed no reason at all: Uday was coming! He was coming here!
True he wasn't writing to her anymore, but she couldn't complain as she didn't reply to any of those letters, yet she wanted to see him, and that was the reason making her so happy; not that she's going to admit it.
"Rajmata's calling you" That message was for her, she rushed in to her office.
"What is it nani sahib?"
"I want you to visit Menaka" her response was calm yet it irritated her.
"What?"
"She needs your help, there's a party there tonight"
"But nani sahib I'"
"Why" She raised her eye brows. "Have you made any other arrangements?"
"No nani sahib'but"
"Then you will go when I say so"
"All..ri..ght" She stammered. She left the palace in few second so lost in her thoughts that she didn't realized she had just seen Unnati entering.
"UNNATI!!" Mini said. She hugged her. "Where's Uday?"
"Oh Mini!" Unnati said hugging her back. "Dada left straight to the party, he said he'll see you at Vijay's"
"Oh no" Mini said disappointed.
"Don't worry dear I'm here to take you" Unnati said consoling her.

Chapter 3 -letters part 2
She walked on with no purpose in mind, thinking how unlucky she was, he was visiting them and she wasn't there to see him. And the party, the one she was going to help with, she knew why they were throwing it, it was Vijay bhai getting married soon'
The beach was deserted as though people have been alerted about an upcoming tsunami; she was one of the few who listened to the soft whisper of waves today. She sat there letting the smiling waves to kiss her ankles and watching the little rainbows they made in her anklets. It was like the water was washing away her pain, making her smile again, yet the storm inside her heart was the same.
She had no mind to leave them and let her feet drag her to Vijay's house, she had more time left, the party wasn't happening till tonight.
His eyes fell on the whitish waves that kept coming and going, he was here once again, but the others did not recognize him. He felt isolated and betrayed; maybe that was the first step of royalty.
"You won't write to her again!" It was his father's tone of authority.
He looked up at him trying to recognize some reason in his eyes, yet they were blank from emotions as they always were.
"But'she's my friend"
Giriraj grabbed his shoulders making the boy look in to his eyes.
"You are a prince" He said pressing on every word he uttered. "And a prince doesn't have friends he has followers"
"But'"
"You have a heart doesn't mean that you shouldn't use your brain son, and it seems to me that you're forgetting it"
His tone was harsh,
"This girl'" He continued. "She has no place in your future, none at all" He opened his mouth to argue yet seeing the look in his father's face he thought better not to.
"Don't forget that you made a commitment all those years ago, and a royal's word is unbreakable"
"But'"
"I can see it Uday'I can see it that you're in love," His laugh was cruel, "Can you see how silly it sounds, a prince a crowned prince running behind a mirage, a teenage crush thinking and dreaming about a girl who's nothing, nothing compared to him, about a girl who he hadn't seen for years now"
"Then dad" He said finally. "You may also see that I can't ever love Mini the way you want me to" He looked out of the window seeing nothing in his rage, it was his eighteenth birthday, and his father was giving him a life time surprise.
Giriraj shook his head laughing at his son's stupidity.
"I don't want you to" He said. "She's your future either way; she's the queen who'll rule alongside you, accept it son, accept the truth!"
He said nothing for a moment and his father ended the conversation,
"And don't make promises that you can't keep in future" Their eyes met for a moment. "Keep writing if you want to break her heart"
His thread of thoughts was broken by the high pitched shriek,
"What the'?" He said jerking his head.
"That's exactly what I'm asking what the hell?"
Taking a deep breath he looked at the figure who was shouting at him, trying to figure out what was wrong, and that was the worst decision in his life.
She was a girl, a girl in her early twenties, a girl dressed in a simple white Anarkali suit, honestly she wasn't the most beautiful he had seen, yet there was something, something that made him catch his breath. Her hair danced in the breeze highlighting their brown and golden shades as she shrieked at him. Trying to pull himself together he tried to listen to exactly what she was saying.
"You can find pebbles here doesn't mean you can hit anyone with them"
He gasped at her. Yes he was throwing them, but definitely not at her.
"Hey I was'"
"I know what you were trying to do" She said still in the top of her voice that made the pass-by people stare at them.
"Can you please put you voice down" He asked calmly though it was very hard thing to do at the moment.
"Oh why should I? You weren't so polite while hitting me with those pebbles"
"Listen'"
"I will not listen, what do you think that we are entertainment for the wealthy society who do so many favors for us? That you can do whatever you please? Can't you even say sorry?"
Her angry at this point was for something totally different, yet he was the one who had to suffer, true he was going to apology but her speech made up his mind. He grabbed her shoulders.
"Shhh" He said bending his face so that his nose almost touched hers.
Her eyes widened at his touch and he looked in to those familiar brown depths, feeling her heart beat rise,
"Do you even know" He said slowly observing the effect his eyes were having on her. "What being an entertainment for the wealthy society means?"
She blinked shielding her eyes from his gaze, preventing him from reading her thoughts, and her cheeks turned even rosier,
"Do you want it to be taught?"
She jerked herself away from his hold, scratching his arm in the process, without a single backward glance she ran, gathering speed as she did, he watched her for a while completely forgotten why he was here.
**
"What happened M bhai?" Vijay raised his eyebrows at her. "Did you run all the way from home?"
She shook her head panting, her mind still numb.
"What happened then?" He asked again. "You look like a ghost escorted you here"
"Yeah" She said gasping for breath. "Something like that"
"Well" Vijay bhai said disappointed. "You'll tell me one of those days"
"What do you mean?"
"Well today's the engagement" Vijay bhai said smirking, "There're many occasions left"
She gasped at him.
"You didn't tell me you were getting engaged today"
"Huh" Vijay made a sound. "Do the unfortunate mean getting engaged ever tell you that it's their last day on happy earth?"
"Manyata" It was Menaka's voice Manyata excused herself and went to see what she wants.
"Please help me" Her voice was begging.
"What is it aunty?"
Menaka sighed thinking of everything that has to be done before the evening and said,
"Can you decorate the swimming pool?"
"Why?"
"Because" It was Vijay bhai who answered her question. "I'm getting engaged there you silly"
"No" Menaka said standing up from the sofa she was sitting on. "You've got an eye for those things."
"Please" Vijay bhai made a puppy face. "Make it as scary as possible, so that she would run away the moment she reaches there!"
Menaka raised her eyebrows at him. "No mum I didn't mean that!"
**
The swimming pool was an enclosed area that was alighted by tiny blue lights that made dancing reflections on the pool water. Manyata sighed looking at the wide undecorated area thinking of all the work to be done.
"Bring more roses" She told the maid who was helping her. "White ones" She was decorating the huge pillars that framed the pool, climbing on to a stool and holing in to the bars of the staircase that highlighted the entrance.
"Is this enough?" The maid asked from above. She stretched out to look at her. "No" She said. "Bring more"
"This much?"
She stretched out again; she couldn't see where the maid was, her feet completely left the stool and she was clutching to the bar for dear life.
"Be careful doll" A voice said below her, and for some reason it made a let go of the bar, she closed her eyes sensing the fall, soon she'll hit the water.
He caught her just in time, one of his hands grasping her wrist and the other encircled around her waist, she had her eyes closed, and he watched her white face in wonder. He thought this was the first time he was seeing her, but no, she was that girl from the beach, he laughed inside his head, even she had failed to recognize him.
Slowly, she opened her eyes, and it shocked her.
"How dare you!" She said. "To call me doll"
It took a millisecond for him to analyze what she said.
"I'm.."
"I know who you are!" She snapped. "And I know exactly what you're up to!"
"Oh really?" He asked her.
"Let me go!"
"Are you sure?" She failed to notice the mischievous tone in his voice.
"I said let go of my hand"
"As you wish" He said shortly, doing what she said,
"NO!" She screamed as she slipped off in to the water,
There was a sound of splash, and Uday laughed.
"What no?" He asked in an innocent tone. "You told me to let go didn't you?"
Manyata said nothing; she was trying to get out.
"Here" He said stretching out his hand for her. "Come on"
She wasn't willing to let him help but she had to give up, he dragged her out. Standing there in her soaked cloths she made quite a sight, he wanted to laugh his head off at her just a moment before, but then he noticed how her eyes filled slowly with tears.
She turned around trying to cover herself feeling self-conscious, and fighting her tears. He reached out for her and she shivered at his touch, this wasn't funny at all. He bit his lip cursing himself for making her cry and wrapped her in his jacket,
He made her face him,
"Dolls don't cry" He said wiping away those tears that escaped her eyes. She looked at him wide eyed and he smiled. "You failed to recognize me doll"
"I don't know you" She said slowly.
"I'm.." He started in a surprised tone.
"My best friend would've never done such a thing with me" She made her meaning clear.
"It was just'"
"Just what? A joke? A prank? Do you really find it funny?"
"Look doll I.."
"Yeah right" She said blinking away her tears. "I am a doll with no feelings, right"
"Listen.."
"You didn't even remember there was a girl who used to wait for your letters for past two years yuvraj sa and don't tell me you care about my feelings!"
She caught him by surprise.
"You used to wait for my letters?"
He asked her and she looked away.
"Then why didn't you reply?"
"Because'" She gulped. "Forget it," She said trying to make herself free, but his hold got tighter as she tried.
"Because what?"
He shook her so that her bangles ringed clanging with each other.
"Let me go"
"I won't until you tell me the truth"
She took a deep breath and looked in to his eyes.
"Because a girl with no existence can't dream of a prince"
