Of course there's no harm in having these animals as pets. They can be potentially dangerous but as you say if the owner has sufficient experience in handling such animals then I dont think there's a problem. Secondly, as long as the animal is kept within the owner's private property and not let loose on the streets then people need not feel unsafe.

Moreover, it's not the only dangerous thing in this world. People keep ferocious dogs as a means of protection. Well accidents may happen, but accidents can also happen with electric fences or such things. So, if the owner has taken necessary precautions and has necessary facilities, where's the problem??

haha yea rite... even when they are kept witin the property, it still isnt safe... what about those defenseless little childern playing in the house? how will they be kept safe?

Souro, problem is when the natural instinct of such dangerous animals are triggered due to surroundings, no matter how much care is taken. Infact not for others they can be harmfull to thier owners. To the first one just want to say potential danger, danger alrigh...risky and take risk for what? personal liking? I will say yes sure, why not? but ..😊 like both 1st and 2nd point raised here.

@Manny: But the children are also the responsibility of the owner. Moreover, as Raj said the dog is kept on a leash and outside of the main building.

@Raj: Yes even potential danger should be viewed as danger. But then as I said, it's not the only potential danger that exists. Electric fences, firearms, traps, etc. are also potential dangers that people keep in the name of security. Moreover, you've said that only people with sufficient experience are allowed to keep those pets. Then obviously the level of danger decreases even further.

Laws prohibiting pit bulls are the biggest load of crap. People who fear certain dog breeds need to volunteer at a shelter or study dog behavior and breeds to truly understand dogs.

Pit Bulls, Rottweillers, Bull Mastiffs and many other dog breeds are definitely the most misunderstood and mistreated dogs. There is no such thing as a bad dog, but there are bad humans. Just like a good parent raises good children, bad parents raise bad children; a good dog owner will be able to raise any breed appropriately while bad dog owners will fail. Even miniature pinschers, daschunds, jack russels and chihuahas can be deadly in the wrong hands.

Dogs do not attack without reason, they usually attack only when provoked or threatened. A barking dog, jumping, excited dog does not necesscarily mean vicious. A lot of dogs jump and bark at passers simply because they get excited and curious about passers by. Reacting with fear, running, being fidgety and shifty are behaviors that actually trigger a docile dog into attack mode due to the negative reaction conveyed to them.

Most dog bites occur because of a few reasons.
1) Owner trained dog to be vicious or abused them leading to viciousness. A lot of pit bulls are used in illegal dog fight rings or raised to be gang bully dogs making them vicious.
2) Owner did not train dog properly. A mother dog teaches her kids the difference between play nips, warning nips and aggressive bites. Play nip is when a dog nips affectionately at another in play. Warning nip is when a dog nips another to warn things like 'I dont want to play' 'Go away' etc. Agressive bite is when a dog is actually attacking. Dogs weaned away from their moms when young need the owner to train the dog in gentleness of nips. A significant amount of dog bites were meant to be play nips or warning nips but the untrained dog clamped down too hard.
3) Miscommunication. People often provoke dogs by sudden movements, over reacting in fear and suspiscion, unwittingly invading their comfort zone, unwitting threatening their safety, unwittingly threatening what the dog is protecting. What do we do when our safety is threatened? Fight or Flight! Dogs to the same and they fight by biting. Before assuming that the dog is dangerous try to understand why the bit. There are dogs that will attack strangers if they come too close to the family child, enter rooms without supervision etc. Always ask people before petting their dog. If you are not a dog person with no clue about dog behavior then make sure you consult with the owner while moving about their house.

Finally there are dogs that are genuinely aggressive due to neurological all psychological reasons either by birth or poor ownership and treatment. These dogs must be put down. Similar rules apply to all kinds of pets, cats, ferrets, rodents, they all have their species behavior and less than 1% are genuinely a threat.

I am against dangerous pets. However, I am against breed biases and blaming animals for people's mistakes. I would say human beings are more dangerous than dogs. Human beings kill, rape, beat up, abuse, traumatize humans as well as all other species more in a minute than all dogs put together for a year. Choice between a pit bull and human, I would pick pit bull instead of an self serving ungrateful obnoxious brute.

I think certain pets like Pit Bulls, Rottweillers are dangerous breeds but sometimes I feel it's also your luck... cos in some cases an affectionate dog too can harm you 😕

For example... we had a dog (Bichon Frise)for 12 yrs... really loving, was in a bad mood one day... my mom wanted him to eat, he was sleeping she kept calling him and he did not buzz from the bed... so she went upto him and started getting him off the bed...he charged at her and bit off her right side of the face gosh it was really bad.... when we went to the hospital she had to get stitches...at first they thought it was a case of domestic violence 😕 and demanded to see the dogs vaccination card, then they got the X-ray done and they were surprised that a Bichon Frise which is actually calm did that to her... well after that incident I felt pets too need their own space and you really can't predict what might happen. After this incident we had a Rottweiller 😳 she was so adorable.. sadly she died due to a liver infection...and now we have a Collie 😛

I love animals a lot had many of them cats, dogs, turtles, rabbits, chickens 😆 and fish also...but after this incident I'm more careful I would always ask if a dog bites before I pat it... 😆 😳

Anshu I loved your story about Pitbull & climbing nearest tree to save your butt if he came close to u 😆 .

RTH you have made some excellent points and agree with on most of what you have written. Connie you have made some good points too.

One can say Pitbulls, ROttwilers or Mastiffs are dangerous dogs but who would think Golden Retriever would attack someone? GR are supposed to be family dogs.

9 yrs ago I was attacked by my neighbor's 95 Lb Golden Retriever for no odd reason. Dog was on a leash in owners hands. Apparently he was ignored by his owners by leaving him home alone and not much attention. Owners were travelling alot so he was in the yard most of the time rain or shine.

While we had just bought new beagle and were extremely loving to him and spending good quality time with our pooch in training him.

That triggered him to attack me on my face. Knocking my front tooth, his teeth punctured both my lips and he scratched my neck. I hit the pavement. I lost so much blood & face was black and blue. This all happened so quick and right on my street. I was basically coming back from my walk and my neighbor stopped me to talk to me abt his dog coming in my yard or not. Dog just jumped out of his owners hands and on my face without any provocation.

Emergency doctor is questioning me & my hubby abt domestic violence . Go figure 😕

We have had some dogs, turtles, Fish, corn snake, Cockteil as pets in our 35 yrs living in USA. Now we have new addition of Mini Schnauzer to the family 😃 .

RTH is right there are no bad dogs or good dogs. It all depends on the person who is the master and how they are being trained-raised.

Dogs sense all human emotions like tension, someone being nervous around them which really makes them uneasy. I dont pet or feed anyone's dog unless I ask the owner's permission. There are right ways of raising pets and there are wrong ways. Pet animals have to be treated like pet animals and not like human beings.

I used to be so scared of dogs but thanks to Mr. Petlover-DB he has opened my heart in loving animals 😳 😃
