Mayawati celebrated her birthday in style today. Predictably the opposition parties started attacking her for cutting a cake and accepting expensive presents. Their argument was that none of the other politicians celebrate their birthdays in such a lavish style, nor do they cut cakes or accept expensive gifts. Sahara Samay's Parsoon Bajpai invited a few of these politicians to debate this issue.

The point that they were arguing about was why did Mayawati cut a cake! Her supporters responded, it was her birthday and what was she supposed to cut a samosa or a roti? The arguments that followed were bizarre.

Anyway the one point that hit me hard was when one of the Dalit leader said, why do the upper castes take objection to such a simple pleasures enjoyed by the Dalits? He added that the Dalits even have problems if they ride a ghodi to their own wedding, because that is not what they are allowed to do by the upper castes.

Is this true? The Dalits are Hindus after all so why can't they celebrate their happy occasions like all the other Hindus do? No wonder they are converting to other more tolerant religions. After today I am ashamed to call myself a Brahmin.

The whole agenda for Mayawati and her party is casteism, infact they are most benefitted by it, am not supporting casteism but didn't they expected such reaction. Am sure they did and will make a political scene for thier own gain. Anyways I don't think its anything to do with a dalit celebrating, it's about spending crore's on a BD party, wherein thoses funds could have better used in upliftment of poor. Have they not heard of "setting an example" ... Wouldn't this sound better - Mayawati cancelled her BD celebrations. Lakh's budgetted for celebrations and gift money was used to open better sanitation facilities in xyz place. 😊

"You have a valid point here, however the CM's and PM's all celebrate their birthdays by cutting cake. Sonia and Pawar have done it in style always. So what was the big issue with Mayawati doing the same?

I had no idea that the celebration was funded from the State's coffers. If that is correct then the whole shindig sucks, but even so the whole arguement on TV was the "cake." Looks like we are all witness to a Desi version of Gulliver's Travels."
