This is a speech I wrote, which I'm supposed to read in class. it's a speech on something that concerns me or makes me mad...

a question to think about, after reading the speech.... Should School be delayed one hour because of students getting 1 extra hour of sleep? There are few debatable points in this speech, as in Screwing up Bus schedules, and other stuff....

so read it, and answer the question:

Sleep, a major factor in ones ability to achieve academic excellence. Without enough sleep, a child is guaranteed to do much less than his/her true potential in school. The time High School starts today confines students to get enough sleep. This limit of sleep will, through a long chain-reaction, will cause an immense downfall on the child's future. This issue is brought forth principally to parents and teachers that school must be delayed one hour, should start one hour late.

School these days start around 7:55 Am, the time the student has to be in school. To arrive at school at this time, a child must wake up from 6 to 6:30 AM. And sometimes to catch the bus, a teen may even have to wake up at 5:30. According to scientists, an average person must receive 9 hours of sleep to be refreshed and focused. 9 hours before 6:15 [approximate time] is 9:15 PM, so to have 9 hours of sleep, a child must be asleep by 9:15 PM. An average teenager goes to bed around 10:00 PM, due to sports, work, and/or homework. This gives the child only 7 or 8 hours of sleep, with is sometimes enough. The child then remains tired throughout the day, and if this is a daily problem, the child's future may be at risk. The child will lose focus constantly in classes, and, if on test days, do horrible on tests, bringing their grades down. This would be a sign for the teachers to call the parent's of the child, and the parent's discipline the child by making him/her study more, decreasing the child's free time, sometimes sleep. The child may also be too tired to go to the signed-up after-school activities, eventually get him kicked out. Insufficient sleep will guarantee the child to be bushed in sports, and constant mistakes will get him off the team. Constant loss of focus in school and sports will be ghastly when applying to colleges. This limits the colleges the child can apply to. Sometimes, the colleges the child can apply to may not be of the child's interest, neither will it provide the courses required for the child's career. Lack of sleep can cause a long chain-reaction, destroying the future of a child.

There is a solution however to such sleep problems. A possible solution, may be the best the solution, is to delay the time school starts by one hour. Start school at 8:55 AM rather than 7:55 AM. Kids, this way will get in more sleep then they usually would, one hour more. This one-hour of sleep can turn in to 5 hours more per week, 20 hours more per month, and a massive 180 hours more per school year. This sleep will be enough for the child to be refreshed, and have enough energy to get passed the rough school day, also maybe any sports they are in, even work. This small number can, not only show growth in sleep time, but also increase in the number grade on their daily tests and quizzes. These hours can add up, further improving the child's score in quizzes, giving them better opportunities. These hours can send the child to their desired college, and work in a field of their desired career. Like they say, "small things add up". There are more problems as well, such as delaying school by 1 hour, also delays the dismissal time by 1 hour, which disorganizes the bus schedule, club meetings, sport meets, etc. Well, if a child wasn't energized enough to be involved completely in these activities, then what's the point of having them? Wouldn't it be just a waste of money hosting events that the kids won't have the energy to go to them? Would there be a point of having a club advisor just sitting and explaining things to kids who are half asleep? This would be like having a super bowl, with players dragging themselves to the field. There wouldn't be any point to any activity if no one is mentally interested.

Kids should get enough sleep first, and then he/she will excel in classes. They will do much better. They will be more mentally fit for clubs. They will be more mentally and physically fit for school sports. They will have a brighter future. They will have a chance of accomplishing their life goals. They will be able to do anything, all they need is a little more sleep, and the future of the world will forever change.

All I can debate here is for, from ages its been told that in early mornings body/mind is fresh, not sure of scientific proof but considered to be good habit, stuctures the whole day's schedule efficiently. Reason, from schools to business have been worked around to accomodate this.

Only solution to get 9 hours sleep is to sleep early 😊. I know of people who are at wok at 5-6AM and leave by 3 - 4PM, to spend almost half day at home.

Another challenge is decision maker in this case are 40 plus who biologically need less sleep and will never agree on late school timing.

nice speech but i have been advising to wake up early 😉 havent you been doing that 😆 😆 😆

as a matter of fact if the time is delayed, then people will ask for one more hour(does that ring any bell? 😉 ) and the story goes on and on. how about going to bed one hour early? 😆 😆 😆

No, I don't think school should be delayed an hour. There should be some discipline. At some point in life you have to get used to the whole early to bed & early to rise thing. And if you are in university/college, then only three to four hours is sufficient.

I agree with Raj and Andekhi.

Children concerned about their own future ( & their folks) must work way around to judicially manage the available time for sleep. Starting school 1 hours later also means coming home an hour later and everything getting postponed including bed time 😳 .. in the end, the sleep hours will remain the same!
i see how hard it must be for children today with all these alluring factors such as late night TV, PSP & similar, Internet etc! but it won't be impossible to discipline oneself ..

Solution: siesta. Take a nap in the afternoon to make up for the daily 9 hour sleep requirement. 😃

I prefer change in school timings based on seasons. We had it in our school. In winter, it started at 9 and in Summer at 7.

What I would like is, the kids shouldn't sign up for all the activities under sun and only choose the ones which they can devote the time to and interested in.

There is no fixed time for sleep for any age group so for teens even 7-8 hours sleep is fine and for some 9 hours is needed. Instead of wasting time watching TV shows and being on internet, it is better to go to sleep exactly at 9, 9:30 or 10 PM depending on the sleep time required and get up by 5-5:30 am. That is where parents need to step in. There should be stringent rules for TV/Internet access on school days.
