Drunk driving campaign cuts road deaths in july by half

Posted On Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Deeptiman Tiwary and Rashmi Rajput

If you had any doubt about there being a connection between drunk driving and rising road fatalities, here is a piece of irrefutable evidence. In little over two months after the Mumbai police began an intensive drive against drunk driving and started sending offenders to jail, the number of deaths in road accidents in Mumbai have come down by almost half.

While in July last year, Mumbai had recorded 68 deaths in road accidents, for the same month this year the number is down to 38. The number compares favourably with July 2005 and July 2004 figures too, when the number of road fatalities recorded were 49 and 54 respectively.

"There is no doubt that the number of road fatalities are down because of our drive against drunk driving. We are confident that deaths in road accidents will further reduce in the coming months because the department is not going to ease up pressure on drunk drivers," Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Harish Baijal told Mumbai Mirror on Tuesday.

Unlike earlier when offenders were just fined, drunk drivers are now being convicted and sentenced to imprisonment ranging from a day to 20 days.

Their licences are also being suspended for six months. In fact, just on Tuesday, 94 people accused of drunk driving were sentenced to 20 days in jail.

Executive chairman of Western India Automobile Association, Nitin Dossa, who has carried out studies on road fatalities, says there is no doubt that a majority of road accidents are caused by drunk driving.

"We are happy that the Mumbai traffic police has taken up this drive. It was a smart move on their part to start sending offenders to jail because the fine had lost its sting.

"I just hope they continue the drive at least for six months more. It is important to drill into the heads of people that drunk driving can be fatal," Dossa said.

Since June 20 this year, when the drive was launched, 491 drunk drivers have been convicted and the traffic department has collected Rs 1.07 crore in fines.

"This is unprecedented. Nobody was ever sent to jail for drunk driving before this drive was launched. This is the reason why people are now afraid. It has also earned DCP Baijal the sobriquet of Advocate Baijal because he is himself arguing cases in the court," Dossa said.

He said people are now planning their evenings taking into account that they may not be able to drive back home. "I know friends who do not take their car while going out drinking with friends. They take a cab home and that is a very sensible and safe option," Dossa said.

He also said that increasingly people going out drinking in a group are asking one of them to stay sober so that he can drive all back safely.

"These are some of behavioural changes that are taking place now because of the Mumbai police's drive. It's an incredible change," he said.

Some questions:

1. Whether this road accidents mentioned is only for drunk driving?? 38 deaths in one whole month in mumbai... is it possible for all kinds of road accidents??

2. Whats your take on drunk driving, we see people drive drunk in foreing land too... do u think indians generally drink extra than they can take??

3. One of my friends told his girlfriend that i dont drink, he said she respected me, but she said that she respect those more who knows the problems from drinking and knows how much to drink... so do u think the government should give guide for how much to drink>??

4. What other options do you think can be considered to reduce drunk driving especially by rich brats who are saved easily😊

Death on account of rash and negligent driving is certainly on the rise, not just in Mumbai, but across the state, country... world, I dont know. With the increase in the BPO culture and the increase in the number of Lounges/ Bars/ Discos, the number of people who choose to hang out in these places has certainly increased. So has the ability to spend increased, as BPOs has certainly increased the general salary levels across the industry. With increase in the spending capacity, there is a considerable change in the "attitude" of persons...... drinking or consumption of alchohol is no longer just restricted to the affluent or the poor, consumption of alchohol is often considered as a status symbol, leading to a great deal of pressure on the new entrants to adapt to it as well, irrespective of whether they have the head to take it or not.

there is definitely an increase in the number of cars being purchased in Mumbai. From a car per family, it is now practically at least 3 cars per family... Youngsters with the car wheels under their hands, with alcohol in their systems is definitely a big risk on the roads these days.

Lot of pressure on the youth today to be "trendy" could make them do things beyond proportion

Unlikely to solve anything. In any case, everyone has a different limit. One could consume over 8 pegs and still have a clear head while another can get high and out of control with just one pint of beer. Subjective matters cannot be regulated.

The government is certainly serious about their current mission. Be it any time of the night, in the areas which are more frequented by persons who drink and drive, the Police keep a check and fines are hefty. In so far as saving rich brats are concerned, unless we change our systems to make justice equal to all, we may not be able to achieve it.

I went to a party Mom,
I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom,
So I drank soda instead.

I really felt proud inside, Mom,
The way you said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, Mom,
Even though the others said I should.

I know I did the right thing, Mom,
I know you are always right.
Now the party is finally ending, Mom,
As everyone is driving out of sight.

As I got into my car, Mom,
I knew I'd get home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me,
So responsible and sweet.

I started to drive away, Mom,
But as I pulled out into the road,
The other car didn't see me, Mom,
And hit me like a load.

As I lay there on the pavement, Mom,
I hear the policeman say,
"The other guy is drunk," Mom,
And now I'm the one who will pay.

I'm lying here dying, Mom....
I wish you'd get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom?
My life just burst like a balloon.

There is blood all around me, Mom,
And most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom,
I'll die in a short time.

I just wanted to tell you, Mom,
I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom.
The others didn't think.

He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank
And I will die.

Why do people drink, Mom?
It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now.
Pains just like a knife.

The guy who hit me is walking, Mom,
And I don't think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying
And all he can do is stare.

Tell my brother not to cry, Mom.
Tell Daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, Mom,
Put "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.

Someone should have told him, Mom,
Not to drink and drive.
If only they had told him, Mom,
I would still be alive.

My breath is getting shorter, Mom.
I'm becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom.
When I needed you, you were always there.

I have one last question, Mom.
Before I say good bye.
I didn't drink and drive,
So why am I the one to die?

The number sounds too less to me. 38 may be related to drunk driving that was blatantly obvious probably. I've never seen cops in Mumbai giving the drunkenness test to anyone :) my knowledge of india is over a decade old 😳.

2. Whats your take on drunk driving, we see people drive drunk in foreing land too... do u think indians generally drink extra than they can take??

no clue! indians that i know of over here do have designated drivers. the incidences of deaths and drunken driving news reflect a diverse population in terms of ethnicity. It is the AGE usually (young adults)

3. One of my friends told his girlfriend that i dont drink, he said she respected me, but she said that she respect those more who knows the problems from drinking and knows how much to drink... so do u think the government should give guide for how much to drink>??

Government cannot. It completely depends on the person's body, weight, age, frame of mind, amount of food consumed, over-all metabolism :) The DUI limits also should actually vary I think :)

4. What other options do you think can be considered to reduce drunk driving especially by rich brats who are saved easily😊

No bail and SEVERE JAIL TIME. no celebrity justice and first violation should take away driving rights for life.

Kabhijit ......Even in Hyderabad they are doing those test....but donot know if it is implemented seriously!
Drinking is one's own personal choice...The amount of alcohol....the brand of alcohal...the company with whom they want to drink is also a personal choice...but what really matters is irresponsible driving on the roads....they need to regret later for the accidents which they do in drunken state!!
Regarding ...drinking and status..of the people.....nowadays....if people don't drink...they are considered to be downmarket 😆...or orthodox 😕 😛....my colleagues.....who are much younger to me drink gallons of beer easily and interestingly they are traditional girls from traditional families....but they drive vehicles in a balanced state even when they are drunk..but Idonot take risk of getting into their vehicles😛!
Cheers,
Mythili

1. Whether this road accidents mentioned is only for drunk driving?? 38 deaths in one whole month in mumbai... is it possible for all kinds of road accidents??

Mumbai being such a big city, I think, 38 is a very small number for people dying due to road accidents.

2. Whats your take on drunk driving, we see people drive drunk in foreing land too... do u think indians generally drink extra than they can take??

If the drinks are free, people drink. I am not sure if that is an Indian thing to do or it is universal but having been with Indians the most, I can talk for them. I was in Gujarat before and so of course, no I have had no alcohol experience there. Here in the USA though, every party (desi or non-desi) has open/paid bar. When it is open for everyone, people drink their a$$es off. I have seen some really big shots, earning 7 figures, go crazy when the drinks are free. They may have designated drivers, but so what! It is just cheap/shameful to act in such an unsophisticated manner. I hate the attitude where people do something just because it is free. 🤢

3. One of my friends told his girlfriend that i dont drink, he said she respected me, but she said that she respect those more who knows the problems from drinking and knows how much to drink... so do u think the government should give guide for how much to drink>??

Wah bhai Wah!! I agree with the girl that people who know their limits are noteworthy but this poor guy does not drink at all and she almost says that she respects people more who drink. 😕

Well anyway though, Govt. can maybe give out guides about how much is right and when/when not it is right. But more or less, it is in an individual's hands. If you are at a personal party, what is the Govt to do? It is every individual's responsiblity to take care of themselves and in this case, also of people around them.

4. What other options do you think can be considered to reduce drunk driving especially by rich brats who are saved easily😊

As Subha Di said, their driving priviliges should be taken away for a significant time and they should serve a considerable prison-time.

Personally, I despise alcohol and even though it is illegal for me to drink right now, college functions and parties have a lot of alcohol. I have never touched it and my friends think that I am a little too conservative and that I should at least drink socially to be with the flow. I have never been able to understand these thoughts but I stick to my ground and refrain from all this. But there are people who get so carried away by peer pressure that they almost ruin their lives. I don't know how one can run away from peer pressure but this is a big bane to the society. 😔

Vinu, I have read this poem many times before but everytime I read it, I feel very sad. It such a sad but true plight on the roads. Thanks for sharing though!

Just a couple months back, there was this case when a drunk driver was driving at like 150+ 😲 and he arrived at a toll booth and he drove right into it creating explosions all around. I don't remember how many people exactly died and where exactly it happened but it was such a horrific sight. Why do people do this? 😔

Drunk driving campaign cuts road deaths in july by half

Some questions:

1. Whether this road accidents mentioned is only for drunk driving?? 38 deaths in one whole month in mumbai... is it possible for all kinds of road accidents??

Mumbai is a very big City so 38 deaths in one whole month sounds pretty low.......... unless you are saying 38 deaths from drunk driving!

2. Whats your take on drunk driving, we see people drive drunk in foreing land too... do u think indians generally drink extra than they can take??

I am not competent of answering about India......... sorry😳

3. One of my friends told his girlfriend that i dont drink, he said she respected me, but she said that she respect those more who knows the problems from drinking and knows how much to drink... so do u think the government should give guide for how much to drink>??

Here in Canada we are made aware of the dangers through media etc. It takes no more than half a glass of wine to be pronounced drunk. We are shown what images we see driving if we had one glass, two glasses etc.

4. What other options do you think can be considered to reduce drunk driving especially by rich brats who are saved easily😊

Learn the policy of Designated Driving!!! Adopt it in India too for it really works here in the western world. A designated driver can be a friend who doesnot drink with the group and can drive everyone home safely. We also have bus systems, cabs. and all kinds of options when people want to drink at special times e.g. X'mas parties. If there is a couple going, one person can always be the designated driver. People who are used to consuming alcohol will not stop no matter what. So adopt the Designated Driver policy.😛

I think more people die on the Bombay Agra road on a monthly basis between Mumbai and Nashik due to truck-other vehicle crashes.(Try driving that road between 2AM-6AM and see how many accidents occur, how many near deaths you yourself encounter) If the number is really 38, I would applaud how much we have this problem under control, considering Mumbai's population

2. Whats your take on drunk driving, we see people drive drunk in foreing land too... do u think indians generally drink extra than they can take??

are you kidding, I think Indians are pretty much controlled as compared to others, you gotta see Irish/Russians/Italians or maybe American kids after a big game

3. One of my friends told his girlfriend that i dont drink, he said she respected me, but she said that she respect those more who knows the problems from drinking and knows how much to drink... so do u think the government should give guide for how much to drink>??

Govt already has policies regards how much blood alcohol level you can have, that is what drives those breathilizers you see in the picture above

check here --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_alcohol_concentration

that translates to I think 2 -3 beers, 1 -2 glasses of one, couple of shots of Whiskey, etc, what more do you want, do you want them to go by brands?

4. What other options do you think can be considered to reduce drunk driving especially by rich brats who are saved easily😊

Have breathilizers installed in cars, I know they were working on concept cars which has breathlizers, where it senses alcohol on the driver, if it is over a limit, the engine startup doesnt occur
