A very interesting article in The Times Of India

Will males get redundant?
Anubha Sawhney

Ladies, the next time you say that to a guy you're not particularly interested in, stop and think. Fast forward to the future and that seemingly harmless brush-off might just translate into a real-time situation. For scientists are in the process of fine-tuning a process where a sperm can be created from bone marrow.

According to German researchers, stem cells taken from men's bone marrow can be coaxed into something that resembles an immature sperm cell. They hope to use their findings to come up with new and better fertility treatments for men and women.

"Our next goal is to see if we can get the spermatogonial stem cells to progress to mature sperm in the laboratory and this should take around three to five years of experiments," said Prof Karim Nayernia, who led the study while at the University of Gottingen in Germany.

While the research will be fine-tuned over the years, it's already got people wondering. Is it possible that someday we might just have a world empty of the male species? For, once the technique of producing sperm from bone marrow is mastered, it is possible that female bone marrow will be used for the process.

Should that be the case, it's obvious all the babies will be girls because females cannot produce Y-chromosome sperm. Science apart, the idea seems very appealing, if not ideal. For one, there will be no violence Bomb Iraq? And forego all those exquisite carpets and exotic spices? Forget it, darling!

In a world without men, sports will not mean raging hormones (Whoever heard of a woman biting off another's ear? Or butting her in the chest?).

Subtract men from this planet and 'serial killer' will just mean the person who fired the gun in the nail-biting final episode of your favourite soap, not a psychopath with a personality disorder. Without men, global decisions will be taken with a warm heart and world summits sealed with perfectly manicured handshakes.

Apart from the questions highlighted above.....the overriding question is......

What in your opinion will PLANET ANDROMEDA look like?😃

Bilkul sahi farmaya aapne!

Sex ratio quite skewed in Khadia
Radha Sharma
[24 Apr, 2007 l 0040 hrs ISTlTIMES NEWS NETWORK]

AHMEDABAD: Oops! State health minister Ashok Bhatt, who is going around leading the campaign to save the girl child, ought to look in his own backyard. In his constituency Khadia, the sex ratio has dropped from 877 girls per 1,000 boys in year 2003 to 767 in 2005.

Figures of ward-wise sex ratio as per the civil registration system in areas in the AMC limits reveal that in 2003 the sex ratio of girls in the 0-6 age group in Khadia was 877. In 2004, the ratio showed an improvement and was recorded at 897. The year 2005, however, saw a sharp decline wherein the sex ratio dropped to a dismal 767!

This is ironical considering that Bhatt is credited with leading CM Narendra Modi's 'Beti Bachao Abhiyaan' from the front. In fact, Bhatt, who is known to get quite emotional talking about the killing of the girl child in the mother's womb, also won support for this cause cutting across party lines in the recently concluded state Assembly session!

It is only apt then that Bhatt and Modi are invitees to the week-long 'Beti Bachao Saptah' kicked off in Khadia. On Monday, the week-long programme would be blessed by spiritual guru Indira Betiji.

"We are not happy with the sex ratio in Khadia. We would like to see it go upwards of 900," Bhatt, who has been appealing to people to pledge they will not prevent the birth of girl child, told TOI.

As per the 2005 CRS figures, wards with lowest sex ratio in the city include Nava Wadaj (662), Potaliya (690), Nikol Road (689), Isanpur (714) and Bag-e-Firdaus (719).
