This thought came up coz:

My Bro being cool that my 3 years old niece knows all the objects in day to day life, if u give her 2 slices of apple and give 2 more then she says I eat 4 slices but she does know the word plus : ), while my SIL is always concerned that my niece darling cannot do well with preschool books. 60% theoretical knowledge, I gained in schools is no use unless u practically get into it.
  1. Loved reading biology / labeling diagrams but upon first dissection, realized cannot stand blood (dizzy).

That does bring in the question whether a person should take a practical or theoretical approach to any task in life. Balance between both is ideal, what's your take believe more on theoretical or practical exposure? And yes!, if you prefer a reason or example

IMO - Only with theoretical knowledge of any assignments you cannot cruise your ship to Success Island. Being practical or practical knowledge plays a role or very important role successfully complete it, leaving the competition behind.

It depends upon each situation. Though generally at least little bit of theoretical knowledge is essential to proceed to the pratical approach.

If one doesnt know how to cook at all then one need a reference cookbook to start with. After reading the theoretical part, one can go and try the partical.

Then again there is nothing better than experience.

hmm.. Combination of both is fantastic.. but i would prefer a more practical aspect if given choice b/w the 2...Sure theoretical knowledge is needed but you learn those "little things" only in when faced in practical situation. Example would be accounting... lots of paper knowledge required [Sigh!! ] but nothing if you don't get the practical experiance.. Same with Doctors, Lab scientists [like QT di 😛], Managerial position holders, etc.

Firstly dats a nice topic

For me both are equal, u can't do any practical without some theory..and theory without any pratical is useless..

u always start with a theory first and using this theory u can do some pratical...for me theory is first step...for example ur doing an experiment in biology, u have to knw the theory first and then do the experiment...u cnt just do the experiment because u wnt knw anything...so for me theory is as important as pratical...

Now secondly it will b useless of knwing nly theory, u will have to do some practices as well....because theory are things which have been written by some other people...its u who will have to use these theory in real life to knw whether the theory is right or not...theory are words of other ppls not urs...nly by praticing it that u will learrn

Nice topic Raj... 👏

Well the ideal one would be as you said a mix of the theorey and practical.....I like the way they teach the little kids in the skools here in US ..so much emphasis is put on the practical aspect rather than the theory part..

I am an HR person...and i know from my personal experience that in the real world hardly any of these theories work....we have to think practically all the time....so i am all for the practical knowledge..theories are for teaching further ...they are hardly applicable in the real life.... 😊

Theory give you basic knowledge but Practical is what teaches you things in real life.

Raj,
A very good topic and I totally agree with you. I was reading some research about teaching kids and they were stressing too much on abstract teaching rather than theory. For kids that young (preschooler) they don't tend to understand numbers and time concept like we do. But they do understand abstract and things they can touch and feel. It's same for older people too. The more we bring practicle into our life the more concept is easier and remains with you for ever. Theory kind of does not last long.

Example about ur niece counting apples and teachign math is more affective than going through preschool book and teaching them meaning of + .. I used to get immpatient at my daughter and ask her to get ready soon and that we are getting late. Then my Dr. told that kids these young does not understand concept of late or early. They don't understand time like we do....so even if i tel her we are late and yell she don't know exactly what we are saying, but they understand time based on praticle experience. Like one day i was late to pick up my daughter and she asked me why was I late... I asked her how she knew and she said 'coz we were not in playground, we already finished our snack and you were still not here. So I think practicle and abstract aproach is more important than theory. I won't worry if 4 year old does not understand + or signs, becuase they are grasping addition when they count apples or cereal so they are building a strong fondation.

After 21 years of schooling when I went onto my first job and was commisioning a Heat Exchanger, It was working as advertised, along in my opinion I had the connections wrong, I spent 3-4 hrs smoke, coffee, walking around rethinking why according to basic Thermodynamic principles, I realized, they had named the cables incorrectly(cant remember specifics it was centuries ago😆)

Moral of the story 😆 :
If all you care about making things work, see how it is done in real life and do it that way, Practical approach is great 😃

If you want to know why it works the way it works theoretical approach is great, You need to have a lot of time and patience on hand, nowadays who has time 😆 ?

'Theoratically speaking', there needs to be a balance of both...but in reality do we find this balance??

Theory is needed to get started on a few basics. For instance the little 3 year old has comprehended the 'theory' of addition. Just because its not on paper does not mean she does not know the theory. Books or literature are not the only source for theory.. life skills or practical learning, helps you remember the minor things that books cannot help you remember.
Theoratical knowledge at a later date will let you apply the theory in practical life as far as sciences go..
There are some aspects in life that can only come via experience and failures and no pun intended, that is my theory... 😊
