Background: Based on normal day to day communication with people who use I, me, my , myself a lot this thought came to my mind. Usage of "I" more often in expression of views for one of a reality contestant gave an impression that person is egoist and self centered person. This was one of feedback of team member for a development manager who uses "I" very often is – this guy takes credit for everything we do, saying everything he did by saying I, I is so de-motivating lol We know the development manager who due to weak communication always starts with I think, I know, I feel, I wrong …. lol

IMO its way of expression, agree if used for self praise and proving your point by demeaning others then yes its egoist/self centered remark, otherwise it's cool.

Usage of words like I, me, my, myself very often in day to day communication portrays a self centric/egoist personality or image?

Any suggestions on how and when to use 'I' and how to avoid it, this would be great help for many of us.Thanks!

PS – LOL hope u didn't find this post self centric.. lol.. also am not in communication field as you might derive from my posting am just warming up here😊

Politically correct term might be "Team knows" .."Team does".."Team thinks".....finally "Team is wrong" 😆

Usage of "I" in professional environment might act as a de-motivator in case you have mentioned above, but probably individual efforts sometimes need to be recognised too.. I guess its "Neither here nor there" thing, balancing act might prove fruitful here too 😊

Disclaimer :its a non-professional opinion 😛 If anybody follows it...Im not responsible for anything. Do it at your own risk 😆

WE have to be politically correct. I never use IMO / me / I when I actually speak.. Who does?
Over here, we wish not to hurt anyone and not to make it a general comment. This is yet another PC-protection for an opinion.

Thought provoking topic👏

If we consider learnt people( good educationalists or philosphers or spiritual gurus) they don't prefer using "I" often.

Shri Jiddu Krishna Murthy(eminent educationalist and philospher) used the word "We" instead of "I".

If you consider Ramana Maharshi "Who am I" is a big book of his !!!

The usage or misusage of this concept of not using "I" is seen in some modern days so called Spiritual guru's also. There is a spiritual guru in South India, whenever he wants to use "I" he says "swamiji",intially we used to think he is speaking about his guru but later we realised that the swamiji is himself!!!

For that matter we are taught the usage of the term "our" more than "my" or "mine".

Its better to use the word we,our wherever it is possible except for the things like "Our Husband " or "Our wife"!!!!

cheers,

Mythili

Start with using WE liberally, you can almost pass it off as the Royal WE 😉 till you get the hang of using it appropriately. Each one of us have a different style and would be difficult to say which trick would work for whom

Good topic.

I think to make life easier , you have to be in inclusive mindset rather then exclusive. Therefore I use "Let's do this" or "we are getting late" at home..!!!!

At work even more so to keep morale and work flow flowing smooth. But you have to think independently though. It's tricky but you live and learn.

Oh Myth.... 🤣 @ Husband/Wife comment...😆

Your Swamiji story reminds me of song from movie Kisna "Aham Brahmasami, phir mein kaise mandir jaon" I love that song and ponder about lyrics every time I hear it..!!!!!

Know people do use I while speaking... as for IMO - have used it before in formal meeting to just to play safe in front of big guns.

Yup Agreed - but do you really feel that reading a response or communication which has I, I excessively used make you feel a person is self centric?
