I wish people would stop referring to Hindi as a national language. India has no national language but recognizes 23 official languages. There are also hundreds of unofficial languages and dialects spoken across India.

I think Kiccha Sudeepa either misspoke or was misquoted or has a poor understanding of the situation.

Hindi and English have been the default common languages in India. Hindi movies have dominated India because of the larger spread of Hindi speakers. However, I must add that Hindi movies never exploded in the South Indian market the way they did in other states.

Things are shifting now. Since Baahubali, more South Indian films are breaking into the pan-Indian market. But this phenomenon is not isolated to India. There is a global cultural shift. People across the world are hooked on K-dramas or Telenovelas. More and more English-speaking audiences are watching movies made in foreign languages by foreign directors.

We cannot ignore the cultural ecosystem impact

- social media has made global celebrities and perspectives accessible to the world

- streaming media has made global films and languages accessible to the world

- In India, that means more Indians who once only knew Bollywood megastars now are familiar with other film megastars

- In the past few years, especially during the pandemic, people who saw exclusively Bollywood movies have consumed movies in other Indian languages, enjoyed what they saw, and been curious about more.

Then there is also the factor of mass appeal. South Indian filmmakers are creating theatrical cinema full of larger-than-life characters, pulse-pounding action, and narratives that click with the masses.The masses' appetite for Bollywood's sweeping romances seems to have dwindled.

Bollywood makers are also experimenting more on the streaming platform. There have been some fantastic movies on streaming and Bollywood is exploring new boundaries.

It must also be noted that Pushpa, KGF, and RRR represent a subset of hypermasculine cinema. The most recent pan-Indian sweeping romance Radhe-Shyam bombed.
