Is it not true what they say that off late it is mediocrity that is glorified and admired?

Is it not true that India in spite of not producing any World defining products or technologies is considered to be a technology super power and software companies are moving here just to cut costs and have cheap GOOD LABOR though not highly exceptional labor.

Thank you,

Yes thats true. Unfortunately Indian society promotes medicracy by its "Chalta hai" 😡 attitude and the ever persisting 'something is better than nothing'.

Excellence is something which not demanded if its there fine but if not who cares .

The mediocrity lovers syndrome is not limited to India alone or to reality TV.

Take the job hunting market for example: Candidates with mediocre knowledge, but affable personalities are given higher preference over others who are more work-oriented.

The emphasis on "personality" over actual knowledge/talent is what places Mediocrity on a pedestal.

"Mediocrity is bound to thrive while excellence must struggle to survive."

I think mediocrity is relative. What one considers mediocre could be reaching many with ease. An example which Abhijit gave.

In my personal experience, when I practiced in a rural area, although my English is better than most Aemricans I know, I had difficulty establishing where people with less experience, lesser qualifications and weaker training came and took away my patients. A few years ago I realized that those people could communicate at third grade education level -which was average level of education of people more than 55 in the county. So I dumbed down my parlance and thrived.

Hi friends!

Let us have a glance on the basic definitions of Quality and Mediocrity:

Quality:

Quality refers to the inherent or distinctive characteristics or properties of a person, object, process or other thing. Such characteristics or properties may set a person or thing apart from other persons or things, or may denote some degree of achievement or excellence. When used in relation to people, the term may also signify a personal character or trait

Mediocrity:

ordinariness as a consequence of being average and not outstanding [syn: averageness] 2: a person of second-rate ability or value; "a team of aging second-raters";

Coming back to the topic.

The term Mediocrity is a highly relative term. What may be a good quality thing to one person may be a mediocritic thing to another.Who is the person to decide that other is mediocre or some one has quality.

Ok Some one is judged as Mediocre does it mean he/she does'nt have any right to succeed,he/she may develop in future. All are not born with the brains of Albert Einstein,Newton or Ramanujam. We need to survive in this world,so we try to develop but in this process we may look mediocritic to the people who are developed already.

All this is a part of the process of SURVIVAL FOR EXISTENCE.

I feel like quoting Napolean:

When small men attempt great enterprises, they always end by reducing them to the level of their mediocrity.

Is it not true what they say that off late it is mediocrity that is glorified and admired?

If excellence means having a grandiose sense of self-importance, or trying to show off by behaving 'being different' and eventually burn out from that routine, then mediocrity and modesty is the way to go, just imho.

Is it not true that India in spite of not producing any World defining products or technologies is considered to be a technology super power and software companies are moving here just to cut costs and have cheap GOOD LABOR though not highly exceptional labor.

If "cheap GOOD LABOR" and "costly but highly exceptional labor" give you the same quality of the end product, then as a manufacturer which type of labor would you select?

I did not know people equate EXCELLENCE with SELF IMPORTANCE. So does that mean somone who is exception in his profession, in his knowledge is feeling self - important?

I never knew "SHOWING OFF" is considered as excellence, here when I said excellence, I do not think I left any leeway for such misconceptions and misconstrusions. Sorry, but completely missed the point here !

"Being Different" - is not a crime? It is very few people who have the courage to do that. If you consider being gay as being different that is not what I meant too. To be able to think out of the box and to leave out the world's so-called accepted level of understanding, to stand out from the crowd, to think of unconventional solutions, all these things are what I meant. And to think consistently in this manner requires excellence otherwise man would not have been able to invent anything in this world. It is not the ones who look at others as fools that invent things but those that look at problems differently that can offer solutions.

It is misconceptions on what excellence is, that causes these errors in thinking.

Regarding your answer to the second question, that is not right. When I meant highly exceptional labor, it means that can produce quality goods. So your connotation is absolutely wrong.

Thanks,

Velu Natarajan

The above sentence says it all. I will give an example from my experience. In Class VII our English Ma'am divided the entire class into groups and gave us situations of a Shakespearean drama and asked us to write about it. I used dictionary and used the toughest words possible and also wrote everything as much in Queen's English. In my opinion we did really good compared to other groups. When the grading came the other group got higher grade than ours and I was surprised at a mediocre work getting more grade. This is what the teacher told me 'Write simple and interesting. Don't thesaurize your composition. Don't try to impress your reader with big words.'

As I said before mediocrity is relative.
