Western world money and kids play a part in couples not wanting to breakup. I know people who are separated and have shared custody of kids. Works well for both and kids when they grow up enough understand the situation and happy to spend time at both camps. Unless of-course it is a bitter split and long drawn custody battle kids do suffer quite a bit.

In Indian scenario social stigma is the number one factor, followed by kids, family and i guess money plays a part too. I think in our culture women get a bad bargain in split up. It always looks as if the women is at fault for not making the marriage work. My question is why is it women's job to make the marriage work.
