The Ad is really disgusting...while Ash or her manager should have been more careful about the way her image is used... the real culprit is the Ad agency...

This i agree with. The statement should have been worded strongly to disapprove the use of racist imagery.

This nails it. Will talk about the racism, slavery debate in another post, but it goes without saying that all people concerned in the ad have to take moral and social responsibility. How hard can it be to acknowledge that a mistake has been made and for the concerned people to apologize.
Choosing to stay mum and ignoring the matter is coming across as real worse and sending out a message to the public that from the ad makers to the model no one cares one way or the other.

Must say that people writing the open letter have used their words wisely and were very respectful in their tone (unlike quite a lot of the posts in here).

Its highly unlikely that the artist(not just the Aish status) is not aware of how her pictures will be used. Come on contract specifies terms and everything. it was not a random photo-shoot!!

even if we agree Aish was not aware.. will she file a suit for wrongful use of the pictures? if not, then for sure she was the part of the final product.

I can't believe some don't think it is racist because clearly it is in the way the ad has been created. And please no one is accusing Aishwariya. But I do think she should have realised what the advert looked like. If that I would have requested to been taken off.

Looks like Kalyan jewellers wanted to portray that women wearing their jewels look royal but they ended up showing child labour and yes Racism too. They definitely get big share of blame here but then Aishwarya's team should have signed some contract stating some guidelines how her photographs should or should not be used. Did she issue any clarification?

Some people think slavery is a historical concept ... ... ... ... i'm sorry but there is too much laughing in my head

By current estimates there are anywhere between 20-30 million slaves in the world. And before you try to expand on the difference between this slavery and that slavery - this figure includes all kinds from slave labour to sex slaves to child slavery ...

This image is repulsive and highlights some of the worst part of our history - from child labour to racism. There is nothing artistic about it. And no, the image has nothing in common with adults choosing an employment where a part of their job is holding an umbrella and being paid for it

I doubt they would care or listen to her if she voiced her concern - i am not saying she should not try or attempt to take action, I am sure she and her team will for sure. Sanjay was not all wrong, he was just trying to explain how the business works. Do you really think Aishwarya creates the concepts or graphics POST the shoot?

There are so many models whose pictures get taken and they have no control what happens after to it. They can huff and puff about it but they rarely get anything out of it. The brand should be held more at fault than Aishwarya.

Ofcourse Ash is a public figure - and an important one, so I am pretty sure she will address this issue. This is someone who boycotted the Filmfare awards for insulting her family - and has not attended since! This is someone who took on Salman Khan years ago and went against the whole industry, She's always taken strong stands and I am sure she will this time as well.

Prior to any photo shoot a model is briefed on concept and theme. It is outlined in the contract signed. I am assuming she was told this is a "maharani" theme, which is innocent enough.

Prior to the final publishing, models, set designers, photographers, most major people involved in the creative process get a "final proof" and "layouts". People can object at this stage. Usually newcomers rarely object nor do they have the clout to. However, it is very common for models to object if they find an image unflattering or conflicting with their image. Models have withheld images if it wasn't how they intended. Photographers too will object if the "photoshop" job takes away from their creativity.

So it is highly unlikely that neither Ash nor her team saw the final ad before publishing. It is also unlikely that someone of Ash's stature who is still a major influential celebrity had no say on the final look.

This is a huge oversight on the part of Ash and/or her team. It is likely that being a big celeb she delegates all her decision making to her team. After this big snafu, she needs to step up, apologize and fire her team and hire competent people who won't tarnish her image. It is also a lesson for all celebs. No matter how big you get, be involved in your decision making.

@Charminggenie

So according to you people should be like "This may look like racism and slavery, but it isn't. It is not our fault that it looks eerily similar to colonial images. That is your problem. Indian history is different. So you will just have to buy our word that the concept is different. We are not going to care or apologize that we unintentionally depicted racism"

Whether the racism is intentional or unintentional, it bears semblance to racist imagery and warrants sincere immediate apology.

Discrimination based on skin tone is still internalized racism. It applies even if the aggressor and victim are both of the same race.
