Anyone who wants to debate the Deepika Padukone / Vogue video?😆
I found it elitist and quite self indulgent. I thought the maker had no clue what actual empowerment ought to entail and made it somehow all about the right to be sexually irresponsible

In case there is a child in India who has not seen it -

There is a MALE parody out as well.😆

I think some people are stuck with sex thing in the message but Its not the first time such video is made. Some activist started campaigning my body my choice as a right for abortion.

The maker tried to copy this video and forgot the purpose behind the video.

I found everything but justifying infidelity OK in this video.
Justifying infidelity is disturbing to me.

I found it a little too self indulgent.
'My pleasure may be your pain'😆
Also 'dont get angry if I come home at 430 AM'😆

Try picture a male saying this and see how people react.

I will proclaim myself a feminist any day of the week, but this video seems to promote selfishness and irresponsibility, rather than independence and self reliance

Haha debated it a lot on Bollywood forum

To distill

My critique

- Infidelity is never right. That part bothered me.
- This appears to be a spoken word piece. A spoken word narrator should have been chosen.
- It preaches to the choir. It resonates with people who support women's choices. But it doesn't give people who don't support these choices, compelling reasons to change their mind.
- They did a poor job with verbiage and editing. The purple prose gets misinterpreted and lost in translation. I don't think the makers intended to condone infidelity or promote selfishness, but failed to consider how such video would appear to Indian masses.

My support

- The overall intent is good. My Body, My Choice is a very important message.
- The aesthetic feel is very attention grabbing
- Sexual freedom is extremely important too. It is not just the urban woman's issue. India as a nation is slowly willing to accept education, healthcare, career and other choices for women. However, offering women sexual and social freedom still strikes panic and makes many people uncomfortable. I think part of the backlash is people who find women demanding sexual freedom unpalatable. When women criticize sexually active men, we are not demanding that men be chaste and virginal, we are demanding that they stop viewing us as s**ts for doing so or assume that we have automatically become free for all.

It was just another ad and people started debating on it. We never saw such debate about fairness cream which doesnt improve fairness or shampoo which never prevent hair loss 😆
I think 4.30 am was meant for the girls working in call centers in India.

The words ruined it because they are open to interpretation. And such words will cause debate no matter who utters them.

My pleasure, might be your pain.
My songs, your noise

And sentences like these can be interpreted in any way.

Then of course the lines on returning home at certain timings and the lines on sex.

The fact that it is too urban and elitist and never took up main issue that vast majority of women are facing yet it inserted few images of tribal women for tokenism, made it look shallow.

I feel it was hypocritical and contradictory on many levels. I do not understand how she asks him to treasure her love but herself declares it is her choice to have sex outside marriage, have baby or not etc. Huh? Okay, everything is her choice but why is she directing him to do something? His choice also then whether he treasures the love or not!

It seemed to be talking down to men. I wonder why it referred to only them when it is women also who discriminate against each other! The "you" in the video seemed to be male only.

It seemed anarchist due to the kind of language it used. I agree with some messages in it but on the whole I consider it a failed and flawed attempt.

I also consider it double standards to have campaigns beseeching world to rethink masculinity but declare #MyChoice in everything a female wants to do. If it's #MyChoice then it's for everyone to decide their own choices.

People who rant about feminism and empowerment these days often forget what is actually means.
Being empowered does not mean wearing modern clothes and coming back from home at 4 in the morning just because.
Being empowered means having the courage to wear traditional clothes and leaving your job to take care of your child solely because it is your choice. A choice not determined by external factors.

I don't think one is empowering and not the other. I think the video was trying to get to the point that she has a choice to be modern, sexually active, have a career and be empowered too.

Empowerment is when she can choose to work or be a stay at home mom. Not because she needs to but because she wants to.

Empowerment is when she can choose to work late or check out right on the dot at 5. Not because she needs to but because she wants to.

Empowerment is when she can wear daisy dukes and tank tops or be clad in a hijaab. Not because she needs to but because she wants to.

Empowerment is when you have the freedom and support to make your life choices. To live a life based on your dreams and aspirations.

Of course that doesn't mean you trample on the choices, dreams and aspirations of others. A relationship is a compromise and both parties involved have to give and take. In India, women often don't have choices in relationships. They are expected to give and give, but don't have partners who are willing to give some. Men often get the freedom to work late, party late and do many things women cannot. Women don't have choices, especially married women can forget it. Yes there are exceptions, there are horrible abusive women too. There are very accommodating caring husbands who fulfill all their wives dreams too. There are always exceptions. The general society is stacked against women.

The aim of this video is to give her these choices and rights. Let people know that she too has a say in society. Unfortunately, with poor verbiage and lack of awareness about the social frameworks in most of India they totally botched up and came across as offensive and biased.
