When I was in India I was not used to giving gratuity to my hair stylish, delivery guy etc. I am not sure how the trend is in India right now. However, in US you are expected to pay gratuity to your hair stylish once your hair are done, delivery guy, etc. It is considered rude if you don't tip them proper.

Debate- Do you think "tipping" is unnecessary? Or you think it's well deserved?

That's what I was thinking Abhijit..if they want to tip why only few occupassion. I personally don't like idea of tipping. I am already paying for service I am getting to the Owner, now why am I expected to "tip" extra. Some business have compulsory gratuity which just annoys me. Paying big gratuity is more like a "fashion" or "in" thing rather than appreciating sometimes.

Like abhijit mentioned genitors or maintenance guys are never tipped. so why exclude some. And i think owner should be responsible to pay fair to employee. I think we already pay the price when we go out to buy that service like "hair cut" now why to tip when we are already paying for the service. 😕

Recently I went to a hair cut for my daughter and they had board there that we do not accept gratuity. This was first time in some saloon in US i read that and was suprised ...well impressed kind of suprise.

I don't like to give a "tip", period. Yap I hear you saying: "oye kathore!"
But since it's a global phenomenon, as I learned sometimes back, each country and each region has different tipping criteria, different customs, I try to get along with it aka "be roman" thing.
Do we encourage "bribery" or at least acclimatize mindsets of workers for it with tipping? I often ponder.

Don't forget you have to tip house cleaners too!!! 😕

Don't mind tipping for exceptional service and you feel like it but tipping 20% to the waitress in the restaurant when there are so many ppl behind the great food experience is ridiculous. Some restaurants collect tips and distribute amongst entire staff.

I noticed something funny at JFK airport when flying to Dubai last year. Very affluent middle eastern family of about 12 members of which 2 looked like maids was in the First class check in line and the porter brought in 35 pieces of their luggage. The guy gave him $10 tip and the porter was furious arguing that he deserved at least $1 for each piece of luggage. Finally the guy gave him another $10 bill and the porter walked away mouthing some words I can't repeat here. IMHO the porter deserved at least $50 for hauling 2 cartfuls of luggage.

lighthouse..i agree with you in this case. I have seen lot of tiimes in India poter or even servant who help us so much to pick up our heavy baggage should be given lot more than what they are given most of the time.

Pardon me, to wake the soul of this post but had some views to share on this topic.

IMO - Tipping if legally allowed should be given (10% std and more depends), as most of the outlets which allow tips, factor percentage of tip in determining the wages of workers. Workers rly on this income other then that if you are good tipper :) then you would see the difference in atitute of the servers.

When you are asked to tip or when illegal then I detest tipping. Specially when they force you in terms of gratutity and you don't know whether its going to that person or no.. concept of gratituty is insane, not sure if there is any law against it.

Does anyone know how this gratuity earning by joints disclosed to IRS?

tipping is no big deal, its not about it being the "in" its about being nice. thats it, if u dont wanna tip then don't dont do it then complain about it. tips are for delivery people, waiters and cab drivers.

Well said , I would go for tipping for the same reason.

Here I am living in an area with high immigrant population. Most of the workers in such positions are in their struggling period. and specially I see alot many high schools students are also working not only to support themselves but also for their tution fees for colleges. In both cases I believe tip is justified for those underpaid workers who choose to work instead of going on welfare.

If the hairdresser is good and blonde (at supercuts) I tip her well. Cabbies fleece me by adding the tip of 15% to the charge as gratuity without letting me know.... The day I couldnt tip the pizza guy he gave me the nastiest look he could.. but I just told him I had 75c... and man since then I alway keep $ bills stashed in the cupboard to take care of these eventualities.... 😆 If the waitress were particularly good in serving I leave her 15% tip.. but if she was mean to an asian.. I leave 25c... to express my disgust...

Tipping to me in most confusing thing.. especially in the US where you cant tip below a $3-$5 and up..by convention...So when I was travelling to India.. I gave hardworking indian porters generous tip instead of 50, 100, 150,, I went like 200, 300, 500.....if I can pay the porters here who hardly do any physical labor... those in deserve much more...

All said my tipping habits are veri arbitrary....
