hmm ...i like this topic...thanx abhijit for starting it.

my take
lets see where the quota system applies to in the education system.primary problem here is lack of seats.agreed?now, question is,there's a growing demand of trained persona in the upper tiers and the number of seats is simply not sufficient to fulfil this demand.so why doesnt the Govt increase number of seats first?is it lack of infrastructure?lets just say for arguments sake that coming up with new colleges is something extreme and highly expensive,a step the Govt cant dream of taking, they would rather spend the money from our taxes on something more worthwhile, like campaigning for votes and post poll celebrations?since the Govt is so reluctant, why dont they allow private institutes to confer Govt recognised degrees?

actually the Govt has come up with a more ingenious scheme.why not introduce quotas??its a brilliant concept since 1)it adds to the vote banks-the underprivileged feel that the Govt is doing something for them 2)the education system remains under tight Govt control -this is one ministry the Private organizations cant interfere with, which means more taxes and finances added to the Govt fund.3)divide and rule is a good policy.the upper class doesnt contribute much to the vote bank.what the heck?half of them are totally indifferent to the Govt.the Govt doesnt even comprise of any of them.the most they would do is go on organized strikes.half of them go with the brain drain policy anyways and by the time they can actually add to the country's productivity, they have already left.its easy to brainwash the lower class anyways.so reserve more seats for them.

the Govt conducts special inspections of their institutes once a while.it is that time of the year when these institiutes are decked their best, ragged looking store rooms are painted and converted to makeshift seminar rooms, students are trained to praise their teaching system till no end,or the institute loses their affiliation.so these inspections are a sham anyways, even without the inspecting officer being paid a fat fee.

the education system in India, especially Govt institutes consisting of neanderthal age buildings, prehistoric evaluation systems, complete ndifference to upgrading infrastructure makes it redundant.i would go for privatization of higher education, these institutes work much harder to bring up everything up to the scratch.the quotas should be simply done away with, more private institutes should be allowed to open up and affiliated after strict inspection guidelines and an increase in the number of seats will automatically ensure that the population in India are pursuing their career of interest and not just some career simply coz they didnt get through the entrance exams on account of these reservations.and yes,the cutoff for admissions should be merit.

Quotas in India are being very helpful to those oppressed for centuries for various reasons.

If we were to talk only about merit a lot of people wouldnt be anywhere without what their parents did for them and all of that started b'cos they had someone to stand behind them. I have no problem the Govt is standing behind someone who doesnt have a godfather like us.

I think the quotas should continue for atleast another century

initially, yes, but now, since this caste system is virtually nonexistant [except for certain extremely backward areas],it should hardly be the criteria for quotas at a national level,no?

im sure everyone's parents does something or the other for them ,right? economic criteria shouldnt be another criteria for quotas either.the govt should sponsor the education of these classes instead of putting quotas for them.actually, there are sponsorships in various Govt schools and i know plenty of economically backward people from the general category who have availed these sponsorships and made it to the highly competitive institutes purely on the basis of merit.and a lot of incompetent people who have made it to the same system despite lack of basic knowledge, only since they had the quotas.my senior is a prime example of the second category.

What country are you talking about? Everything in India runs by Caste, Religion/Region. Look at the political scenario, everything gets arranged by the caste/religious lines. Look at any matrimonial webiste.

sure, the political scenario is full of incompetent people who have just got in coz of the quotas[i didnt point this out,you did]..im not saying that the higher castes are more competent.but compare the politicians of some developed countries who are chosen after they have proved their worth.Obama is from Columbia University.Even George Bush was a Yale graduate...and laloo yadav is...well,never mind.which further reinforces the belief that people ought to be elected on the basis of merit and education, not quotas and definitely not on the basis of caste.

im not sure why the matrimony sites are being drawn into this, but it will be a really sad day when quotas are implemented into this system too."for every general category person you get married to,you will have to marry a person from the lower caste as well"🤢

The economic criteria stems from the opportunity the forefathers got because of their religion and caste[/quote]
agreed.and that was centuries back.at present times, opportunity=an excuse to slack, sit back and relax.no one really has to study and work hard to get into a renowned college, the quotas will do all the work for them.the Govt is ensuring that these backward classes will remain backward in the social tiers forever, since the fact that they are highly unqualified will remain etched in the general populations' minds forever.call it prejudice, but the Govt is ensuring that these backward classes are looked down upon in the society anyways.

The reason why I gave you the example is this country aligns itself by caste, whether or not there is a caste based quota. The example is a matrimony Site/ another example is the political spectrum. You will see a Jat Lobby. You will see a Maratha Lobby, You will see a Reddy Lobby, You will see a Brahmin Lobby. That completely negates caste's are non-existant in India except in backward areas. Caste's are a major undercurrent in India except some urban neighbourhoods. And less than 10% of Indians live in those neighbourhoods

and the person who walks 5 km to attend school necessarily has to belong to a lower caste?there are people from the lower castes who live in big cities with flourishing businesses and jobs who drive their children to school everyday..some of these children are incompetent even to clear high school and they land up plum jobs and seats in the higher education system, just because their forefathers belonged to some lower class?and how does being a lower class person entitle you to be poor and economically backward?
