IIT-Delhi's expelled Dalit students demand justice

Scores of students from the Indian Institute of Technology- Delhi, Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday held demonstrations, seeking justice for 28 students who were expelled from the IIT.

''All the students were 'bahujan samaj' and faced caste-based discrimination and harassment from the faculty and the administration,'' Ravindra, one of the expelled students, alleged.

He said the faculty singled them out as Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes students and declared them weak students, ''incapable of doing well''.

Twenty-eight students were expelled from the IIT-Delhi earlier this year on the grounds of low academic performance. While 20 of them are from the Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes, the others are from the general category and the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and minority communities.

The protesters, demonstrating outside the IIT campus, Delhi, argued that the evaluation and grading system was arbitrary and lacked transparency. They also said the faculty were influenced by their personal prejudices in their grading.

''The lives of all of us students have been ruined,'' said Ravindra added.

The students said that the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has informed them that it is ''unconstitutional to expel students on the grounds of low academic performance''.

The commission has asked IIT-Delhi Director Surendra Prasad to reconsider the decision and has given the administration 15 days' time from June 17 to reply.

Following the commission's directive, the IIT-Delhi has set up a committee to review the situation.

But the students were not satisfied.

''Dalit students who have deposed before the (review) committee have expressed their complete dissatisfaction as the committee was not willing to listen to the students' version,'' said a protestor.

The protesters demand the 28 students' expulsion be immediately revoked and that the existing review committee be disbanded. They want an independent committee comprising ''socially sensitive members'' to be constituted under the aegis of the government or the human resource development ministry to look into the issue of caste-based discrimination at the IIT-Delhi.

They said that every year there are a few cases of Dalit students being expelled because of ''low academic performance'' but the number was quite high this year.

Anoop, a JNU student and convener of the National Dalit Student Forum, said the institute needs to ''create an atmosphere where the students are not considered weak because of their caste''.

Speechless 😆 😆 😆

Some facts.. Gandhiji and Dr.Ambedkar said after independence when Quota was introduced in India dat this is to benefit people who have not got social status in the country but this things should b abolished after fews from now..

Coming to the topic.. Quota wherever it b.. talking about India,i think quota most of times benefits to the people to whom its has been alloted but in this thing deserving people lose their chance. There r many instances in India wherein person from scheduled caste got admission in medical with 60% cuz of quota and person scoring 90% had to struggle to get admission and then we can't say why good professionals aren't coming out of education institutes

I think quota is a hinderance to developed society in countries like India.

Dividing people on the basis of caste is not proper. If one has to give reservation then one should give reservation on the basis of the financial condition of the person. People who are financially unstable and are financially poor should be given free education and be supported.

i think admission should only be given on the basis to merit and if reservation is to be given then only give it at the school level not after that. basic education should be free. after that i have seen many poor people who have exceeled just by their sheer hard work. so i dont think that reservation is required to move ahead in life.

If with more than 50% unreserved seats we still dont get good professionals then is it logically correct to blame only the reserved candidates for the lack of good professionals? What happens to the meritorious students who form the bulk of students getting admission in the colleges- dont they share any blame for not turning out to b good professionals? Why this bias against a small % of students who get admitted thru quota 😕

The concept of Quota was started off with good intention.......it was to provide education to those classes which were considered backward and poor.......but now we can hardly say that those particular classes are backward or poor.....some of the people belonging to those classes are richer than the people who fall in General category.......because of these quotas people who are more deserving are losing out in getting admissions to good colleges and schools........while undeserving candidates are getting the advantages......there are many poor candidates who belong to general category..........what about them ?? don't they also deserve the same treatment as the so called "poor and backward classes" ??

I personally am against the whole idea of quotas and reservation. It is just a tool for vote bank politics. Instead of quotas, why not offer scholarships and economic help to the deserving, regardless of their caste.

I think the whole reservation system should be abolished and American affirmative system should be adopted as per indian condition.... There will sections in every community which need uplifting irrespective of caste and religion. they should have some privileges. Right now it is a major mess. It is selling the nation for votes.....😊
