I guess almost all of you must have read the novel 'Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens. It is a novel telling about the progress of Oliver, an orphan, who was born in a workhouse. He was starved when he was brought up, scared and was punished when he asked for more. His life was depressing when he was brought up. Later he joined a thief gang where he had to face a lot of travails. But then at one time, it happened he was taken to the hands of a benevolent gentleman and then after he was kidnapped, and after some more ordeals he was taken to a nice family who took care of him. Things ended happily for him.

Why is this novel appealing to people? There are some important reasons. The title itself shows the point. His surname was 'Twist'. That is people twisted his identity. The characters in the novel made many identities for him. Obstinate, rogue, thief and what not. All these identities were false. The true identity of Oliver was he had divine essence within him. He was full of love and affection and was virtuous. And he deserved love also. This was known by people like Mr: Brownlow, Rose and Mrs: Maylie as they too are loving to themselves and they are good in heart.

But then aren't we seeing the same thing in our life also? When we were young and tender, only those fortunate could hear from their parents that they are full of love, affection, talented and gifted and deserve to be valued. Those who are less fortunate were physically and mentally abused and were told things like, 'You are useless. You amount to nothing. You do nothing properly. You are lazy' etc. And then when we try our luck with interviewers , they make their own comments about us. Then our boyfriends or girlfriends could reject us making bad comments about us like, 'You are coward. You are cheat' etc. All these statements people tell us are all lies. The truth about each of us is everyone has divine essence, everyone of us is full of love and everyone of us have special talents. How many people tell these truths to you all? But as adults we can accept these points as truths.

In the novel we saw as the story unfolded, Oliver Twist really has many benevolent relatives and he is not a person who deserved to be discarded. All of us have potential to form families of love if not blood and all of us do belong in this World. As you become more and more loving to yourself, and you start seeing others with love, you will also find you are loved by people.

Aside from the fact that Dickens' writing is very beautiful and poignant and the way he narrates the story, you see it all happening; this is a classic tale of underdog winning. That poor little boy, who had no one, who was no body, then becomes the prince; it strikes a chord with the optimistic, romantic sides of us.
