NEW DELHI: In a diplomatic tit for tat, India and Pakistan on Saturday expelled each other's senior diplomats, adding fresh tensions to the bilateral relations that had dipped last month in the wake of Mumbai train bombings.

India expelled Syed Mohammed Rafiq Ahmed, a counsellor in the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi in retaliation to the arrest 😡and expulsion of Deepak Kaul, visa counsellor in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

Kaul was charged with carrying sensitive documents. Pakistan authorities claimed he was "caught red handed".

New Delhi expressed its indignation and summoned the Pakistan deputy high commissioner to the foreign office.

He was warned that no harm should come to Kaul or any other member of the Indian diplomatic staff posted in Pakistan.

Kaul was arrested around 7.30 a.m. IST when he was on his way from Islamabad to Wagah border to receive his family rejoining him on his posting. He was having tea at a kiosk on the Islamabad-Lahore highway, Indian officials in New Delhi said.

The on-again-off-again India-Pakistan peace process took a nosedive when, in the wake of serial bombings in Mumbai July 11, India accused that terror groups based in Pakistan were involved.

Although a foreign secretary-level round of talks was called off, the two top officials did meet on the sidelines of a SAAARC conference in Dhaka last week.

Although fresh dates were not decided for an official meeting, it was decided the two sides would stay in touch.

The dialogue appeared to have been salvaged from the impasse after the Dhaka meeting. However, Saturday's events have added a new twist to the tense situation.

Deepak Kaul, Visa Counsellor at the Indian High Commission, was arrested around 7:30 am IST while he was on his way to Wagah border by road to receive his family. He was arrested while having tea at a kiosk on the Islamabad-Lahore highway, Indian officials said.

"A group of about eight to nine people pounced on him, hand-cuffed him and took him to an undisclosed location😡," the High Commission officials said.

Kaul was later taken away to an undisclosed location blindfolded and kept there for five hours, they said.

Thx for sharing the video. These girls are just like our Indian girls. So sweet and innocent and inspiring. I wish we all grew up and continued thinking the same way.😛

I think the best way would be to accept status quo (on J&K), i.e., accept LoC as final boundary. I am sure Indian public would support it if it is sure that it would result in end to Terrorism.

Obviously easier said than done!

What I am thinking of was the best case scenario....though it looks almost impossible. Ofcourse we must never compromise on J&K, it will only embolden Terrorists further...they'll feel that we have buckled under their pressure.

There was an intersting Muqabala on NDTV India (Hindi News Channel) today, the penalists were Form.High Commissioner to Pakistan to Mr. G.Parthasarthi, Form. RAW Chief Mr.Duval, Analyst Raja Mohan, Mahesh Bhat😆 and from Pakistan Ayaaz Amin (?), G.P. suggested that we should deal with an iron hand with Pakistani Army and Terrorists while dealing normally with Pakistani Public, Raja Mohan was saying that Military option is no longer a option as Pakistan has nukes now to which Mr.Duval objected saying that we have all the options available to us and we must never ever rule out the ultimate option out bec'se that is what the terrorists and their masters want, and do not live under an illusion that if a Democracy returns to Pakistan then suddenly all problems will be solved. Mahesh Bhat was his usual friendship at any cost raaga...chahe bomb blasts ho ya kuchh ho...according to him all responsiblity is ours for the peace process.
