The relationship we share with China is much more complex than with other neighbors owing to the clout China enjoys in Global scheme of things-economic and strategic.

On the one hand, China is India's biggest trade partner albeit with a heavily skewed balance in China's favor. One the other, both countries are embroiled in a seemingly never-ending border dispute with China paying scant regard to LAC.

How do these two conflicting scenarios sit easy with each other today and in times to come?
What should be the policies of these countries to co-habit peacefully and prosperously as Asia's poster economies?

I believe that till the 1970s,China and India were on similar lines. Thereafter, China started progressing at a much faster rate than India; and it is now quite a distance ahead of us.

Since both are not traditional powerhouses but intend to be in the future, there's is bound to be tension between the two countries. At best, what we can have is uneasy peace.

Looking at things from India's perspective, it really needs to shed its lethargic attitude as regards to policies and reforms which can make a difference. It needs to be visionary. Look at China- it jumped into Africa sensing business opportunities , India just followed. India used to have good relations with most of its neighbors, but even that is not a given now. China is challenging India's clout, be it in Sri Lanka or Maldives.

Please, India, please- rise and earn your self respect. Rest will follow.

Edit- Maldives , not Malaysia. 😳

India is in a unique position geo-strategically to keep China's security(esp energy security) and hence its non-plan expenditure on tenterhooks. But even though our position looks formidable, we have never managed to leverage it for use in coercive diplomacy, remaining confined to being perceived a soft state by nearly all our neighbors. Heck even Sri Lanka and Maldives brush us off too easily now 😆

China very shrewdly through business overtures is winning over all our neighbors to its side. About time we turned around and flexed some muscles of our own to show its not 1962 anymore.

Some would say that throwing in our lot with US' pivot to Asia strategy is the way to stem the rising Chinese tide for India, but in the long run that would be suicidal for Asia as a whole.

All this while not disrupting trade in any way and working on correcting the imbalance would work in favor of both countries since the combined markets of these two is the envy of global economy at this moment. Would be a shame to sacrifice that at the altar of rhetorical brownie pants🥱
