Why do we judge others by their looks/appearance?

Why do people judge others based on their appearance? Weren't we all told that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover when we were young?

And if that's the case then why do so many people judge others by how they look and by their external appearance?

Let's face it. We all have judged other people by their external appearance atleast at some point in our lives. I even confess to rejecting advances from some guys who I thought were not good looking enough for me when I was in my late teens.
Why do we assume that someone may be a crminal just because they "look like a criminal"?
Note: Please do not engage in the men/vs women battle of who judges based on looks more. Thanks.😊

one is free to like or dislike a person based on looks and appearance. its normal. you dont end up liking all you meet. what one should not do is tell that person that ok i dont like the way you look.
yes we should not judge people and label them good or bad based on looks. apperance can tell you something however even there we should exercise caution.
these were two different things. former is ok. later is not ok. hope you are ok with my response

Well, no one is invisible right?😛 So we all do see each other. So I don't really get your point.😕
My question was why do we make an assumption about a person's character when we have only seen their physical appearance?

I am ok with your response.😊
So I guess you mean that it is normal to like a person because they are good looking and dislike someone because they are not. Isn't this a little shallow?😆 I understand liking someone because they are easy on the eyes. But why dislike someone because they are ugly whic is no fault of theirs?😕 Yes, it is absolutely not OK to tell someone that they are ugly.😆
@bold- Ditto! That is definately not the right thing to do, and it is not fair on the person who is being judged.

A bad looking person tends to influence one's intuition when they are assessing them. A good looking person tends to influence one's judgment. The key is to see the difference between forming an opinion of their character and not how they look, which is easier said than done. 😳

People hardly make an assumption on character from attractive/not so attractive looks...they do that based on the way they dress/talk/carry themselves which come from acquired habits.
Yes, people are instantly attracted to good looking people and the regular ones have to work harder to get noticed and appreciated anywhere but that's natural human response to beauty.
On the flip side, beauty is often subjected to jealousy and harsher standards of intellect, scrutinised most minutely needlessly and showered with unwanted attention.
That's the reason very few beautiful people are taken seriously for something other than their looks which is unfair.
I completely agree with the sayings that a book should not be judged by its cover and first impression is not always the last impression.

@bold- True!😆
Forming an opinion of someone's character just based on their looks is so unfair to the person who is being judged. Imagine not saying a word, while a stranger makes an assumption that you're probably a criminal just because you "look like one". Quite unjust.
Why do we always automatically assume that a person is "good" if they are easy on the eyes?

Well, I beg to differ cause I have seen people make judgements on others' characters based on how attractive they are. But yes, nowadays most people DO judge others on the way they dress/act/carry themselves.

True! And it's quite unjust IMO.

I wonder why beauty is subjected to harsher standards of intellect? Is it because people have a pre-conceived notion that "beautiful" people are not intelligent?

My response in red.

You said it yourself.Attractive people are on the radar endlessly for proving to the world more emphatically that they have substance beyond their looks, thereby being labelled bimbos/airheads at the slightest slips.
