Something that I always used to ponder over myself. It's a bit of a struggle when it comes to having experience in the same field - But, I think it's all about gaining whatever skills that you can through different jobs that might not even be related to your degree, volunteering, building relationships and then having those connections within companies that might help in the long run. It'll all pan out at the end.

Sorry for the rambling post on the previous page.. that was a result of mental exhaustion.

Will try to keep it simple this time!

I have talked to people who have been recruiting for years and basically what they say is degrees and experience don't matter much.. those are just filters. A recruiter has to flip through hundreds and thousands of resumes in a limited time.. how much do you think they will read? They will glance through it and all a good education/experience does is ensure your resume doesn't end up in the trash..!

If you attended the interview, then you have an equal chance as all the other interviewees. All that matters is how you impress them at the interview; it's a relative scale. Impression again doesn't mean knowledge and skills, a recruiter will have a set of qualities and you have to meet them! Skill definitely is the most important, but if they don't think you are capable of applying those skills, you won't be hired! I remember asking this one lady who owns a recruitment startup about why they ask those silly questions about strength and weaknesses when you know everyone comes prepared with lies.. and she said, well recruiters see such people everyday, they can pick up on what they want even if you lie!

That said, what are your options? Keep applying to other jobs.. keep an open mind and know its not your fault! There are a lot of variables, that the recruitment process usually seems unfair! Recruiters also confess there are times they make the wrong decision .. and it never works out.. but well they try their best!

Here's something from experience. Ever since I got into this field, I wanted to get into this one company, and I was so excited when I was one of the few who qualified to their interview.. and then I screwed it up .. 'coz I was so excited and nervous and I stammered.. though I have never stammered in my life before or after that! Anyways.. later I found out that one of my interviewers was totally biased.. it was very clear they knew who they wanted to hire.. 'coz he asked those people the same set of very simple personal questions .. and the rest of us got really really difficult technical questions! I was so disappointed, and yet happy when my best friend got in. I got into a pretty good company myself, but I always thought I was unlucky that I didn't get into my dream company. But it turned out later, that my friend's job sucked big time. He hated it, while I loved my job! So actually all I can say is if you don't get into a company, maybe its for your own good .. 😃

What I am trying to say is if they told it you didn't get it because of lack of experience, there is a good chance they are lying .. else they should have mentioned it in the list of requirements for the job!

I agree with Aarya, just because someone has experience doesn't mean they know something more than a person with no experience! You might actually pick up stuff faster than they might.. and the company might benefit hiring you more than the person who has experience in one field, which might be totally useless after a while.

@ Vintage wine 😆. That is CLASSIC. Out of interest, how many times have you replicated that letter to the employers who rejected you? I am sure they must have kicked themselves really hard after reading your gem of a letter, and realising the biggest mistake of their lives by not employing you! such a bright cookie you are😛

@ Aarya + Quirky - I know of many graduates, that are doing jobs in completely different fields from their study. I guess, once you get your first break then opportunities to progress is clearer. I am still waiting for my first proper break. I have had many jobs as a student, but none of them were graduate level jobs. I suppose what looks good in my resume, is experience in blooming every field ie catering, retail, customer service, labs, contact centers, bank, sales and hospital 😆.. Some look at my resume and presume i am a job hopper, whilst others may look at it me being able to adapt myself in various environment. Either way, i am still struggling to get my first break in a graduate paid job right now *Sighs*.

@Bored-damsel. Thank you for the detailed response. Yes, i know how these recruiting agencies work. It is personality that sells for many jobs, mostly extroverts have the advantage over introverts. Debate?

I am glad, you got the job you love now. Job satisfaction is important, if you love your job you will be thrived to do better and improve yourself and climb the ladder of success on your own merits! I am still waiting for the job, that can become my drug. I am quite a workaholic person, thus been unemployed for the past few weeks, is making me weak. 😆

Personally, I think it's passion to work and not personality. Not sure how they judge it ..

I quit my job four years ago .. have been studying since then.. but in a way glad I did.. I don't think I was this happy when I was working.. Not sure how I will survive in the industry again. I can tell you one thing, I tried applying for internships my first year and didn't get any, 'coz I had lost touch of the whole interviewing game! From what I heard, every small job counts.. even if its a small internship. That's what one of the recruiters said. I have to try and apply at least next year. .. it's just so much of work, preparing for interviews I mean!

I am still waiting for the job, that can become my drug. I am quite a workaholic person, thus been unemployed for the past few weeks, is making me weak. 😆

I totally understand. 😊

You've got a heck of a lot of experience there.. Now you have me worried about my position after I obtain my degree. 😆 Some one once told me it's all about the way you promote your self - Do a bit of background search for the company you're aiming at, change the CV around with words they'd want to read, say things that they'd wanna hear and present your self in a manner that'd assure em that the skills you're offering them with is what they need & you'll be sweet! Even if you get into the company via a different field, you can work your way through - Usually a lot of Jobs get passed around internally before being offered to the outsiders.

My 10 cents:

1. These frustrations are part of life. 2-3 years from now, you would be advising other freshers.

2. Put yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager and think. Who would you hire? Someone with experience who can hit the ground running or a greenhorn who might need a lot of hand holding and mentoring to get the job done? With that understanding, you would learn to appreciate their point of view as well.

3. Ask yourself if you are being too ambitious in your job search and gunning only for the really big uns (Multinational companies, global conglomerates, Big 4 and such) or considering other smaller players too.

4. Ask yourself if your compensation expectations are too high.

5. Can you intern anywhere? Even for free?

6. Any college projects that you can highlight as practical experience?

7. Send out hundreds of resumes. Volume matters.

8. It's not just a problem for the freshers. Even experienced people sometimes find it daunting to switch jobs because their experience doesn't match with what the prospective employer is looking for. I am a software professional and if I have experience in, say, Microsoft's .NET, I will still find it a difficult undertaking to land a job that is demanding Java experience. And if Microsoft's .NET jobs dry up, and all open positions are for Java, and my company downsizes, a fresher and me will find ourselves in the same boat. Point is, even once we get a job, we have to continue learning, training and enhancing our skill-sets, otherwise we are out of the rat race.

9. Sometimes, you have to swallow pride. Checking on the prospective employer more than once, and touch basing, even if they rejected you with extreme prejudice, is still OK

10. One too many failures might hurt the confidence but then that hurt might only come in the way of performing well in the next interview. We have to learn to erase bad memories, that way. For our own good.

Well to be honest ..I have decided to teach those snotty employers a lesson ...Hahaha ..I have stopped applying for jobs ...and I won't until everyone in this world has a job ..Thus making me the only applicant ( I mean a jobless one ) left for em to employ ...😛 .

It ll be so much fun to watch em try to make it up to me ..As they plead with me to accept the job offer ...Hahaha ...😆 ..Trust ME ..I'm waiting for that day and practicing the smirk ...😆
