I was born and brought up in NJ for first 8 years, and then my family moved to India. So, when I came, I had NO idea of Hindi, Bengali (a popular language where I live) and I'd always speak with my parents etc in a VERY strong American accent. Even Hindi words like "maasi" came out as "masseee" 😆

But after living in India (which I am still doing) I've almost completely lost spontaneity when I use my Indian accent over my American accent. For example, I still tend to use mix of Indian with American accent in school etc but when I talk to my mom etc I have this strong desi accent (the 'pass me the rubber' types...😆)... and plus I have this strange ability to control the accent i.e. if I want I can speak in a strong American accent and still speak with a strong Indian accent...

Get on the NJ turnpike and you're literally exclaiming at odd white person or two you might see. 😆😆😆

I don't know if you remember Edison or not, or if Edison was what it is today when you were younger... but you might as well be walking in mumbai, minus the gol gappe waala, or the daab waala. Paan stains on the streets, garbage here and there (albeit, less so than one typically finds in Indian market places), the dukaan waalas yelling out to each other through the door once in a while ... it's known as Little India 😆

Heck, we even have what is essentially an upscale dhaaba with it's own ganne ka juice waala machine... I mean the things you see on the streets in India. With real ganna and everything 😆 Gotta love it! 😃

^^ Egjacktly saahib 😉 😆

Makes me wonder... is accent an inherent trait in part? A part of us that comes out automatically in times of extreme emotions, stresss or when we're with a certain person or group of people?

I've noticed a couple of my friends develop a sort of Indian accent when talking to their grandparents. Is that a matter of inheritence or adaption (in reverse?)

and then there's intra-indian accent: the accent one adopts with the local paan-bidi wala, and the more modulated one that's used when one is saying sweet nothings over the phone😉😆
