it depends how we use this word

1) If by destiny you mean where we would end up (destination) then the answer is that it is both due to chance and choice. We can shape our future however there are somethings beyond our control.

2) If by destiny you mean predetermined events (fate) then I dont believe in this. Yes some events like aging, death are predetermined however thats about it. I think people use this to keep thsemsleves satisfied/content. In that context its not a bad thing lol. dil behlaane ke liyan khiyal achaa hai.

@ summer, destiny means taqdeer while luck is kismat.

okay here is a song. two grans are arguing over taqdeer versus tadbeer (destiny versus planning). its a photo finish.

i think destiny itself means as something on which you have no control...like you dont choose who you meet in life...it happens because it is meant to be...

The words "meant-to-be" comes into play when you believe in some external sources are at work...

And truly you can not choose who you meet in life, but you can surely choose if you want to be with that person all your life... It all drills down to choices you are given and the choices you make!

And truly you can not choose who you meet in life, but you can surely choose if you want to be with that person all your life... It all drills down to choices you are given and the choices you make! so here the destiny is you meeting that person...whether you be with that person, become friends or not...that is not destiny...that is your choice...but suppose you dont become friends and you just meet for once and part ways...then whether you meet that person again in your life would be destiny... thats is if its not through you...if you happen to meet him/her by chance...

I believe in destiny.

Now there are things which we can control and some things which we cannot. so...control whatever you can, however ACCEPT whatever you get. I dont believe in playing a victim or feeling hopeless when something bad happens in his life. One has to either change himself from the within or change the circumstances and do what he wants to. But sadly, there are certain things which are beyond one's control - such things should be accepted with grace.

If life doesnt have a happy ending, it means it hasnt ended yet :P ...so, i believe everyone's destined to be happy/satisfied in the end.. (through re-births etc)

Choosing and meeting people are very much under "controllable" category.. unless you fall in love and cannot control yourself from being with that man i guess, but one can always distance oneself from his object of love? but who your born to is again your destiny? lol..
