You will be allowed to add your own creative touch, but to make it challenging you will have certain aspects you must include in your story.

Winners will be decided 50% by voting and 50% by judges. It will be based on likes as well as judges score. We can definitely do the anonymous posting.

Feel free to send send the info to anyone. Anyone is welcome to join even if they are not DM regulars.

Sound.

The topic will be a surprise. If you find that it is too heavy you can skip it. This is DM and some people do like serious intense debate. That is why there will be a more creative writing part separate from debate for people who are more comfortable creatively.

I trust the judges to make the debate topics refreshing and different from the debates we have been having since the generation of DM 😉

Will be given at time of debate.

We should get some time to get prepared... So what has been decided? Team debate, or individual debate? 😉

Either way, I'm scared. 😲

Individual. Each to his/her own.

Time starts after the topic has been posted. If viewpoints of two participants match, then weight-age would be given to the participant who made the point first.

The contest itself hasn't been posted yet. Please keep checking. It should be soon.

And of course, participation is most welcome.

OK, slap me silly and call me George but, once Sarina signaled the race with a "On your marks, get set, go!", and capped it off with a gunshot into the air, why are there all those posts that are not real entries in the actual debate contest?!

Some of you guys are like those kids who whisper, cough, clear throats loudly and in general distract those who are seriously reading in a library.

All conversations regarding the actual debate could have been carried out over here. Only the real entries were supposed to appear in that thread.

Sarina, is that whip only for show or are you gonna crack it to show who's the boss?!

(G, why am I not judging? I will tell you why. I don't have much confidence in the overall discipline of the populace)

Oh, c'mon now Mister K, have a little more faith in us. Plus, you haven't been around as long and you haven't seen some of our best debates in DM. ;)

Although, Sarina, I'd just like to add that I think debates are more fun when debate topics are more exciting, controversial, and force people to take sides. In this topic, I feel like its a persuasive essay. Your last debate contest (with me and Cloddy) was fun because there were moral and ethical values attached --- I enjoyed that. In this topic, I feel like there isn't as much of a debate as a difference in personal choice.

I shall see if I can come up with anything to participate, I'm not sure how to approach the question just yet.

^^Ajnu, the ones that incite passions and draw out emotions could prove to be more appealing to the participants but are also harder to judge. On these boards I have noticed that, more often than not, the replies are replete with homilies and platitudes. Most people seem to have a collection of these which they relish unleashing at will. These idioms and proverbs and homilies and what-have-you might score heavily with the audience but when it comes to judging them one has to strip them out and look at the actual content. I am afraid that might not sit well with the participants.

The one Sarina posted is issue-based. There is a tremendous scope for debate. The struggles, adversities, prejudice faced by African Americans in the US and Dalits in India is legendary. The conditions started to improve towards the final few decades of the 20th century. If birth was inevitable and these were the only two choices one had, which section amongst these two oppressed classes, according to the participant, stood a better chance to turn it around quicker, faster and better? How would the participant play the odds? What went right, knowing what we know now? What could have gone wrong? Those were some points to ponder.

That s quitting even before the contest has begun ! Surely the judges have some power to discipline the contestants where and when deemed necessary . I m surprised that Sarina has accepted ur resignation so easily .Responsibility once accepted should not be forsaken so early ! many of us were looking forward to ur judging the contest , Mister K. I hope you reconsider your decision to quit !
